Microsoft Starts Banning 360s on LIVE - MS Confirms

Recommended Posts

You really think they'll be satisfied when they find out it can't access live? You can't simply say "Oh you never asked", that would be like selling a car and never mentioning it can't get into 5th gear. Expect to be reported, and who knows maybe banned again :p

Step 1: MS bans modified consoles

2a: Hackers sell their banned console on ebay/return it to a retailer, buys a new LIVE-compatible console - some days later, go to step 1

2b: Hackers get angry and find other exploits and run unsigned code, and eventually run homebrew

Either way, I think the hackers win. They can get serious about this stuff :pinch:

Yup. I couldn't have put it better myself.

MS gets screwed ether way. Now they'll have a bunch of banned consoles getting returned or exchanged to big box stores.

Do you really think the 16-year-old pimpled face kid working at Wal-Mart is going to give a crap if the serials don't match up? 99/100 times they don't even check.

No but the door greeters will pwn you

New firmware on the way people!!! lmao ... this time it will let you play live again but will only work with non-banned or new consoles, so for you banned guys ... unlucky ;) for you yet non-banned guys theres light at the end of the tunnel and for us non pirates ... well MEH!

The hackers/modders have already won since they can't stop us from playing "backups" and they never will, they are only stopping us from getting on Xbox Live...

Why can't they stop you playing backups?

Its obvious they have some way of seeing if you have modded your console of not, so there's no reason why the can't do something to stop the console playing games full stop (apart from the obvious bitch fits that would happen online)

Just disconnect the Ethernet cable and they will never be able to stop you from playing backups :p

they could put the update on future game discs and have it that the update has to run before the game can run, then you'd be limited to playing only older games

They could of done that this week and didn't so that tells me they can't...

Honestly, MS isn't too smart.

Think about it;

They stopped us from accessing XBOX Live, their Marketplace.

So now I don't need to fork out $50/year for Gold, I don't need to buy any XBLA games, and no HD movies (dosen't apply to me, I'm in Canada).

It only ****s them up due to people like laz (i still love you) who are penis's and return their banned 360s to Best Buy.

Once again, more money lost on MS's part due to "defective" (banned) units.

I know a perfect solution to stop hacking/modding. Don't make a console.

No Xbox 3, then no people to mod/hack your new console. Simple.

The fools who modded are most likely Microsoft's least profitable customers. I guarantee that the hit they're taking is quite minimal.

Actually I bought 3 XBLA games, along with retail games too. I would of loved to rent HD movies, but they don't have that in Canada. I also have 800ms points left on my gamertag.

So as you can see, your statement is foolish.

I didn't say that everyone who modded bought nothing. You can't disprove my hypothesis with an anecdote.

I proved you wrong, you made a foolish biased statement.

How did you prove me wrong? I said "most likely" not "all". The fact that you bought stuff proves absolutely nothing besides the fact that some modders bought things. Which isn't a fact I contested.

They can't stop you from playing it because if they bricked your console, they'd be breaking your property. They also can't stop drives from reading backups because they (MS) can only flash Hitachi drives remotely through Xbox Live - and even if so - the modded firmware disallows remote flashing.

Edit: Didn't read your post correctly :pinch: Either way, another flash would probably circumvent that method too. (Update through disc)

Hackers win I tell you. \o/, haha just kidding. I'm just saying that I don't think banning a bunch of people (even if it's only like 10K people) was a smart thing to do.

I highly doubt MS would EVER attempt to flash drives through XBL updates due to it being a highly sensitive process and could result in a lot of bricked drives.

Modifying your console breaks the ToS agreement that you accepted when signing up for Live. Therefore the only thing MS can do is kill your Xbox Live service.

they could put the update on future game discs and have it that the update has to run before the game can run, then you'd be limited to playing only older games

Exactly, I'm pretty sure they did this with the original Xbox. Even the PSP does it.

So even if I bought the game legally I couldn't play it because my console was banned...... That would be soooo stupid for them to do this.......

What? No, the idea is that there will be a firmware update on new games so that all of your "backups" won't play anymore. So no, you're not getting banned from playing the games you legally purchased, you're getting banned from playing the games you didn't purchase. It makes sense and I certainly hope it happens to all of you.

    • Microsoft updates Visual Studio Code with chat cost tracking and multi-agent chats by Paul Hill Microsoft has just launched Visual Studio Code 1.126, its latest weekly release. This time, the company has focused on letting you see the total cost of chat sessions to spot expensive conversations; enabling multiple chats per session that run side-by-side in one agent host Copilot session; and letting you browse new folders safely in restricted mode. We have now reached the stage where free AI in IDEs is coming to an end. To help you keep track of your costs, VS Code now lets you see the entire cost of a chat session, rather than just individual turns. This should give you more transparency about which sessions consume the most credits, so you can better manage your usage over time and spend less. For those of you using the Agents window, you know it is possible to run and manage multiple agent sessions at once. In this update, a Copilot session started from an agent host can hold several chats at once. Explaining how this feature works, Microsoft writes: Finally, from this update forward, Microsoft will remove the pop-up when opening an untrusted folder. When you open a new folder now, it will automatically open in Restricted Mode. You will see a banner that lets you manage the trust level of the folder. Microsoft has made this change so that it’s easier to start inspecting code without giving it trust right away. If you have VS Code, you can check for updates within the app now to get this new version. Otherwise, you can download it from the Visual Studio Code website.
    • Anthropic accuses Alibaba of using 25,000 fake accounts to copy Claude's capabilities by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic has accused Alibaba of using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts to extract capabilities from Claude on a huge scale. According to a report from Reuters, Anthropic told US lawmakers that operators linked to Alibaba and the company’s Qwen AI team generated 28.8 million exchanges with Claude between April 22 and June 5, 2026. That is a lot of Claude conversations, but Anthropic says this was not ordinary chatbot use. The company believes the accounts were part of a coordinated effort to collect answers that could help train or improve rival AI systems. The alleged campaign reportedly focused on some of Claude’s most valuable skills, including software development, multi-step reasoning, and agentic tasks. In practical terms, that means getting an AI model to plan and complete work across several stages rather than simply answering a single question. This is called 'distillation,' where AI companies use outputs from a larger model to train a smaller and cheaper one. The smaller model learns to imitate useful parts of the more capable system without needing the same amount of computing power. The distillation process isn't automatically suspicious, but the problem comes when one company gathers another provider's outputs without permission and at an industrial scale. Also, this does not mean Alibaba obtained Claude’s source code, model weights, or original training data. Instead, Anthropic claims the accounts repeatedly asked Claude carefully designed questions and collected the answers. Those answers could then be used as training material for another model. Anthropic has made similar accusations against DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax earlier this year. As Neowin previously reported, Anthropic said those three companies collectively generated more than 16 million Claude exchanges through roughly 24,000 accounts. Anthropic says the new campaign produced almost twice as many exchanges in a matter of weeks. Anthropic reportedly told lawmakers that the campaign could help Chinese AI developers approach the capabilities of its Mythos Preview model. Mythos is focused on advanced cybersecurity work, including finding and exploiting complex software vulnerabilities. via Reuters | Photo via DepositPhotos.com
