I've just switched to Vista Ultimate so my desk is pretty bare at the moment. Give me a little time to make it as similar to my XP desk but for now, here it is:

Go to Rename the icon, empty the name, and type ALT + 0160. Bingo, a space which counts as a character ;)

Note that if you want to do it to more than one icon you'll need to use a different number of 'magic' spaces for each, which can be easily solved by copying + pasting.
