Chris Pirillo says it like it is...

Yep right software update in linux is really easy, most of the time is not available or some other programs... you need to edit yum.conf, etc... really easy... nothing to say...

No, you need not edit anything. If you use a distro like Ubuntu (I'm guessing SUSE and others are probably very similar, I just haven't used them in a while), you can download and install software with one click. Everything has a UI, there is no configuration file editing necessary. In fact it's easier than Windows because the software is all in one spot and the installation is handled for you.
OSX maybe... but anyway you dont have this amount and quality of software, that you got on windows...
Perhaps you don't have the huge amount of software available, but probably 50% of the utilities and programs you can find for Windows are crap and don't do what they're supposed to do. I had better luck finding better quality programs on OS X than I ever did on Windows. But this point is probably somewhat subjective, so I'm not going to argue it any further.

RC1 is a memory hog no doubt. How many boxes are still out there that have 512MB of ram or less in them?

A lot I would say and how many people that own these boxes will try to upgrade to vista? Not all of them but a few will and they'll find out how bad vista is when it comes to ram usage.

Just for the hell of it i installed vista on and athlon I have laying around that only has 512MB of ram.

Now on a clean install of vista it takes up over 70% of the ram has damn near 40 processes running and has 10,000+ handles going.

Now we know the os is lying about the processes cause there?s got to be close to 10 svchost.exe's running which all have more services hidden within them. Turn superfetch off and its no better it still hog's up the entire ram. Why does vista need all this sh*t on in the background and just what is going on that needs all of that running by default?

It may not be the next Windows ME but its going to be close. And I agree with Pirillo on the interface issues. For the normal user it's going to be 3.1 to 95 all over again. [/rant]

Now where did I put that Windows XP cd.

Maybe because it handles memory management differently?

Maybe because it uses up the ram for the system till programs need it?

Maybe because its better to use the ram for system processes than have idle wasted memory?

Get a clue please.

I like Chris Pirillo, but he is a total UI nazi. The under the hood changes of Vista make it a solid release, but I agree the UI looks and feels strange to me, but I think that's just because it is new to me. I'm not going to use Vista as my main OS until solid ATI drivers come out that can play certain games well.

Which games?

I agree. It's totally confusing for a new user of Windows or a new user of Vista from XP/2000/98 etc. I think the worst thing they have done is not include start menu icons for the different options. This slows down productivity because I have to spend 2 seconds actually reading the items instead of identifying them visually. I know this doesn't sound like a lot but throughout the OS there are inconsistences like this and these seconds lost mount up.

True say, i think they tried to make the UI as fancy as possible, they did well with glass and aurora but then thye just didnt know wat to do with the rest of it so went for something complex.Yes it takes much loner i feel to find wat u need in vista as much has changed, but i think we get use to it who knows.

Totally agree with him, Vista lacks a cohesive user experience / user interface.

It doesn?t look or behave similarly across any part of the operating system. Even more sad? That?s by design, folks.

Yu:yes:yes: he speaks the truth.

That's it. I'm selling my PC hardware. Time to switch. I had hopes for RC1 and they have been dashed.

I agree with Chris.

For example, we see windows with the titlebar text near the top edge of window, others do not have text at all, other have the titltbar text near the "back" button.

Some windows have a large titlebar, some others have a small titlebar. Some windows do not have menubar, some others do. Also, you can have all your glassy windows looking very light, but you maximize them and dang, all black. Even colors are inconsistent. Dark taskbar vs light window borders.

That trully sux. Vista UI is a disapointment.

If you take a look on Linux, Gnome is totally consistent. All Apps look the same, if you use the same toolkit. For example, on my Ubuntu system I only use GTK apps, so, all my desktop and apps look exactly the same. And I like that.

Also, even OSX two-themes seem more cosnsistent than this thing. At least they go well together.

For god sake! 5 YEARS of development, and they could not a) implement their own ideas, figuring on early concepts, b) make everything look consistent and c) take that lousy 1995 dialogs?

As to the RAM usage issue: Vista obviously assigns RAM much more efficiently than XP does. How else is it possible that it's noticeably faster at multitasking than XP is, even with 'only' 512 MBytes of RAM?

The one that kills me with Vista is that if you open the Windows Photo Gallery and WMP11 you'll find a load of wasted space at the bottom of the window, in WMP11 you can grab that space and move the app around but with Windows Photo Gallery you cannot. That's a true indication that things really aren't linking together.

What i hate is the new all programs inside the start menu thing. I have to scroll down to see all my program folders, whereas when it opened out i kinda remembered where each was. Also the network panel, network centre and network connections annoys me. It shows useless information and you have to dig to find what xp practically gave you.

I always find it strange when some people say who cares what the UI is like. Unless you're using your PC for coding or something like that I think it's one of the most important aspects of the OS, only security being more important.

If you are like the average computer user who uses their PC for e-mail, web browsing, IM, photo editing and gaming the UI is extremely important, who wants to look at an ugly UI for hours? Now I'm no Mac fan boy but I find the OS X UI very pleasant, I'm not saying it's perfect but it is nice. I don't know what to make of Vista yet , there are aspects of it that I like (the way windows slide open smoothly, and parts of it that I absolutely detest like how the taskbar turns black when a window is maximized. It is really a hodge podge of different looks, sort of like a lot of people had their hand in it and there was no one final decision. I think Microsoft isn't sure how Vista should look itself. Just one example, in Windows Calendar there is the ugly blue bar which looks terrible. At least they could have made the color user changeable.

But by far the biggest crime is the black maximize window issue, for the life of me I will never understand how that made it into Vista. I really want that addressed.

sad to say but it's true... Chris hits the spot.

all MS fanboys can now go to bed...

You sir are the worst type of neowinian. Posting a flippant remark with no sources, quotes or anything worthy of merit and it seems your only point was to start a war. I see great things for you.

That's a perfect example of people "not getting it". You're absolutely right in what you say, if you had to keep doing things the way that you've always done it. Normally when you go to the Programs menu you know what you want to run, right? Well, try typing it into the search. You want to run Word? Just type "Word" in the bar. Vista is making a lot of things different, which is why people are complaining. Just try the new way. 2-3 years from now everyone will be used to the new and better way of doing things in Vista.

I know people will say "why do I need to use the keyboard!!!111!!". Just try it. Press the Windows key on your keyboard (after all, you are using it if you're posting here) and start typing. Tell me that isn't faster than searching for the program in the Programs Menu. If you have a program you use a lot, pin it.

who in the world is Chris Pirillo? lol anyway that's just his personal opinion, I think Vista's interface is vastly superior to the XPs one, right now every time I log into my XP partition I just stay there a few minutes, you simply can't stand it after you try Aero Glass for a while, Vista's GUI is so smooth, most people who complain do it because they have slow machines where Vista is not performing nicely or they have video cards which do not support all the effects etc, others have just seen screenshots without actually trying it, let alone the superiority related to security, Vista is such a vast improvement over any other Microsoft operating system that I don't understand why people complain so much. My advice, wait for RTM to give final judgments, and be sure your PC meets and exceeds Vista's minimun hardware requirements.

Vista won't fail but it will be another Windows ME and everyone knows it.

Nope. It might be more of a new Windows 2000 than ME. We're not talking about yet another operating system built on top of 98 with System Restore, Movie Maker, a new funky WMP slapped on top of it, and DOS shoved under the carpet - and calling it 'new'.

someone that has the benefit of being in the inner circle of Jim Alchin, that's who Chris Pirillo is. So you can laugh out loud all day and night long, it doesn't change the fact that deep down inside Alchin and the rest of the crew at MS know they screwed up royaly with Vista. Instead of using 5+ years of development time to truly revolutionize the OS world and show the world that MS does in fact still have the best and brightest, they are releasing an OS that apart from the most obvious changes amounts to nothing but a silly cartoon on Friday night.

EDIT:

PS: the UI inconsistencies across all levels of Vista are so gregarious that I have to ask myself how it is possible for project managers to sign off on the code their team submitted. It's absolutley insane!

who in the world is Chris Pirillo? lol

Take a look at this:

The window icon is inline with the back button. No front button. The window title is near the back button as well. And look at so much wasted space!!!!!

This is just a example why Vista GUI sux IMHO.

Also take a look at this:

Why did they don't add some window title to explorer. Even if it was not a Path, I would like them to put "Windows Explorer" text on that empy space.

Why Media player has a "tab" like menubar, and Explorer don't?

And I hate that new simbol they are using for Aero. And they are using it everywhere.

Also, why didn't they remove all the menubars for all apps, or make them on everytime on all apps? Why Media player has a "tab" like menubar, and explorer don't?

Yeah, when I was setting up speech recognition, I wanted to redo something, and looked next to the Next button for the Back button, but it wasn't there! I ended up redoing the whole wizard, only later noticing the back button all alone, hiding..

Win95 was more revolutionary UI and OS wise, and they did it in less than five years.

It is kind of sad that the biggest company in the world (not just software) cannot make the greatest UI out there.

Next time, I guess they would be better by outsourcing the UI design to someone else, and not to Microsoft Design team.

BTW, Zune interface is just becoming a disapointment. And OFFICe UI looks like an application for kids.

Why on the Earth do Office Teams and Vista Teams do not communicate? For example, Office team thinks that a TAB UI is better for productivity. But if you look at vista, only Media Player is using that tab approach. So, what is better?

I said it before but here goes. You 10 or 15 whiny little geeks are the minority. You are not the target audience for this OS. You people can't stop crying long enough to realise this I guess. Oh well, what's mommy making for dinner tonight?
