BREAKING: $100 PS3 Price Drop

Recommended Posts

Unless the 80GB Model comes with ShockAxis, it's pretty pointless to debut an 80GB version for that price tag since you can just use your own HDD in the PS3. But even then, it would probably just be cheaper to buy a separate ShockAxis controller with the 60GB model and save yourself $50 or so.... I guess that's why they're bundling that game with it, eh?

wth is up with this...i landed 600+ for a console and i cant even open it. its sitting there staring at me. its mocking me. it knows i cant resist the temptation to open it. and as soon as i do open it, its gonna radio home to Sony so they will discontinue the 60gb all together.

do u guys think i should get the 80GB instead? since i already spent 600 on the 60gb, but am getting 100 back next week with the price guarantee.

Do you really think 20Gb will make that much of a difference? I say open it, enjoy it and further down the line you can buy a bigger laptop HDD and replace it.

This isn't a permanent price drop. It's only until the 60 gigs are sold out. They will discontinue them in August. So by say about Christmas time, they will all be sold out and all that will be left is the 80 gig $600 model. Sony is clueless. Why not just keep the 60 gig SKU @ $499? An extra 20 gigs ins't that big a deal. Why doesn't Sony get that $600 is too much for the average consumer?

huh??? You work at Sony???

Its an extra 20GB and a game(Motorstorm). I think Sony is going to keep the 60GB. Doesn't make any sense to keep only a 80GB+game in the market.

Where in the article or any article on the internet says that they are not going to sell the 60 GB??? it says that the new 80GB will be available on August not that they are going to stop selling the other one. The neowin user was the one that posted that.

Yep, the price drop is official. 60GB is now selling for $549 CAD. Good news for prospect buyers like myself. :D

I think Sony is smart if they keep a 60GB model and a 80GB model, that way possible buyers have a choice of whether they want to pay more for more space, or pay less for less space. I'm pretty certain that that the 80GB model will come bundled with the new (ShockAxis) controller/. Alot of us don't really need the extra 20GB so I would rather spend that $100 on a warranty or something. Besides you could probably just as easily upgrade the 60GB HD to anything you want.

Great news for us prospect buyers! ;)

The 80GB version is guarenteed to have the European motherboard without hardware backwards compatibility. So your 60GB model may actually be more desirable if it still uses the original US hardware. So I would say the 80 shouldn't tempt you at all if that's the case.

PS3 price drop causes a 2800% jump in sales at Amazon.com

It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.

While it's hard to judge the success of the price cut in only one day, it's interesting to see how many people are snapping up the new $499 PS3. A price cut of $100 is not insignificant but the PS3 is still the most expensive console, and industry watchers were curious to see just how many people would be moved to purchase the console after a 'mere' 17% price drop.

Judging from the early evidence though, the answer is 'a lot.'

These guys made the same mistake the xbox news guys made:

The increase on Amazon was NOT a sales increase, but rather a rank increase. The PS3 jumped from being ranked 28th on Amazon to being ranked #2, which is a 2,700% increase in sales rank, not in sales itself.

Ah. Well TBH?I?didn't?read?all?of?the?article.?I?was?going?by?what?people?were?saying?in?the?thread?

(the?OP?wasn't?the?only?one?who?mentioned?it).?If?that's?the?case?then?this?makes?more?sense.?If?

the?price?drop?was?only?on?the?60?gig?and?for?a?limited?time,?that?would?be?just?retarded (I think we can

at least agree on that?).

$500? That is ?250 when converted.

The same console is ?400 her:(:( I don't even know if you get the free blu-ray movies.

I doubt you will, we are just being mugged off again, our hardware prices when converted into USD are ridiculously over there prices.

Same blogging network, so that same mistake is expected. :)

    • If you don't care to read what I said, then you prove my point. Maybe written media is beyond your attention span. Titles are not summaries my friend.
    • Nobody asked... in fact, I said "I don't care about political leanings"
    • TLDR. Here is a far better title (just a basic example): Windows 11 26H2 to allow disabling Web search results
    • Restore will get my vote, only if to see if things are any different, doubt it though but Labour and Conservatives too out of touch and same thing over and over and over…, Lib Dem who?
    • There is nothing wrong with this title. You have completely missed the plot when it comes to "clickbait." The issue was never that a title tries to entice you to click, that is how titles have worked for over 100 years. The issue is when the title subverts expectations, getting you to click expecting something that isn't there. The classic clickbait example is "Boyfriend caught cheating, what happens next will shock you," then what happened next is the girlfriend was upset...which is probably the least shocking outcome imaginable. If sounds like what you want is for the titles to be a collection of 10-word summaries that you can skim, get the just of the story, and only click if you want more details. That is not, never has been, and never will be what titles are. You can go all the way back to print newspapers during the great depression and see the same thing. The newspaper was locked in a vending machine, all you can see is the headline, you choose to put in 5¢ to buy the paper and read the rest if you want. Those headlines were written in a way to sell the paper, not just to provide a summery. Here are two actual headlines from that time, "Wall Street Lays an Egg," or "Stocks Hit Bottom?" Maybe you'd say something like "it was wrong then and it's still wrong now." Okay, fine opinion to have, but it isn't like Neowin is doing something unjurnalistic, they are just following the age-old standards for written media.
