Corporation president dismisses rumours

Sony Corp. has put an end to rumours that a PlayStation 3 price drop is imminent, with president Ryoji Chubachi stating that there are "no immediate plans" to introduce a cut.

The rumours emerged following an advertisement from US retailer Circuit City which indicated that SCEA was to cut USD 100 off the price of the console. An official announcement was expected next week at the E3 Media and Business Summit.

But according to Bloomberg, Chubachi has said there are "no immediate plans as of now" to reduce the price.

He added that any decisions regarding the price point of PlayStation 3 "is a matter" for the gaming arm of the business, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

Chubachi also said that Sony Corp. is looking likely to meet its operating margin target of 5 per cent for the year ending March 2008.

Well it's too bad that there's a Price Break in the Circuit City ad for the week of 7/15. Price Breaks are permanent, and I'm sure that Circuit City wouldn't be alone. I have confirmed this information as well, as I have a friend that works at the local Circuit City and she checked for me while she was working last night.

Assuming Sony are just denying the price cut to try to prevent sales dropping at the moment (which is more than likely, all compnies keep their price drops a secret until the last possible second), this will be a big indication of how well the PS3 is going to shape up in the long run.

And this is what will happen.

There'll be the usual spur in sales that all price drops get, so for the first week or two there'll be a lot of FUD going around about the PS3's sales "rising by 200%!" or something like that, fanboys the world over will start arguing about the validity of various articles, Sony themselves will more than happily twist the figures around to make it seem like the PS3 is now the number 1 best selling thing out there (and for those couple of weeks, it might just be and even if it's not, who can blame them for marketing their own product? Anyhoo...).

After the first couple of weeks, the real data will start to come in as the dust settles. If nobody's buying the PS3 purely because it's too expensive, then sales should keep up fairly well, perhaps not as much as the 360 or the Wii, but definitely more than they are now and indicate that the PS3 can fight back down the line once it's price begins to match it's rivals.

However, if the PS3 is doing poorly because people have decided to spend their money on a 360/Wii or whatever, then sales will settle down to around what they are now and be a good indication that it's going to end up in 3rd place this time around.

ok heres the deal...

i just bought my PS3 last week. however it was at my cousins house, since i told him to pick it up from the store for me since he was closer and i didnt have the time to go get it.

i actually purchased it from Circuit City last week in their promotion- Free Sony SixAxis Controller with purchase of a PS3

i paid around $642 for it (incl sales tax)

now...its NOT opened and i have all the receipts and everything.

it was purchased on jun30.....and the 5 FREE BLURAY offer requires your purchased it on July1 or afterward.

if i return the console and get a gift card...and then repurchase it when the deal comes out...i might lose my current deal (free controller) if the deal proves to be false or if they decide to cancel it.

i dont no what to do...i dont want to wait 2 weeks for the price drop...plus CC said they would pay me the difference if the price decides to drop within the next 30 days.

i am in desperate need of advice and anyone that could help me, i would seriously appreciate it

thanks alot

If it does drop, it will drop around the holidays, I believe. So that 30-day thing may very well be null and void. If you can't wait, just enjoy it while you can, you'd only be saving around $50 since you got another controller with it anyway... not worth it IMO.

Seriously guys, it is for sure in the Circuit City ad for the week of 7/15; I've got it confirmed by a friend. Hell, I'd drive over there and look at it myself if it wasn't so damn hot right now.

Sony's just saying "no" because they wanted to break the story themselves at E3.

Bring it back and wait for a price drop. There's really nothing at all worth playing on it right now anyway. Like even if this all turns out to be false and there is no price drop, you're not going to be missing much anyway. There will be a price drop eventually, if not now, then by next year. Hopefully there will be some games worth playing by then too.

Here's the thing, if you purchased it from Circuit City, you have a 30-day price match guarantee... So if anywhere, including Circuit City, drops the price at all, you can take your receipt in and get a refund of the difference. I have gotten this PS3 price drop info confirmed by a friend working at my local Circuit City, so it will happen at least by the week of July 15th. You'll get your $100 off even if you wait.

^ true...but would they give it to me ONTOP of the already free controller i snagged??? and do they refund you the money in cash if you charged from a credit card? as i used someone elses credit card but paid them the amount. plus i wouldnt get the free bluray movies right...?

I couldn't tell ya... I worked there 2+ years and I don't even know the answers

Your best bet would simply be to either call them up or go back in and ask them. Tell them you heard there could be a price drop in a couple weeks and you were wondering if you'd be eligible for the price guarantee with those other special offers you got.

On a side note, the Beavercreek store mentioned is about 3 blocks from my apartment. I know where I'm going later.

edit: Nevermind, the "Beavercreek" store is farther north than the one by me.

And it's too nice to be inside setting up a PS3.

Here in Canadian retail stores, the PS3 was $659 when it came out, and then a few weeks later it sold for $699. After a month or two it starting selling at $699 with a game, and now were seeing it sell just by itself for $659 (again). There's your price drop! :p

Hopefully it does really drop to $499, which still means $550ish for us Canadians, but it's better than $659.

    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
