Question

I would like to take a moment and thank everyone that participated in the Upitfree.com contest over the last week. Neowin is the home of some truly talented designers and graphic artists. You guys have all done a great job. This was no easy task, but I have selected (what I believe to be) the 10 best designs as the contest finalists. Now, I would like for my fellow Neowin members to vote for their favorite design. Since this is a community site, community input is important to me. The design I would choose might not be the one everyone else likes. Please keep in mind that the winning design must be "codable," and vote accordingly.

Because there where so many great designs, I would feel bad picking only 1 winner and letting everyone's talent go to waist (so to speak). So, thanks to Contrast Hosting all 10 finalists will receive 6 months of free web hosting! Yea, you read that right. All contest finalists please CONTACT ME so I can get you setup. You can either email me ([email protected]) or send me a PM. The hosting package will include the following:

  • 200mb Disk Space
  • 2gb Monthly Data Transfer
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • Unlimited Email Forwarders
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • cPanel
  • Hosting for your current domain or a FREE subdomain.

So, what are you waiting for? Get voting!!!

1) Visit http://www.upitfree.com/contest/finalists/ and look at all the finalists designs (don't vote until you look at all of them).

2) Vote for your favorite design!

UPDATE!

Well, I have good news and bad news...

The bad news is the contest is over.

The good news is that Cyco is the winner!

Cyco has decided (being the good guy he is) to split his prize money amongst all of the finalists. All finalists please PM me with your PayPal address so you can be rewarded for your efforts.

Thanks again to everyone who participated! The community involvement has been oustanding!

Well done Cyco (Y). Also Void you can keep my $10 :p as when it is converted to Uk GBP its about ?6 also paypal takes some money too : but generous of Cyco. Well done mate, I really did like your design.

I was trying to think of a better way to split the prize money up, but I couldn't come up with anything.

Congrats Cyco. I knew that void was deciding between yours and mail's and he seems to have chosen you.

And that was really nice of you splitting the money, though worthless. I would have kept it.:pp

Yes, I was trying to decide between Cyco and Mail since yesterday. Both where truely great designes. I had a hard time and didn't get much sleep last night. I can't tell you how many times I went back and forth between them. When I started this contest, I didnt think we would have this kind of turnout. Boy was I wrong. Turned out good.

congrads cyco

Thanks, my vote was on yours.

And that was really nice of you splitting the money, though worthless. I would have kept it.

It was more symbolic then enabling someone to get that house they've always wanted. I never intended to keep the price money if I did win, and when I did I talked to void about it and we agreed it'd be a good idea to split between the other finalists instead.

wow i didnt read about cyco splitting the prize money until now, thats very generous. thanks cyco, voidunknown and all the participants involved

one thing i want to say really, is that neowin should encourage more of these contests, its a creative and fun process and gets members involved

Yeh Cyco, i can't express how nice of a gesture this is. Very generous of you. Your design was very nice and it's not hard to see why void chose it. Good work man :)

Also, i agree with whoever said that there should be more of these competitions on the forums. It's been great fun and the guys involved have been very nice and encouraging.

Thanks to everyone i guess! :D

I vote for Mail!

Congrats Cyco!

Quick question.

If I link a transparent gif with the "thumb" in the url, it look like this. 293.jpeg

But if I link with the "image" in the url it looks the way I want. 293.jpeg

Is linking like this right?

Sorry if this might sound dumb.

You be crazy! I'm sure you just link the image in the url code..

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
