Ordered! 12" 100gb PB....!

Laura.. I feel you!!! I've been pondering at the idea of getting an iBook for a while now, and now that I made up my mind, I found some anoying barriers (although not so exhasperating as yours!)

After comparing the small laptops market, the iBook gives more bank for the buck. A smilarly equiped Dell costs u$1300 while the iBook costs u$950 plus the iPod (which I don't really need since I have a massive Creative jukebox, but it is always a good bargain chip in IOUs and stuff) with the Student discount.

I would have gotten it today but when I got out of work (yikes.. I hate working on Sundays) the nearby Mac Store was closed!!!(I almost got it ordered today... But Why wait 3 days when I could have it tomorrow?)

I hope to make the Windows-Mac transition smoothly.. Otherwise I'll be quite dissapointed and angry at my brother! He conviced me to "ditch" (sell actually) my 15" PC laptop and get an iBook. Of course I said no! It is a Mac... But I spent the next 3 nights looking at it at the website and reading almost nothing but good things!!

that's it, once you've decided you're going Mac u want it NOW! that does sound annoying i have to say, your situation, i also don't need an ipod mini but seeing as it will cost me next to nothing.... might as well right?!

if the ppl don't ring today about collecting the PB then i am going to CRY!!!!!! (or ring them and kick up a fuss, or maybe both.....)

open it, you know you want to :)

u r a very very very bad influence!!! ur like the devil sat on my shoulder lol. yes i know i reaaaaaaaaaaaaally want to, however then i'd have to give it back to them (when they sort out the collection EVENTUALLY - still no phone call) and then i'd be sad for two weeks and have no toy to play with.

once i open it i would be very reluctant to put it back in the box and hand it over!!!!!!!

oh why does the course of true love never run smoothly........!!

whats that? its calling you? go, hug it, it wants your attention :)

Well.. I couldn't hold it anymore (and I feel REALLY sorry for you Laura) I bought the iBook today :D

It will take some more time to get used to it, but I'm getting there... and Loving it all the way :D

I had to hold the urges to rip it right there at the store and actually drove my mum around and went shopping most afternoon with the Mac in my trunk... It was an Intorable Cruelty!!

whats that? its calling you? go, hug it, it wants your attention :)

UPDATE:

 waaaaaaaa!!

it's gone......my beloved, untouched PB etc has gone :(. TNT finally came to pick it up yesterday at five thirty - we rang apple again and said why hadn't anyone been (we rang thursday early morning and they said someone would phone that day or the next about collection). we phoned again on monday to ask why apple had not sent someone from TNT, and they said (feebly) "ohhh.....it looks like we didn't tell TNT that you had something to be collected"

.............excellent. not a hard task now was it!!!

so someone came yesterday at 5.30pm and took it away.....sniff. i can reorder soon when the credit card bill for the month comes in, so i know it is going onto next months and doesn't need to be paid off in the next few days.

i definitely think i should send an email to apple complaining (if i sound exceptionally peed off, maybe, just maybe they will give me something for free ?! (A PB!!!) lol, well anything would be nice actually because i am starting to get v annoyed at the incompetant ppl working for apple.

but, i need thoughts - should i just order online? less chance of human error then right?! (i'll have to send an email first to try bag something free etc maybe) as wehn you go through the NUS link you can get the full student discount displayed on the page.

also, i am gonna get one of their printers with the ?30 off i think - probably the HP PSC 1350 multi-function, about ?60 on student discount i think? good choice or not, if anyone else has one?

and.......iSight......i'ev just discovered it, any good? maybe i should've posted this bit as a separate topic but nvm! it is ?91 which is a hell of a lot really when i was looking at ?10 to ?15 ones!! but it sounds ace. really worth it? and with discount it won't be as bad right? arg this is all coming to ?1470 at the mo, ish, plus then i will add maybe the iSight, then a 1Gb RAM from crucial or somewhere, then a laptop bag, etc etc etc!!! this will end up at aronud ?2000 if i'm not careful lol, you wouldn't think i'm a poor student would u?! but then as i and everyone else keeps saying, i am only buying it once.....or that's the plan anyway!!!

ok well sorry guys that was a brief update turning into a longggggggggg ramble!!

laura.

EDIT - ps, should i bother getting my iPod personalised, as then there can be problems cos u can't return it right? and surely u can jsut get it engraved quite cheaply later if u wanted to?!

Look at the bright side: you don't those annoying boxes bothering you :s

Regarding the memory, give yourself some time before buying and you don't have to buy Mac specific ram BTW. I added a Crucial Value Select 256 stick... Worked like a charm :D (I had it laying around from a Newegg.com mess up from my old notebook).

The iSight is a nice gadget, but would you really use it? I personally don't have a use for it (and I'm a college student too), and having so many PC webcams compatible with Mac available, I'll say there isn't a good justification for the expense... (although you might think differently... Just my $.02)

The personalized iPod is Ok I think (hey! It won't get stolen!) i'll say.. I don't think they'll make the same screw up twice! And just to be sure, yes, use the online store!! (although have a nice chat with Apple over the phone. The least you derserve is to have the machine ASAP since you had to wait almost an extre week because of their mess up!)

Nice job on buying the ibook, you wont be disappointed Trancosrt, oh and good luck on getting that PB laura7112

So far I'm not dissapointed, but Being a Windows power user (I knew my around most of the corners of the OS) going to Mac is quite disconcerting. Still, I love the iBook.

The only thing I don't like is that it won't mount my Xp shares automatically. I solved the mp3 sharing issue sharing the library with iTunes (but I have to have iTunes on my Pc and I don't really use it). Oh! I miss my right button! (Luckily I had a MS Intellieye mouse for my old notebook whihch I plugged in right away which fulfills my Right-clicking needs :D)

yes you're right - glad the boxes went!! and also the iSight, yes it is far too much really, I just hadnt seen any others for Mac much cheaper with good reviews, that's all.

i think i won't get the iPod personalised, just in cases!!!! i can always get it done later if i want at an engravers or something. im only getting the thing cos it will be ?28 instead of ?28, its not exactly necessary so i'l get it without engraving. quicker also the delivery then maybe.

UPDATE ON SCREWUP!:

received email back from apple after i wrote a niiiiiiiiice longgggggggggg moaning email last night, including extracts from emails passed to and fro, all dates and all problems etc. hope they had fun reading that!!! well i had to say something, i was beyond fuming now and normally i have to say i am quite placid in terms of, i will just say oh ok and wait for the goods.

so, they replied and (mostly) apologised tho there were excuses at some points, hinting i misunderstood what i was told, or that i should've contacted them sooner, or by phone instead of email first, and that it was not down to them but to TNT (bullpoo!!). but all in all the email was good result - she said it was understandable if i wanted to order online this time tho she guaranteed there'd not be a problem if i did it over the phone again........

so, i can order it in the next few days (again lol) i think, online, then ring them and they will make sure that it is set to highest highest priority for delivery!!!! (i said in the email, the least i would expect a good company to do, is to ensure the next order is received in the least possible time after such an intolerable delay)

also, Apple will offer me a "goodwill gesture" - either an accessory or a partial refund. i emailed back briefly asking for details of the gesture (ie max price off or value of accessory) so i could alter my order accordingly -

as i am now gonna get:

12" 100GB PWITHb>!!!!!!! Superdrive

4gb pink unpersonalised iPod mini

HP printer (the 5130 or something.......) multi function, scanner printer copier thingee for ?70 instead of ?100 when u buy a mac (or rather ?60 on student discount)

then, i'll see what she says max discount is (she might not reveal it now, she said i shud contact after receiving my entire order and then we could arrange something...) but i want to know cos then i could get the discount and get a bag (pls see my other post if u have a really good bag or any advice on one!!!) with the extra money, and even some towards my RAM maybe.

oooooooooh they have come thru in the end. even tho the email still kinda blamed me in some ways. but, still, it is a result all the same.

not long now hopefully then, will order when they email back about "goodwill gesture"!!

lau xx

damn, all I gotta say I've had a good time with Apple and its delivery services.

When I had the white spots syndrome on my laptop I rang them up and they sent me a box next day. And I got it back pretty quick.

Yesterday I phoned apple my iPod failing. I got a box today! And sent it off within the Hour, good ole UPS!

Hope you don't have any problems this time round!

i am ringing Apple in around 45 50 minutes, it said give 60 minutes to let the order be processed before ringing them to make sure it is high priority etc. But I will also send them an email afterwarsd ensuring they've done it!!!!!!

thanks guys!!!

well, still don't know Apple's good will gesture.........they said if i chose accessory it would be to a slightly higher value than a refund-off that i would get - hence i think ill choose the accessory lol!!

let's play a game - guess the value of the goodwill gesture from Apple!!!:

Me first, tho i have to say i'm gonna be optimistic, cos i want the iSight lol:

1. ?80 - ?100 (pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!)

anyone else had goodwill gestures from Apple, why, and how much approx?! i'd like to know in advance so i can work out what to get from them.......they won't decide until i get my final order eventually so they can "assess inconvenience caused" etc!! well!!!!! they shouldn't be the ones calling the shots at the moment lol!!

go for a discounted iSight, pay what you would for a decent Web Cam if you had a PC :o

Apple can "let you off" the remainder of the iSights value.

586435306

yeah! i'm actually hoping to just say, ok, here's the deal - i want the iSight, and then i will accept that as the goodwill gesture to cover the time i have had to spend sorting this out, and to compensate me for the weeks extra without a laptop".

thats the plan, anywy...

I've been following this for a while now and there are some things that need to be said. Instead of opening the box and checking whether or not you had a superdrive or combo drive (which if you had the superdrive it would've saved you all this "trouble") you panicked and tried to cancel your order. I see no reason to be mad at Apple because they were unable to stop one out of the thousands of delivery packages that are sent out. It was very gracious of them to offer you all these "compensations."

586436958

thanks for your opinions, here's mine -

no point opening the box when i had an order confirmation informing me the order with combo drive had been shipped, Apple confirmed it had not been created with a superdrive as well, and when i received the order, i had a receipt sent that said it had a combo drive, and the delivery note attached to the boxes also said combo drive. Along with that, the guy i had ordered through confirmed that the price i had paid was for a COMBO drive. nuff said? if not, sorry!

The only reason i think i have to be ENTIRELY mad at Apple, the other stuff just annoyed me etc, was a woman from Apple lying down the phone to me, outright, saying, "i've just cancelled your order and it won't be delivered". did she? no. then why say it?! just to get me off the phone? pretty poor i think.

and that Apple also said "ok i've just sent the details to TNT and they will now know you have a parcel to collect. they'll ring in the next couple of days" did they? no. did they ring in the next 4 days? no. because Apple had NOT just sent the details to TNT, another liar - maybe Apple does not only make fab computers but also people prone to lying? why say he had done it, if he hadn't. why not just say, ok, i'm going to try get in touch with TNT once you're off the phone." even suggest maybe that i ring back to check they had done it?! i wouldn't really have minded that.

anyway, just my 2 cents worth from this side of the situation!!!!!!

EDIT:It was very gracious of them to offer you all these "compensations.":>

alllllllll of these compensations?! how many are there, i'd like to know. unless you're counting every penny separately? hmm. they have offered me a "goodwill gesture". that's the point, it's a goodwill gesture because they don't want to lose a customer, or have me complain to someone even more about them. and i hardly think it can be called gracious after all of the idiots i have had to deal with throughout this order.

    • GitHub removes manual model selection from Copilot free and student plans by Karthik Mudaliar GitHub is removing the ability to manually select an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans, making its automatic routing system the default and only way to choose a model. This means users on these tiers will no longer be able to deliberately select a particular OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Microsoft model for a task. In its announcement, GitHub said Copilot Auto will dynamically choose what it considers the best model for each request. Free and Student accounts will retain access to models from multiple families, although the available selection will continue to depend on the restrictions attached to each plan. GitHub did not identify a fixed pool of models that Auto will always use, and its documentation warns that model availability can change over time. GitHub describes Auto as more than a random fallback system. On supported surfaces, its task-optimization technology evaluates the complexity of a request alongside real-time information about model health and availability. Straightforward prompts can be routed to faster and less expensive models, while more demanding coding tasks may be sent to higher-cost reasoning models. The company says this approach should reduce rate limiting, latency, and failed requests. Auto generally selects one model along natural prompt-caching boundaries rather than repeatedly switching models during a session, as GitHub found that mid-session changes increased costs without producing sufficient improvements in output quality. Users can still check which model generated a response. In Copilot Chat, the information appears when hovering over an answer, while Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent display the selected model alongside their output. Auto is available in Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI, and the cloud agent, with the exact implementation and release status varying between supported development environments. The latest restriction follows several months of adjustments to Copilot’s individual plans. GitHub temporarily halted new Pro, Pro+, and Student subscriptions in April as it sought to manage demand and service reliability. It later introduced token-based billing and began gradually reopening individual-plan registrations on June 17. Alongside the picker change, GitHub is retiring the “Preview” label from Microsoft-developed models. It argues that the label is no longer necessary because Auto handles model routing and models are continuously updated behind the scenes.

    • Google reportedly set to lose two key Gemini and DeepMind researchers to Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly preparing to lose two more prominent artificial intelligence researchers, with Gemini contributors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join rival AI developer Anthropic. According to a report from Bloomberg, both researchers are viewed internally as important contributors to Google’s flagship Gemini model family. Adler worked on Google’s AI coding efforts, while Pritzel was involved in the process used to train AI systems. Neither company has publicly confirmed the moves. The report also does not say when the researchers will formally leave Google or what positions they will hold at Anthropic. Training a large AI model requires decisions covering its architecture, data preparation, distributed computing infrastructure, and post-training methods that shape how the finished system behaves. Researchers with experience operating at the scale of Gemini are consequently difficult to replace quickly. Both Adler and Pritzel have previously contributed to Google DeepMind’s scientific research as well. They are listed among the authors of the company’s work on expanding AlphaFold protein-structure predictions across entire proteomes, alongside AlphaFold researchers including John Jumper. The reported departures arrive shortly after another important change within Google’s Gemini organization. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving Google for OpenAI, after returning to the search company in 2024 through its deal with Character.AI. Shazeer is particularly well known as one of the authors of the Transformer paper, whose architecture became the foundation for most modern large language models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been recruiting recognizable figures from other leading laboratories. OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May. His move, followed by the reported recruitment of several Google researchers, suggests Anthropic is strengthening the research teams responsible for the core capabilities of future Claude models rather than concentrating solely on product and enterprise sales. The competition is complicated by the companies’ extensive commercial relationships. Anthropic competes directly with Google’s Gemini models, but it also relies on Google as an infrastructure partner. In April, Anthropic announced an expanded agreement with Google and Broadcom covering multiple gigawatts of next-generation Tensor Processing Unit capacity. • Google adds built-in computer control to Gemini 3.5 flash by Karthik Mudaliar Google has added Computer Use as a built-in tool in Gemini 3.5 Flash, giving developers a single model that can reason about a task and operate graphical interfaces across browsers, mobile devices, and desktop environments. The feature is available through the Gemini API and Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, although it remains a preview feature for now. Computer Use enables an AI agent to examine screenshots and return actions such as mouse clicks, scrolling, and keyboard input. A developer’s application must execute those actions, capture the resulting screen, and send it back to Gemini, creating a continuous loop until the task is completed. Google says the integration can be used for activities including repetitive form filling, application testing, research across multiple websites, and longer enterprise workflows. Gemini 3.5 Flash can work with browser, mobile, and desktop environments, whereas Google’s earlier standalone Computer Use model was primarily positioned around browser interaction. The main change is consolidation. Computer control was previously offered through the separate Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview model. As Neowin reported when that model was introduced, it was designed to interpret a visual interface and generate actions without requiring a website-specific API. Google later brought Computer Use to preview versions of Gemini 3 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash in January 2026. The latest release now incorporates the tool into the stable Gemini 3.5 Flash model rather than requiring developers to select a specialized model solely for interface automation. Gemini 3.5 Flash itself was announced in May as Google’s latest fast model for coding and multi-step agent workflows. It supports a one-million-token input context window and up to 65,000 output tokens, along with adjustable thinking levels that let developers trade additional reasoning for lower latency and cost. Google also added that Gemini 3.5 Flash received targeted adversarial training for computer-use scenarios. The company is also offering safeguards that can require user confirmation before sensitive or irreversible actions and automatically stop a workflow when suspected prompt injection is detected. Its developer documentation describes configurable protections for areas such as financial transactions and changes to sensitive records. Google isn't the first to bring Computer Use to its platform. Anthropic has made computer control available through Claude, while OpenAI has continued improving computer-use performance in its recent models. Microsoft has also applied the concept to business workflows, including a Computer Use capability for the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
