- The revamped dashboard shows the new "In a Call" status which can be automatically enabled when starting a Windows Live Call (an internal link to this page reveals the availability of this feature in Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States first).

- Next to the e-mail, Sharing Folders and Space icons, you'll see a new calendar/clock icon which is in fact just a link to the Windows Live Today popup. BTW: I have Messenger Plus! Live, hence the Plus! icon.

- Extra security options, eg. "Encrypt contact list data so that it is not accessible outside of Windows Live Messenger" With other words: don't let someone steal your buddies!

- Here's how the conversation windows now looks like. Again, ignore the two Plus! icons, but notice the new tiny webcam icon.

- I also noticed different sounds for a new alert, new e-mail, new message and when a contact signs in. I'm not sure whether these are final.

Some have noticed that, analogous to the game activities icon in conversation windows, the "Games" icon for personal status messages has been updated. In case you didn't know, you can use the MSN Messenger Application Monitor addon to integrate games and Office icons into your status message.

Like we learned yesterday, a new option will allow us to remove the "Contact says:" before every message. This is not literally every message, just the ones sent in a sequence (that means less text clutter when chatting with those word-per-word talkers). With this option enabled, a flood of consecutive messages will thus be preceded by only one "Contact says:" notice.

And like most betas, this build has got bugs too. For instance, sounds don't get muted when you set your status to Busy.

NO LINKS. POSTING A LINK WILL GET YOU WARNS + RESTRICTIONS.

Good to hear. I liked the new UI. Not too sure about the Encrypted Contacts though, seems pointless to me.

pointless? what you mean you like it that anyone else logged in on your PC could view all information about your contacts?

All I really care about is the new ui, everything else sounds like bloat features.

..how are they bloat? they a simple obvious little features that are needed to make the product better.

Won't make this release. Expect it in Windows Live Messenger 2 (Messenger 9?) I suppose.

your right in that it won't make this release but it should be here before WL Messenger 9 :)

Wernt they gona have a Yahoo intergradton? where we can view our yahoo contacts, and yahoo be part of the microsoft pasport acount?

any news on that?

didnt they say the second quarter of '06 when they originally siad this was going to happen. but this could have slipped.

ideas.live.com

Well according to OSNN.net, Windows Live Messenger Public Beta has begun...now anyone can login through the client after downloading it from ideas.live.com . But also, it made references to a new UI...and because of what I heard;

Windows Live Messenger 8 April Refresh is now out, you have to uninstall previous builds before it will install though...I will get a build number ASAP but for now...dig in!

edit:

wha? the file I downloaded was the current build! WTH? This must NOT be it...

Well, at least the open to the public part is true...:(

 nothing about it on connect...

latest build is still 0566

OSNN.net says Nothing about an april refresh.. you made that up.. it only says it went public, which from my understanding, went public weeks ago.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • Here is the new Surface Laptop Ultra wallpaper in high resolution by Taras Buria Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, its brand-new high-end laptop powered by NVIDIA's brand-new RTX Spark processor. As usual, Microsoft gives each new device a unique wallpaper, and the Surface Laptop Ultra is no exception. While the device is not publicly available yet, somebody has already extracted its wallpaper, giving everyone a chance to get a piece of the upcoming laptop in its full-resolution glory. The Surface Laptop Ultra has a very dark, abstract wallpaper that resembles the stock wallpapers in Windows Server, albeit with much less color. Having this dark, grim wallpaper highlights the laptop's mini-LED display and its ability to cut off parts of the screen's backlight to achieve OLED-like black levels. However, if you also like light wallpapers, we made a white version by simply inverting its colors. You can download both wallpapers below (click the image, right-click it, and select "Save as"): The Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to launch later this year. Microsoft is not revealing full details yet, including the price. However, Microsoft confirmed up to 1 petaflop of AI performance and RTX 5070-level of GPU performance. The heart of the laptop has up to 20 CPU cores and 6,144 GPU cores. Additionally, Microsoft and NVIDIA boast high CPU efficiency for all-day battery life. As for the display, it is a 15-inch mini-LED display with a pixel density of 262 ppi and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. Of course, not everyone needs this amount of power, and certainly not everyone can afford it. For those who need a more affordable device, Microsoft is also preparing the next-generation Surface Pro powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. Weeks ahead of the announcement, details about this computer were leaked by a retailer. Do you like the Surface Laptop Ultra's stock wallpaper? Share your thoughts in the comments. • From all that I've read on the subject--not that much, really--it looks to me like companies and parents are trying to protect themselves from children using their parents accounts to run up giant bills, sometimes in the thousands of dollars, and the first the parents know about it is when they get sued... Internet companies have been sued for tailoring their ads to children, which is kind of old news. My belief is that policing starts at home with the parents, and the reason that so many laws that can't be enforced are being passed is because parents are eschewing their responsibilities, claiming not enough time, not enough knowledge, etc. Giving kids cell phones sans Internet connectivity is a good place to start--confine Internet activity to PCs in the home that the parents regulate. My kids are all grown and gone, I'm happy to say... They have their own kids to worry about.

    • BTW DXVK is also available on Windows and offers similar benefits like on Linux when it comes to performance, at least in some titles. The Raceroom racing sim for example even offers DXVK as one of its officially supported options and it can achieve ridiculous improvements in certain situations, like quite literally doubling (or more) the framerates
