BREAKING: $100 PS3 Price Drop

Recommended Posts

Sony are thinking with their heads and not their asses for the first time in 10 years!

its a small move on their part but it will surely cause a huge impact

for the first time their big corporate name isnt getting them anywhere. Sony used to be a name that meant a product that will last for generations to come. now its just pure fashion statement.

their huge drop in market scared the **** out of them and hopefully knocked some sense into them.

thanks for listening sony!

Although a $100 lower in cost, it still too high for most cosumers. Personally I think they will see a small increase in sales for now and then when the games come out, with the $499 price tag, Sony will infact move some consoles. Hopefully it's enough.

I guess we can expect an Elite price drop then, as it'll be way too close to the 60GB PS3 price. Hurray for competition!

Maybe we'll see the Core drop completely and the Premium and Elite both drop down the price tier... :shifty:

Do you even realize the amount of games and accessories each buyer well need to buy to just make the console not a loss for Sony ? on the other hand this si somethign they have to do to evn get the consoles they have made and ###### on the shelves sold.

But there won't be any games to buy if developers **** all over Sony for lagging behind in the so-called "console wars".

And how did you get "######" past the censors here?

edit: and how did I?

Maybe we'll see the Core drop completely and the Premium and Elite both drop down the price tier... :shifty:

Here's hoping. Premium at $299 would be great. It looks like Sony will be announcing the price drop at E3.

Sony is allready losing 300 $ on each console sold. with a 100$ price drop, they'll be subsdizing nearly half the rpice of the PS3. and loosing a ridiculous amount.

No they aren't. They were losing a bit over $200 at launch. With the removal of the EE, Cell moving to 65nm, and the plummeting cost of blue diodes, as well as the reduction in price of the other parts, PS3 is getting close to the $600 mark for each console. In Europe, they maybe even making a bit of a profit or breaking even due to the much higher price.

Which is something a few of us mentioned a while ago. Because of the new technology, the price of manufacturing would drop much faster than that of a console using a $30 DVD player.

Are you kidding? Both MS and Nintendo can drop the price of their consoles at the drop of a hat with no problem doing so. They don't need to when there hasn't been any competitive pricing going on until now.

I know especially from past interviews on Major Nelson's show that MS went about the 360 with a long term price technique and know exactly what they are doing, e.g the core version which can be dropped in price very easily.

No, I think what they're saying is with an emerging technology, the actual cost of materials drops much faster than that of an older technology. That being true, Sony will be able to drop the price of the PS3 faster and still have the same (negative) margin they've had.

Don't really agree with that, but it could be true. The price drop will be greater yes, but dvd drives are cheap as dirt these days. It really wouldn't take much effort to cut costs, especially with two new formats coming into play, the older ones drop price very quick.

That is also true, but I would guess that the price drops at an inverse exponential rate, thus the newer technology materials dropping faster than the older to begin with. We'll never know for sure, but it makes sense to me :p

End of the day consumer wins really. Wonder when the price drop will go International.. :/

Exactly my thoughts.

This drop alone will only show a small spike in sales. It's going to need more games that can't be found elsewhere (and that are actually worth excitement) to get anything that lasts.

    • On xiaomi hyperos there's also an option to disable google assistant. I've got everything disabled. Only thing I do have installed is a web wrapped for duck.ai which claims to let you use various AIs anonymously
    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
    • Looks like no official TBW rating, which should be a required listing in my opinion for sites like Amazon (hell, put it on the box too.)
