[Definitive] Nintendo Wii Thread

just thinking about the nintendoon.co.uk site, wouldn't they have to get permission from Nintendo to use the background found at http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/stars/index.jsp , or could they use it freely so long as they don't profit from it ?

No, Nintendo made more profit then MS's and Sony's gaming divisions with only 10% of the market share.  Most of this is due to the fact that they are the second largest game publisher in the world.

ummmmmm.... we're both correct. It's not a case of your right and I'm wrong... I was comparing profits for the company as a whole, not just the gaming divisions. Nintendo profits approximately 3X as much as sony as whole companies. Now infact, Sony's gaming division might be making almost as much revenue as Nintendo as a whole, but if that's the case, they're taking major losses else where.

Yes I was referring to their gaming divisions, but I think Nintendo made $300 million in their last fiscal year. MS as a whole makes in the billions so Nintendo wouldn't really have made 50% of MS's total profit. And that is why they can't design\sell their console or handheld at a loss because they have no other divisons to fall back to. It is going to be interesting to see what Iwata comes up with now that he is in charge. Edited by jmole

Nintendo had a profit of $814 million in their 2005 fiscal year. =O (from www.pcvsconsole.com's forums where they keep track of this stuff...)

This was the article on Neowin and who got it from Gamespot so it depends on who you trust more: Link.

Well, Nintendo's report for March 2004 - March 2005 has their net income listed as 87,416 million yen. Which according to google is about 780 million dollars US.

Or does that mean the 2004 fiscal year? I dont know anything about this stuff... x_x

looks like talk of there being a visor with the Revolution is starting up again, as some people claim to have evidence of some kind of meeting between Nintendo and Emagin (who make stereoscopic 3d head displays).

Now these guys claim that evidence supports this claim of a meeting, but i dunno what to believe this all started on the notable seriousgamer007 blog, where some fanciful claims have been made already, check it out for yourselves at http://www.armleg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?...mozlapunkmessag

Fake. It will be a touchscreen controller. Get over it

Ummmmm.... Your more wrong than he is. Atleast Nintendo publically denied a touch screen controller for the rev, so far they haven't denied VR. :p

That aside, some convincing evidence is proposed. Essentially the idea is an appropriate headset designed by eMagin is $899, which of course, wouldn't be massed produced anywhere near to the extent of a video game console made by Nintendo.

BTW, these headsets by emagin are in 800X600 svga standard resolution.

I mean, alot is speculated from what evidence they have... supposedly their was some recorded phone conversations or something, but I never found em. Who knows, probably a fake by a fanboy who did some research? In any case, some evidence is there, but like all other "evidence" take it with a grain of salt.

http://rapidshare.de/files/3248858/bruce1.wav.html

that is the supposed phone call... real or fake i can't say..

also from what i have read , it seems that Emagin would be capable of significantly lowering the cost of its visor, if it had major contract to mass produce it

ps check out http://www.armleg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?...81ffce5fc3f877b

where it is being discussed with good intent..

oh, and seriousgamer007 is supposedly being threatened with legal action (by Emagin..) to remove his site...... so it is all a little strange, considering, i think it was he who made the connection between Emagin and Nintendo...

believe what you will...

Miyamoto and Iwata Talk Revolution

On the same note, Iwata said Nintendo had no desire to make people pay extra out of the box for the Revolution's DVD functionality, since most people already own one or more DVD players. He also reiterated that the DVD player will be built-in and not an external attachment. At E3 2005, the company confirmed that an additionally purchased dongle would activate the built-in DVD functionality.

Now that confuses me, is it or is it not built in, can someone please explain?
As far as the Revolution's Internet connectivity is concerned, the system will be Wi-Fi compatible out of the box but won't come with an Ethernet port. Instead, Nintendo will sell an Ethernet adaptor for the Revolution's USB port. Iwata said it would be difficult, given where the Revolution will be in a household [probably the living room] for players to connect the Revolution to a traditional Ethernet line.

I have to admit, THAT is a bad choice, and kind of discourages me a little. However, if the ethernet adapter is cheap and available at launch, then it's not that bad.

EDIT: And how much does it cost to have the eth port built-in anyway? I know they want the console to be cheap, but damn, they are kind of pushing it a little.

Grr. Read the whole thing. Revolution will be Wi-Fi compatible out of the box, meaning it will connect to a wireless router without another peripheral. It's a pretty smart move to include this and not an ethernet port since (a) it can help reduce the size of the system and (b) given that the system will be mainly used in living rooms, a lot of people would not have network cables there.

They mentioned before they are going to either include or sell a USB dongle that plugs into the back of your computer. It will transmit your internet connection wirelessly to the Revolution if your routher\switch\broadband modem does not have wireless functionality.

1. As somone said it cuts down on the size and power consumption. (They keep mentioning the system is low power so something is up with that. People are speculating the console will be portable without having to plug it into a wall). I think it has to do more with power consumption then size, because the PS2 slim has an ethernet port in the back so size really isn't an issue.

2. People who have wireless in their house will not have to pay for whatever the cost of the putting an ethernet port in the console.

3. Every decision they make of what to leave out that is unecessary cuts the overall cost of the console. Sure the ethernet port may be like $5-10, but every little decision adds up in the end.

Well, I, for one, and I'm sure a lot of people from my country, would much rather prefer having the ethernet port out of the box, since it''s so much easier to just get a longer UTP cable than any other peripheral/wireless router.

And I seriously hope that whatever adapter they release does NOT require the computer to be on. Anyway, this is just a minor set back for me, I still can't wait for the damn thing to come to us !

I am the complete opposite of you then. I don't have my consoles anywhere near my DSL modem\router. They are downstairs and my DSL modem\router is upstairs. That would require alot of cable and require putting it through walls to get it downstairs. And I am not so good at drilling holes in my walls.

I don't mean offense or anything, but if you have a broadband internet connection, there is no reason why you shouldn't have a wireless router. They are pretty much dirt cheap right now: Pricewatch as in $25 USD, half the price of a new game.

Yes, but if they are going for having a cheaper console, and more accesible, connecting to the internet shouldn't require any aditional purchase, so people who prefer and already have the cable, don't have to go through the hassle.

And while what you said is true about routers, I have to say that applies mainly for people in the US, not the whole world. I'm going to go on a limb here, but I would say the proportion of people with wireless routers seems to me the same proportion of people with HD TV's, at least here, where the broadband carriers don't normaly supply WI-FI routers. Other than the Rev connectivity, I have no use of WI-FI in my home, at least for the time being.

And don't worry, it's no offense ;)

  No, no, no, no. Lot's of people have wireless routers, mainly because they're so easy to obtain, if you have broadband in america, you more than likely have the wireless router, because of so many people have laptops/notebooks, they want the full experience. Not to mention, you only pay for it's equiptment, which is cheaper than HDTV equiptment, plus, HDTV programming costs more. :) No offense...

You said it yourself, in America (US); Nintendo is selling to the whole world.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
