How much faster does FireFox actully run with the FasterFox extention? And what does it actully do to your browser? I don't understand how it makes FireFox faster - What does it do?

Compunctions for going off-topic, I was just roused to find out about this extention.

I've taken so much out of this I felt obliged to toss in my 2 cents

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

Build ID: 2006101023

Enabled Extensions: [31]

* Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.0.4 - Synchronizes Adblock with Filterset.G (in case it isn't obvious: updates adblock and adblock plus

* Adblock Plus 0.7.2.2 - Ads were yesterday! (this has been explained enough)

* Add N Edit Cookies 0.2.1.0 - Cookie Editor that allows you add and edit session and saved cookies

* All-in-One Sidebar 0.7 - Sidebar control with award-winning user experience! (combines many system views and a full page view into a "tabbed" side-bar)

* BugMeNot 1.3 - Bypass compulsory web registration with the context menu via www.bugmenot.com. (extension to pull down and automatically use logins form the popular site)

* Cooliris Previews 2.0 - A simple and powerful way of navigating through Google search results and Google image searches! Cooliris was designed to be an 'intuitive' way of browsing (works on all pages if set in preferences)

* CuteMenus - Crystal SVG 1.7.2 - Adds icons to all menu items.

* DOM Inspector 1.8.1 - Inspects the structure and properties of a window and its contents. (Default)

* Download Statusbar 0.9.4.5 - View and manage downloads from a tidy statusbar (unobtrusive, very customizable, inc. wonderful "speed based" color settings, helpful when watching my servers)

* Extended Statusbar 1.2.5 - A Statusbar with Speed, Percentage, Time and loaded size (like Opera's one) (One drawback: takes up lots of space, can't remove info you don't want)

* Fasterfox 2.0.0 - Performance and network tweaks for Firefox. (As a web admin I, along with probably 99% of others PLEASE don't use "Turbo" mode or, if in custom, don't increase the connection settings past "optimized". Really, we'd prefer you use courteous mode but pipelining isn't the end of the world. I just use it for cache and rendering tweaks)

* fayt 1.0 - Takes back the 'old styled' Find As You Type bar as in Firefox 1.5 (A pet peeve of mine)

* Firefox Extension Backup Extension (FEBE) 4.0 - Firefox Extension Backup Extension (Better than syncing profiles by copying the folder esp. because I have proxy settings on some etc.)

* Firefox Showcase 0.8.0.4 - Easily locate any tab you've opened in Firefox. (Nice extension, unfortunately the extension that used to be required for hotkeys is still not 2.0 read, and I haven't found a JS to use with mouse gestures which I'd prefer anyway)

* FireFTP 0.94.6 - FTP Client for Mozilla Firefox. (Fully integrated, no outside javascript, fully featured FTP client. Even uses firefox's connections settings)

* Forecastfox Enhanced 0.9.3.1 - Get international weather forecasts and radar images and display it in any toolbar or statusbar with this highly customizable extension. (I'm pretty sure the only difference anymore is the big radar view, but I've had enhanced for so long I don't bother switching)

* Google Toolbar for Firefox 2.1.20060807W - Take the power of Google with you anywhere on the Web! (Don't really even know if I still need this, though I do still use it for search and highlight, along with a gmail link and the up one level function)

* Greasemonkey 0.6.6.20061017.0 - A User Script Manager for Firefox (This has only been briefly touched upon, but its absolutely awesome... scripts are used to modify the page as it renders, before I got google toolbar I used one that directed all mailto: links to gmail, I still have one that makes links form plain text urls instead of an extension, one that forces ALL javascript into new tabs, and one that converts UPS/FedEx tracking numbers into links)

* IE Tab 1.2.0.20061113 - Enables you to use the embedded IE engine within Mozilla/Firefox. (Loads a tab using IE for the rendering... allows you to set preferences to automatically force various URLS into it such as windows update. DOES work with IE 7.0 and I recommend it because 7 is a security upgrade)

* Image Toolbar 0.6.4 - Provides easy access to common image functions. (just like IE: in the top corner of the image buttons for print, save, et. al when mouse pauses for a while. You can change what appears in it's prefs)

* Mouse Gestures 1.5.2 - Allows you to execute common commands using mouse gestures. (Sure, I cheat and have a card I've written out and I don't use diagonals. Even when I've dumbed it down for my clumsy self it's very useful because it helps you keep your hand on the mouse all the time and go faster. Allows you to code more actions in simple Java Script. Works great in combinations with hotkeys if you can write the JS to "enter" those keys when you can't the JS for the actual funciton.)

* MR Tech Local Install 5.3.1.1 - Local Install power tools for all users. (en-US) (Sweet beyond all description... spat this out for me w exception to what I've put in parentheses)

* NoScript 1.1.4.5.061030 - Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java (and other plugins) only for trusted domains of your choice (e.g. your home-banking web site). This whitelist based pre-emptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality... Experts will agree: Firefox is really safer with NoScript :-) (Just got this one... I used to think I was safe becuase "no one ever uses scripts" I was wrong, and a lot of them are frivolous anyway.

* Ook? Video Ook! 0.6.2 - [email protected] - Ook? Video Ook! is able to download embedded videos from several web sites. (The first of three extensions I have to help be download embedded content and a greesemonkey script. One of them is bound to work. While you really can't consider using these "legal", please continue to respect the author's creation)

* Splash 1.2.1 - Adds a splash screen. Supported in Firefox, Flock, Thunderbird and Sunbird. (en-US) (just some fun and games... its worth the extra resources just to see "Good browsers are like taking a crap... good ones take time" every time firefox starts. Uses images for a splash which DOES accept transparency, text like what I set, and a progress bar)

* Tab Mix Plus 0.3.5 - Tab browsing with an added boost. (Knocks out 4 old extensions in one fell swoop... if you use tabs its a must have)

* Talkback 2.0 - Sends information about program crashes to Mozilla. (Default)

* Temporary Inbox 1.5.4 - Temporary Inbox (Extension that interfaces with the popular site)

* UnPlug 1.4.5 - UnPlug your Plug-ins, free your Media (Another embedded content downloader)

* Update Notifier 0.1.5.2 - Notifies you when updates are available for your extensions and themes. (Checks for updates for ANYTHING at set intervals and notifies you if you need to restart. Note: I really don't recommend using the check at start of firefox because if, for some reason, you don't have internet firefox will hang a while before it gives up.)

* VideoDownloader 1.1.1 - Download videos from Youtube, Google, Metacafe, iFilm, Dailymotion... and other 60+ video sites ! And all embedded objects on a webpage (movies, mp3s, flash, quicktime, etc).

(Final embedded content downloader)

Sorry the links didn't make it through the copy paste... all extensions are easily googled if you can't find it on Mozilla's ad-on site.

Enabled

Adblock Plus - Ads were yesterday!

BugMeNot - Bypass compulsory web registration with the context menu via www.bugmenot.com

DownThemAll! - The mass downloader for Firefox.

Disabled

VideoDownloader - Download videos from YouTube, Google, Metacafe, iFilm, Dailymotion... and other 60+ video websites! And all embedded objects on a web page (movies, mp3's, Flash, Quicktime, etc.)

I uninstalled previous extensions that I hardly used like IE View Lite and Image Toolbar.

Here's my list of installed extensions. The blue highlights indicate very useful extensions that should be as popular as Adblock, IETab, FlashGot, NoScript - I consider them just as essential to my browsing. The red highlights are extensions that have made Firefox indispensable to me. These are deal breakers - part of the reason I really fell in love with Firefox after swearing by IE for 7 years.

    • Visual Studio finally gets long-awaited feature that developers will love by Usama Jawad Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's popular, lightweight, open-source code editor, it is actually Visual Studio that is the company's flagship integrated development environment (IDE). Although the IDE already offers a boatload of useful features for developers, Microsoft has finally introduced a long-requested capability that will be loved by many. While developers have already been able to create Git pull requests (PRs) directly within Visual Studio for the past couple of years, it had not been possible to review a PR without switching to the browser, until now. Microsoft revealed in December 2025 that it is working on UX that enables developers to do just that, and fast-forward to June 2026, and Visual Studio finally has native capabilities to open and inspect a PR, discuss feedback, and wrap up the review, all without switching to the browser. This integration works for both GitHub and Azure DevOps (including on-prem). Developers have access to multiple surfaces to open a PR, including Git Repository, Git Changes, and the Git menu in Visual Studio. Once you open a PR, all the important details will be immediately visible to you, from where you can navigate to various levels of granularity and branch states, depending on the reviews that you are engaged in. As you would expect, you also get a diff view that enables you to see code changes inline or side-by-side in a separate panel. You can also review commit-by-commit. Additionally, this UX fosters collaboration as you can leave comments, reply to threads, and resolve conversations easily. Naturally, you can also leverage Copilot to apply a code suggestion to fix a potential issue. When you are done, you have the ability to approve, complete, and merge the PR. This is a pretty major feature as it has been requested heavily for the past few years. You can try it out in Visual Studio 2026 version 18.7, made available here recently. Microsoft plans to enhance this experience further in future releases with comment filtering, a timeline of PR activity, and more.

    • Around 68% of developers are now using AI to generate code during development, and some experts are saying that a single developer using AI tools can now do the work of an entire team of 4 to 5 engineers.  According to Figma's State of the Designer 2026 report, 72% of designers now use generative AI in their workflows and 91% say it improves the quality of their work, not just their speed.  But does this mean web developers and designers are becoming less relevant, or are they simply evolving into a different kind of role? Would love to hear from developers and designers here has AI made your job easier, or do you feel threatened by how fast these tools are improving
