I had the same problem on a laptop I tweak at work. I ended up using Resource Hacker and doing them myself.

Or you can use tweakUI to remove the shortcut arrow alltogether. Not a real fix but makes the issue less of a problem. I think the shell32.dll needs to be altered to fix this issue.

The reason for the shortcut overlay to look like the following:

post-17178-1123269012.jpg

is because the icon itself is full size, the normal xp shortcut overlay is smaller and hense does not fill the whole icon itself.

I remove the arrows from shortcuts but for people who dont, you can use this modified icon I made which should fix the problem. Ive attached it below, you can either res hack it into your shell32.dll at Icon Group 30 or you can place the icon in the icons\shell32 folder for the patcher overwriting the old icon then just re-patch your shell32.dll as before.

Icon_30.ico

YOU MUST BE CAREFUL DOING THIS, I FIND THIS THE EASIEST WAY BUT BE CAREFUL

Windows stores backups of the files so if they are replaced they get overwriten by the originals. So first you need to stop this from happeneing.

You rename the files in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder in which you want to add new ones, so if you want to put in a patched shell32.dll for example you rename the shell32.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache to shell32.dll.bak so its there as a backup but is not going to overwrite. Do this with all files you want to replace.

So if you want to install the patched files like shell32.dll, mydocs.dll, explorer.exe then you would rename all these files in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder.

Now since Windows is using the files you want to replace for example, the shell32.dll file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ you cannot delete it, so instead you can rename it, so rename it to shell32.dll.bak or something and then paste your patched one from the output folder of the patcher into C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and its installed. You will recieve a Windows File Protection box, just click cancel if this appears.

All files except Explorer.exe are located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\, Explorer.exe is located in C:\WINDOWS\

Reboot and you might need to re-build your icon cache, this can be done with tools such as TweakUI or you can just boot into safemode and then back into windows.

To change the drive icon like mine has the flag on my windows drive. I use a registry setting which looks like the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Documents and Settings\\vistadrive.ico"

All its doing is saying use this icon on this drive, my windows drive is my C:\ drive so the key is C etc. The @ setting is the path of the icon with the flag. Just copy the code above into notepad, change the path to the path of your icon and save it with .reg extension then run it and click yes.

I tried to get to get my C drive icon to change to the windows drive. I copied the text exactly ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]

@="C:\\Documents and Settings\\vistadrive.ico"),

saved it as a .reg file but when I run it I get the error "The specified file is not a registry script". You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor".

Does it matter what I name the file, as long as it has a .reg extention? Was I supposed to put the quotation marks in the "C:\\Documents and Settings\\vistadrive.ico" part? All of my icons were successfully changed (with IconTweaker) but I want different icons for my two hard drives (The one with the Windows symbol for the one with the OS, and the regular Vista drive for the other drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have tuneup utilites 2004 it allows you to change the individual drive icons

I have Tunup Utilities 2004 as well and I can't change just one of the hard drive icons. I can change all (both of them) and it works, but if I try and change them individually then it doesn't work. The same thing happens in IconTweaker

You can also use IconTweaker to change drive and system icons.

Guzman when you copyed the text to notepad you missed the Registry header

You must put

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

at the top of the reg file, also change @="C:\\Documents and Settings\\vistadrive.ico" to the directory you have placed the harddrive icon or it will display a general blank icon.

Thanks Mike, that worked but it still didn't display the icon (I placed the icon in my C\\Documents and Setting folder). I think there must be another issue with my machine. Like I said, I can change both my C and D hard drives to the same icons but not different ones, the same goes for different icons for my CD-RW and DVD-RW drives. I've tiried using IconTweaker and WinStyler. Both show the icon changed but it doesn't show up changed. And I've rebult the icon cache. Oh well the little windows symbol would have been cool

Mike

I am having a problem with icon 20 in shell32. It is the wrong icon and I can't figure out which one the right icon is. On the Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories for example it should be a small folder on it's side icon but it isn't. It is still the XP icon. Which Vista icon replaces icon 20? I can ResHack or is there an update to your patcher?

Mike

Will you take a look at icon 20 in shell32. I believe it should be a small file folder on its side. That is the icon to change the programs icon off of the start menu. As it is now icon 20 is a XP icon not a Vista icon.

I am glad for the update though.

In the shell32.dll for vista it doesnt have any icon change for that. The start menu is different in vista, it navigates through folders in one pane. The icon it uses is the open folder icon, you could just change Icon 20 to that for the same effect.

Hope this helps

    • Alpine Linux 3.24 released with support for COSMIC Desktop and other improvements by David Uzondu Alpine Linux 3.24 has been released with updated system packages, including Linux kernel 6.18 and Rust 1.96. The team also added IPv6 support to the system installer, and they introduced automatic serial console configuration for headless setups. System76's COSMIC desktop environment is now available in the community repo. System76 originally started building this DE because its developers found GNOME to be pretty limited. Plus, it did not help that with virtually every GNOME update, the changes broke System76's custom desktop extensions. As for system packages, the Alpine team moved GTK+ 3.0 from the main repository to the community repository due to its legacy status. py3-setuptools has been upgraded to version 82.0.0, while the old pkg_resources module has been completely dropped. The team also removed outdated packages that still relied on py3-six and GTK+ 2.0. In addition to that, libsoup 2 has been removed because the library was affected by multiple security vulnerabilities. If you're a GRUB user, the Alpine Team said that you must manually run the grub-install command with your specific device or EFI options right after upgrading your system, otherwise, your computer may fail to boot properly with the newly updated GRUB 2.14 bootloader. New installations of Alpine Linux now offer an optional path to a /usr-merged directory layout if you set the BOOTSTRAP_USR_MERGED environment variable to 1 before you execute the setup-disk command. If you already run an older installation, you can migrate manually by installing the merge-usr package and executing its binary as the root user. The team recommends this layout to align Alpine with modern Linux standards, though you should verify your custom scripts before making the switch. Alpine Linux is a pretty tiny (~5MB) Linux distro built around musl libc, BusyBox, and OpenRC. It's been around since 2005, comes with its own package manager called Alpine Package Keeper (APK), and is widely used in modern cloud computing and software deployment.
