Try to keep windows at a reasonable size and hide the taskbar (the taskbar is highly inefficient at switching tasks).

I maximize almost everything 'cept for IM messages. I only maximize the latter when it's going to be a long convo or a serious one... For the rest I maximize it all and alt-tab to the window I want...
