AIM Triton 0.6.17 Released

Recommended Posts

Hope everyone had a good weekend.  We did tests this weekend on the sign on hang issue.  In about 30 tests we hung twice.  After the hang we don't hang in any subsequent sign on attempt.  For those with issues you hang at every attempt?

To get your machine clean of any previous installs, here are the steps QA says to use:

Uninstall Triton

Uninstall AOL Explorer

Delete the following:

      Directory: c:\program files\common files\aol

      Directory: c:\program files\aol

      Directory: c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\aol

      Registry key:  HKLM\Software\America Online

Then try installing beta 6 and check your results.  We are doing more investigation today on the sign on issue.  Saving prefs will be tackled next.  Thanks for your patience.  :)

Are prefs saved server side at all? Because I installed Triton beta 6 (clean install) on a fresh Vista install and it remembered all my settings? This is on a completely different OS/partition.

Yes, and this was the case in the aim 5.x series to a smaller extent. Certain prefs were host based. Privacy pref have been that way for even longer. AOL has had host based prefs going as far back as 7.x I believe. Triton does have host based prefs, and personally its about time. :)

Wow, that is very cool. Makes it so much easier on the user.

Maybe this has something to do with it?

Nope known issue. Hopefully that gets addressed in the next release but no promisses.

As we have all gone through. I myself can't unstall the new build due to the fact that it gets stuck at 85% done on current file and 30% done on total progress. I've reported this as a bug to AOL without any response to a fix. An error message comes up as IS - 2001 "A file was not found." In my search, I've did an install with just AOL installer and then with Aim Ad Hack. Both produced the same results. I deleted all registry keys with "AOL", "triton", "america online", you name it. Also deleted all files with AOL or AIM in it. Tried again with same results. I looked at the install log to see which file it couldn't find and this is what I came up with:

10/08/2005 13:42:43 Attempt to launch installer: [C:\DOCUME~1\CHASEC~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\is-3EU03.tmp\muinst.exe /S]

Red indicates the problems. System.dll and nsz3D.tmp are not present during installation or after. The file nsz3D.tmp can be different during another install(different name). This always happens after "Call: 424". The installer tries to locate the file, but always fails. I also noticed that the system.dll file is in a different tmp folder than the one the installer tries to look for. Mine is in a folder called nst6E.tmp which was created the very first day I tried to install the new version. Hopefully this can spread some light for you guys and figure this out.

Note: Aim Ad Hack's temp directory for triton is C:\WINDOWS\Temp\(file name differs)

While AOL's installer is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL Downloads\(file name differs)

Both of the temp directories are for all of the installer files. Aim Ad Hack's temp directory will be deleted if you stop the installer or if the error message comes up. AOL's will remain in it's location.

If you follow my post #98 in this thread, you will see how to do a clean uninstall. Instead of using an uninstaller you can clean the machine of triton via deleting the directories I mention in that post you should be good to go. Let me know if you have any issues.

PS - Deleting these directories by hand is not recommended and should only be used as a last resort if the uninstaller does not work as in cubmoney's case.

I followed your steps already SULAX50. I've attempted all possible ways including yours, with no results like in my previous post. I've downloaded triton about 10 times, but all hang during installation saying that a file is missing error IS - 2001. My previous post was to inform you of my problem on what I'm going through. As far as the installer for AOL, I think that they should have a full download which means all the files from the installation in a zip or rar file as a choice. That way, I won't have to keep waiting to download it every single time just because of an error. I have a slow connection and it takes 33 minutes to download it once. I downloaded it 10 times, so I wasted 5 hours and 50 minutes trying to get the installation to work, still with no success. I know that all the files for the installation are stored at http://download.newaol.com/clients/triton_1.1.12.2/(file name). Because of it being off access to the public, I can't download each file unless I know the name of all the files for triton. Also, having this full download may eliminate the problem with the file missing error that I always get. Thank you for any help and for reading this post.

Lotta posts in this thread, hmm.. Likely a few version jumps too... Oh well this is the only place I've managed to find where people can just vent their feedback or issues..

:ninja:

I haven't used an AIM product in a while, was growing pretty acustomed to Trillian actually, especially the logging capabilities, but recently that's changed and I've been having a bit of a skiff trying to decide whether or not I still like AIM as a client both now and for the future (based on this Triton stuff).

I was severely irritated to see the current non-beta AIM does not like the idea of remember window settings, though Triton seems to be a lot better at it, although it DID have me fooled at first.. I hope there would be some kind of 'classic' look skin in the future all the same.. That being said, I did not appreciate the Explorer or Plexo (or whatever its called... I'm tired) stuff being installed.. Withouth so much as a prompt asking me (again I'm tired, and I do not recall being asked but I could be wrong). I know folks can hide that stuff in the EULA and all that, but thats downright shady and we know that.. Please consider clear and visible prompts for intalling these types of things in the future.. I know I heard the phrase "we are not a non-profit company" thrown around in here somewhere, but then again... This program has AOL's name on it and I don't think AOL is exactly in dire need of the allmighty $$$ in that kind of way either.. In short, I don't buy that kind of defense, so feel free to flame on I suppose :)

I like the potential it has but relying too much on plugins is frankly, a turnoff.. I know people have mentioned things such as font settings, colors, what have you.. Well where is the harm in supporting plugins to modify a wise variety of functions, but at the same time including your own basic support for general modification like in past clients ? It seems to be the trend here is, more credit for less work, or something like that. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a consumer ;)

I can say right now, that minimizing the app via the X button, or other means isn't producing a systray icon or anything.. That's kind of... umm yeah. ;) And those default IM handle colors? Yuck, but thats my personal opinion. It would be nice if the windows could remember their last function mode, so I don't have to look at a bunch of junk when I click on someones name and then start typing in some text box at the very bottom of a cluttered-info looking window. I'd rather have it just jump back to the IM mode (optional setting of course).

Oh well I'm sure this has come off snappy enough already, and its about all I can think of currently.. By the way.. in terms of the new window design. I REALLY like the file sending tab.. Though I still feel a bit confused over whether or not we have, or are supposed to see a Direct Connect feature ? So you can paste pics, etc right into the window like before.

Anyway.. Yeah I came off gruff.. But I think that I may grow to like this new version, despite all its quirks... I do have one last question.. Hows ICQ support going to work out for this? Is it in there already? Is there ever going to be anything on ICQ's end that would allow people who don't want "AOL" software, to communicate with AOL screennames, like how we can add their UIN's to our list and talk ?

Hope that made sense..

(v0.7.13)

Ok so it seems the process was hanging and doing goofy things and that was part of the problem I had with the systray icon not appearing and such.. Seems like the program also changed a tad since restarting it too.. Not bad in any way of course. Must be that auto-update thing I thought I saw mentioned.. Keep up the nice work

  • 2 weeks later...

edt - i found a way to do it, saw it on google ^^

    • So how did you solve the problem? Disabling Secure Boot isn’t a solution.
    • Another devilish issue surrounding these certificates is what can happen with old, unsuspecting PCs that nevertheless have Secure Boot enabled. In my case, it was a Dell with a 3rd-gen Core chip (so about 13 years old). As of the last few weeks, it was suddenly BSOD'g within about 5 minutes of booting. Turns out it was because of MS's "Secure-Boot-Update" scheduled task, which is scheduled to run 5 minutes after login. It's explained in gory detail here (this is not my post, but it was where I found the answer), but the short version is that this legacy system would need fairly elaborate, manual certificate intervention since MS's automatic cert update method cannot work. How to do that is linked late in the thread. https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...od-caused-by-scheduled-task Secure Boot wasn't at all important for this particular PC, so I disabled it to be done with the problem.

Winhance 26.06.12 changelog: Features Builder Mode — build a Winhance config file or autounattend.xml without changing anything on the PC you're sitting at. Flip the new mode switcher to Builder, set everything the way you want it, and save the result as a Winhance config or an autounattend file ready for deployment on other machines. Sponsors & Supporters page — the exit donation dialog is gone. In its place, an in-app page (heart icon or the More menu) recognizes the businesses and individual supporters who keep Winhance free. It works offline and is fully localized. Change History — Winhance now keeps a receipt of everything it does. ChangeHistory.txt records every setting change (before and after values) and every app install or removal, with clear headers for config imports and bulk actions. Open it from the More menu. Hebrew language support — Winhance is now available in 29 languages. New Explorer customizations: desktop icon visibility toggles, This PC folder visibility, an icon cache size setting, and automatic thumbnail cache cleanup. New "All apps view" setting for the redesigned Windows 11 Start menu, and the Windows 11 system tray icons setting is now a dropdown with more control. App-local UI zoom — press Ctrl +/-/0 or use Ctrl+MouseWheel to scale the whole app, just like a browser. New External Apps: EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar Games Launcher, PowerShell, and Helium Browser. Bug Fixes Layouts no longer clip when the Windows text size slider is set above 100%. Accessibility: Narrator now announces setting names on toggles and dropdowns, previously unlabeled buttons are labeled, and progress updates are announced. Silent updates now respect your custom install location instead of reverting to the default. Cancel in Review Mode no longer clears your app selections. OneNote is now detected correctly for Win32 Click-to-Run installs. Clean Start Menu applies more reliably by also writing the group policy path. WinGet errors are no longer silent — error details now show in the terminal output. Fixed a startup crash on older Windows builds caused by a .NET runtime regression. Config import now converts power setting values correctly and no longer re-applies an already-active power plan. Improvements App icons load noticeably faster and cover almost everything now, including legacy capabilities and optional features — they come from a dedicated, checksum-validated icon repository and are fetched in parallel. Software & Apps polish: per-icon tooltips, extra table columns, an app sort dropdown, relocated search, and a cleaner compact view. A warning now appears when the Connected Devices Platform Service is set to Manual or Disabled, since some Windows features depend on it. • Of course the problem was Secure Boot's new certificates. Install media created by the official Media Creation Tool is already signed with a valid certificate from Microsoft, so maybe that certificate isn't "up-to-date" enough for machines with the new ones installed in the UEFI. There's really no other logical explanation.
