M118LR
Mike, Would that be icon 4 or 5 or some other one? Then I just rename it to icon 20 or do I have to do more ? M118LR
Mike This is the line to be modified. But what should it look like. This sounds like something that needs to be done in XP to change all of the Program files that don't get changed. I think icon 20 is for Program Files ? -addoverwrite icons\shell32\Icon_20.ico, ICONGROUP,20,1033 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/352940-vista-beta-1-icons-xp-working/page/6/#findComment-586349607 Share on other sites
Mike_Wilson
Do not alter the script files, if you want to update the patcher to patch these files place the files attached into the icon\shell32 folder replacing the icons Icon_20.ico and Icon_37.ico then run the patcher and patch your shell32.dll and your program icons should look like below. Icon_20.ico Icon_37.ico Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/352940-vista-beta-1-icons-xp-working/page/6/#findComment-586349887 Share on other sites

EZRecovery
where in reshack do i change the icons, i tried once and nothing changed 586348490 Use this tutorial posted by Mike_Wilson. I read it step by step and it does work. heres a basic tutorial I found on resource hacking a system file.http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1095 586314060 I happened to move the shell32.dll from %windows%\system32 to the input folder, and mistakenly I hit the Windows key on the keyboard opening the start menu, and my pc froze up. I rebooted and of course, it couldnt find the shell32.dll because I had moved it before. If you try to do Safe Mode when something like that happens to you, Safe Mode will not work for you, because shell32.dll is not there. What do I do now? I use BartPE a lot and it comes with a plugin named A43 File Management and IMO, it is a great utility. I did all my changes without using Safe Mode. I created the BartPE ISO, then boot from it and used A43. It is like using Windows Explorer, but you are outside the windows platform. /EZ Edited August 9, 2005 by EZRecovery Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/352940-vista-beta-1-icons-xp-working/page/6/#findComment-586351841 Share on other sites

EZRecovery
Thats why you copy it and dont move it 586351895 :D True, but everybody makes mistakes. It doesn't hurt me. I know how to manage Windows when it crashes, well at least I'm getting better. :p I just wanted to present my problem in case someone else runs into the same problem. ninjamunky
I can't replace shell32.dll and shimgvw.dll for some reason. I think it might be because I use StyleXP, but I'm not sure what steps to take to be able to replace them... ninjamunky
Was doing it in SafeMode... :/ I haven't got time right now, but I'll try again when I get back and tell you how it works out. Some of them have worked and they look great, hope I can get the rest to work :) Cheers Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/352940-vista-beta-1-icons-xp-working/page/6/#findComment-586365521 Share on other sites
ninjamunky
Hmm... I would've editted, but there wasn't a choice to... However, it still didn't work :( I still couldn't replace the two files with the modified versions via safemode. Rename the extension to .bak on the original files and then reboot. Don't forget to save your original files in a safe place. ninjamunky
OK. I think I got everything going good. Only thing is, I don't have iexplorer.exe in my windows/system32 like the readme says it should be... Don't know, but otherwise I modified every other file and I copied the originals into the input folder, so those should also be able to serve as backups, right? You might have to rebuild your icon cache to get all the new icons showing. I know I have too. JustGeorge
Is it possible to undo this at anytime and get normal XP icons? 586366953 Yes, just remove the altered files and replace them with your original XP files, hence the reason for backing them up.
