Switched to BitDefender... Very good protection, BitDefender is second best after Kaspersky. NOD32 is nice but not so good as everyone lets you think it is...

Personally I would rate the engines like this:

1) Kaspersky

2) BitDefender

3) McAfee

4) NOD32

... ... ...

Ofcource the NOD32 fanboys will say NOD is the best, it't good but defenitly not the best! But people should just use what they like, it's personal preference... I won't recommend Symantec tho (also not corporate) because it has slow updates to big threats (like MyTOB now)...

You have and opinion, it is however not based on facts.

Check this list out and then compare to the products on your list.

NOD32 - Result summary: 31 passes / 3 fails

McAfee - Result summary: 19 passes / 18 fails

BitDefender - Result summary: 7 passes / 6 fails

Kaspersky - Result summary: 26 passes / 13 fails

Actually, if he was rating on overall protection, NOD32 wouldn't be first at all. NOD32 is a little weak with scripts, and good, not great trojan protection.

They are extremely good with ITW malware however as shown by the VB100% (what most normal users get). And the heuristics are something to be wrecken with (but will decrease as it gets more popular due to pre-checking).

I wouldn't say KAV, BitDefender, and McAfee have better engines. It would really more be like they have a better signature databases, which usually puts them above NOD32 on large malware tests with exotic code.

Well it's based on facts, vb100 does not cover a full product test. It only included viruses, but the biggest risk now a days are Trojans, backdoors ect ect.

If you don't believe my ratings I would like to invite you at the wildersecurity forums to find it out yourself, and have a look here http://www.av-comparatives.org/

(note that BitDefender almost doubled their signature database since the last test, and now seems the best after Kaspersky in on-demand scan results)

I'm glad to see BitDefender mentioned at last, it's unknown to many - but I've tried just about all AV products, and BitDefender is the most impressive for low oveheads and ease of use.

The fact that BitDefender comes as a complete package (Anti Spam, Firewall and AV) appeals to me too.

McAfee

I only used Norton and that one was too slowwwwwwwwwwww

I tried Grisoft and another free AV--I couldn't download them successfully

When I saw on Hotmail that Microsoft used McAfee to detect virus, I thought McAfee was something only Microsoft used.

Now I am using McAfee, it turns down its auto-protect function automatically from time to time...But it does work for me.

Chances are ANY AV software will work for me. I might be like Microsoft: I don't care about security or virus or adwares. As long as my PC is still usable and my docs are not deleted I won't consider that problem.

PS: Earlier this year the most pretty girl in my class asked me to mix some tracks for her and... I didn't have AV that time and her flash disk was infected with obvious virus. That's when I got a McAfee. I also gave her the McAfee 8.0 to kill her virus but..she hasn't been able to know how to use it. Does pretty girls have to be a bit dumber!?

    • Surprise! We still can't get it right. With the current state of AI, the crappy software, the huge mega-corporations that back all of these idiot things, I think we are a very long way away from SAE Level 5. I, for one, will never get in one.
    • Nice. September/October GA?! I'll keep following it, but won't install any preview or beta versions.
    • Wow, that could have been dangerous, certainly not ready for these things. They have to be 100% or pretty well close to it. Not that I will see one i doubt, never mind ride in one, they may have them in London, but I doubt they will come to where I live.
    • Nothing kills CMF Phone 2 Pro's successor due to rising memory prices by Hamid Ganji Storage and RAM prices have been rising over the past year, leading to a significant increase in the cost of electronics for customers around the world. Many companies are now revising their plans for upcoming devices due to higher component costs and overall production expenses. CMF is the latest company to cancel the successor to one of its best-selling phones due to rising memory prices. CMF is a sub-brand of Nothing and focuses on making budget smartphones for growing markets. The brand launched the CMF Phone 2 Pro last year with some eye-catching specifications and an affordable price. While many customers may have been waiting for a successor this year, one of the company’s executives has announced that CMF will not release a new smartphone this year. And AI is to blame. As Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis announced on X, the company has been working on a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro, but with current memory prices, it cannot “build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.” So, no new CMF phone will be launched this year. Meanwhile, Evangelidis said the company still has several new products in the pipeline, including some in entirely new categories. He added that the Nothing brand will also continue launching new products through 2026. Budget smartphones are among the first victims of the surge in RAM and memory prices, as they have become more expensive to build. The sharp increase in memory costs could also reshape the traditional price ranges associated with budget phones. Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently said that price increases for some of the company’s products are unavoidable because RAM and memory have become significantly more expensive this year. Analysts estimate that the base price of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could rise to $1,399 due to current market shortages.
    • Nudge me when they bring back hardware audio acceleration so I can get my EAX 5 back. We've evolved graphics to real-time path tracing, but regressed audio some 15 years back in time with this stupid software audio stack.
