No, the X-Band was successful for Sega and Nintendo. Perhaps you are too young to even remember or know about it.
Even with the problem of droppers, the service was initially a smash success in its five-city test run (San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles). Catapult intended to capitalize on this momentum and announced on August 10, 1995 that it was teaming up with Blockbuster Video to expand their Xband sell-through program. It was one of the most successful national rollouts in Blockbuster history, increasing the number of retailers selling Xbands to 4500. Blockbuster employees were trained in the use of the service and its features, while four feet of display space with headers and four shelves of space were allotted for the product. Not to shabby for a concept most people considered to be unfeasible on consoles. Additionally, Catapult created a two-minute video about the service that could be rented from Blockbuster for free. By 1995, Xband also supported the SNES, offering gamers on both consoles such hits as Killer Instinct, Madden '95, Weapon Lord, NBA Jam, Super Mario Kart, and Super Street Fighter II. At its height, the service boasted that gamers spent 20 hours a month online, playing about a million games and sending or receiving around 80 messages.
Sega AND Nintendo realized it about 10 years ago when they had the X-band modem and service.  Please don't try and make it like MS invented the online game/matchmaking console services and made it successful, it hurts.

but in current world of the internet they didn't realize what a pivotol role it would play.

basically they offered cable services now- these are internet based services service.

there is a difference.

(basically sega's provided access to a library of games /w some multiplayer options- it was pretty cool, but didn't catch on. it would take pc games like counterstrike to popularize online multiplayer giving consoles a market to build on.)

if what you were looking for was the first of internet play it goes back to atari and other systems that launched research in network play way before nintendo and sega were even players.

(o- and your xlink wasn't supported by nintendo or sega- it was a 3rd party developed project. like the sharkwire system developed for the n64. it also was a flop.)

Im 23, maybe a bit young for the Gameboy when it first released but ive had every major console on the launch date. Besides im from the UK, im not a yank.

Dude, your living in the past. This thread is about the revolution, not the cube. Get over it.

I am not the one with console game companies logos all over my sig and avatar. You monkey feces.

585935274

Again with the insults because of what i have in my sig, just because i want to show support for xbox 360 doesnt mean my points are any less valid.

Yes, I think everybody realizes that Nintendo made a huge mistake and now is making up for it. But the original post was incorrect by Oneil, it is not true Nintendo is copying off Microsoft with the Revolution because Microsoft was never the first one to make an online service for a console or make it successful. Catapult did that with the X-band for the Sega Genesis and SNES.

Jesus Christ thats what im on about, the current generation (namely xbox) made it successful and Nintendo conveniently decide to buy into online gaming with the Revolution, you are all bloody blinded by Nintendo and you call me because i support Microsoft.

I might be buying one of the, just depends on which has the games that will appeal to me more. I don't game no where near as much as i used to. Especially on a console, unless it is a football game at a friend's house. And since i don't know anyone here in Seattle, it's gonna be even more of a hard choice for me if i decide to invest in anyof these nextgen consoles.

No need too up this anymore. Nintendo have admitted they did wrong when not comitting themself to online on the GameCube. That's what they are trying to take a jump at with Revolution. Seems like you just want to rub it in on who have had the most sucsess with online gaming.

yes, but nintendo did see that interactive internet play was a strength for the xbx- if it was a flop nintendo would likely continue their gc stance on internet play.

earlier they did (before xbx live #s came in) say that internet was not a consideration for their next project.

the xbx live undoubltably influenced their change in policy- sony even influenced them with the mild success of their free internet play.

one thing i look forward to is playing some games over the internet /w ppl of different consoles.

whether or not the internet option was ripped from ms- we'll see more players on mmorpgs with all consoles being internet enabled.

MS said it themselves, "5 years ago we were here at E3 and had 0 systems sold."

I could easily claim tat MS was stubborn for the 15 years prior to this in not getting into gaming, but I am not because that is flawed logic. MS wised up to gaming just as other companies wise up to new innovations. It is the way the world works.

Nintendo was pumping out NESs when MS was still an infant of the company it is today. You should be bowing to Nintendo sonny.

and Microsoft just came up with console gaming off of the top of their heads??

because....you know....they would never need to copy anybody....

Of course Xbox Live influcenced Nintendo's decision to go online with the Revolution, I'm not denying that. This whole aregument started when someone made the claim that Nintendo was copying Microsoft with the Revolution and making an online service, which they aren't becuase Microsoft got the ideal from consoles of the past who have tried it.
MS said it themselves, "5 years ago we were here at E3 and had 0 systems sold."

there's no obligation to bow to anyone.

i'm suprised nintendo let their gaurd down twice with both sony and ms-

in fact nintendo deserves no such respect you beckon, they imo have failed the consumer on numerous occassions continuing their isolationist attitude over seeking innovation and ultimately, customer satisfaction.

they showed an imperialistic attitude, seeing new technologies as unworthy their godly touch. they also closed up- unwilling to cooperate with outside developers in both software and hardware technology. there's many books on this- check out nintendo's corporate history, it's interesting.

and noone should be bowing to any damn company- isn't it the idea that it's in fact the customer who's being catered to by the company?

crazee :p

nintendo waited on their online services until they knew they could do it right. wireless makes that possible.  nintendo is going online now, because they know they can do it right, now.

585935377

interesting.

i definitely found it annoying that there weren't any readily available wireless options for the ps2.

just finished watching the nintendo press confrence,. how good do i think it was? well to give you an idea, it was the only press confrence out of the 3 that i actually watched ALL THE WAY THROUGH :)

One thing i love about getting feeds like this from previous E3 shows is the cheering of the people there when they get excited. I gotta tell you both the Microsoft and Sony confrences felt more like well coriographed texture and lighting presentations! :p while the nintendo confrence felt like a rock band signing with a bunch of rabid fans! They screamed and yelled at the mention of a new mario or zelda, the yelled when miyamoto came out, they cheered when the new GBA and Revolution was shown... God i loved it. This was a bright energetic confrence and I have to say it was a breath of fresh air compared to Sony and Microsoft.

That having been said, I gotta say that the actual content was very light. Very little said about the new GBA or Revolution, but Im letting both these go because A) what more do you need to know about the new GBA other than its a smaller GBA and B) Revolution is soo far from being released -if nintendo has cooked up something big, I dont blame them for protecting their ideas.

On a side note, I fully believe that the Revolution is only a revolution in nintendo's eyes, has anyone noticed that all the other consoles they have released have only really upped the power of the console, while have very small conservative changes. the revolution will be going in a whole new direction, a more main stream direction- and so it wont seem like a huge deal to us, its a huge deal to nintendo and their business thought process.

Nintendo is truly milking Mario for all hes worth- i thought last year was bad, this is gunna be even better or even worse depedning on where you stand. In the confrence they announced a Mario themed GOLF, BASEBALL, SOCCER, PARTY (7), and DANCING game! thats just crazyyy! But you know what , my own judgments aside, Im glad MArio is still around after all these years and strictly as a gamer I have to say... BRING IT ON! :)

Zelda looks AWESOME! -but and please no flames, its hard to be excited about this game after seeing the CG like zelda clip shown at the last E3 and then to be confronted by wind waker. On top of that , with it so late in GC's life span the graphics look dated, I was almost half hoping they could save it for the revolution as a launch title. oh well...

All in all an excellent press confrence. Lots of hype and excitment being built for nintendo. their show reel was nice although i was dissapointed that it was majorly fluffed up by games coming out on all system (madden 06!?)

Oh i cant resist. a few years back before the Xbox was even a glint in Bill Gates' eye, someone approached the billionaire and asked him what he thought about console gaming. He said "The future is not in console gaming or even in the living room, I predict consoles will die out and be buried by the PC in no less than 5 years"

talk about complete 180 ;) errr should i say 360 ? :p

isn't that the zelda that was coming to the gc tho- maybe i'm just confused, but are they saying that it's coming to the revolution and not the gc

(that would **** me off... because, honestly, i wasn't planning on getting a Revolution. i've got to cut down on the amount of consoles i have and the costs they incur.)

the new Zelda game is a GC game....

Too kind of add a late comment into the whole online thing. Xbox didn't popularize it. PC popularized it. Common "joe blow" only plays consoles though. So MS took the PC model, and made it popular on consoles. Microsoft was a company developed on business practices and marketing. It started off without a product, they simply bought the rights to it, called it their own, and then sold it better than anyone else. What do you think they do 20 years later after they started?

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
