No it isn't. 007 is the callsign/codename.  James Bond is his NAME, and his general appearance has been described many times by the man who created the character.

007 is a reference, James Bond has been taken by many people to assume a codename - every since George Lazenby, the first replacement Bond, said "This never happened to the other fellow" in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.  It cleans up some massive holes, not least of which why would an International spy keep giving his real name?

That reference is well known to be a tongue in cheek breaking of the 4th wall and nothing more.  Also, the books are the only true canon source for Bond, not the movies.

I quite liked the, now fake rumour, that Idris Elba was running for Bond, but hey.

 

I've found myself feeling excited for the new Doctor, last time I looked forward to an episode of Doctor Who was the second part of the one with the weeping angels

Explain SkyFall then... he goes back to where he grew up and it says Bond on the mail box.  They just reboot the series each recasting me thinks.

The Movies aren't loyal to the original books, yes as it happened his parent's were called Bond, but it was also the given spy name 'James Bond' 

Besides after Cubby's passing, the movies took a nose dive to some of the the Bond fans.

I for one hated Pierce Brosnan at first, as GoldenEye (incidentally, also the name of Cubby's Jamaica home, I think) he couldn't hold an English accent to save his life, 'access codes, nukular as opposed to nuclear, etc...) but he redeemed himself in The World Is Not Enough, mostly because of the Nod to, On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Fair comment, and it's a strong argument.  But for every argument either way, there is a counter the other way.  Like I said, it's something a lot of people believe.

I'm on his side on this one bud, the novel is as 'direct from the thinker' as possible, and sets the bar. 

The movies always stray, Ok Dr. No didn't have the budget to do the book justice, but Goldfinger (was so tempted to say GoldMember) and Thunderball were the films that set the bar for the movies, a bar they still follow today.

Of course the movies stray, and have become a MASSIVE franchise that absolutely eclipse the (not amazing) books.  They may be the "original" but with a juggernaut like Bond, it hardly makes them in any way more important or "correct".

It comes down to the lore in the end, any remake can stray from and eclipse it's origins, but then it becomes an entity by itself, but by that time it is just that, a separate entity, and no longer deserves the recognition given to it by it's creator.

Like the Cadbury's Boost you can buy today, everyone has all but forgotten the best one they made, the Coconut Boost, (IMHO)

Well, I just bailed out of one of the Doctor Who groups on Facebook. The admin spent a full day taking potshots at anyone who isn't totally thrilled with Jodie. Like that's going to change anyone's mind.

 

I may just have to take a break from the fandom entirely until her debut (so I can make an informed decision on whether this casting was a good idea) if the Whovian community is going to go full Civil War.

I'm just confused as to how people would want to argue at watching an old white man instead of a rather attractive, young lady. If I'm staring at my scifi I'd also rather look at someone more visually engaging.

Because I grew up with the Doctor as a paternal/crazy uncle/mentor figure and I honestly prefer him as such. I didn't even like Matt Smith in the role because he was too young and portrayed the Doctor as too immature for my taste. 

 

Personally, I'd have been happier if they'd cast an older woman - a badass granny to echo Hartnell's badass grandpa. Or even just someone in her late 30s to early 40s - a maternal/crazy aunt character. Jodie just seems more of a companion type than a Doctor to me.

+1 but the need to cast a woman is the only way to completely break of the Moffatverse!

Moffat wanted to cast a woman?

 

Well for any new showrunner any possible relations to the moffatverse will be hard and probably ignored river song, badwolf, impossible girls. Whereas had the lead remained male, the possibility was open and  thus retaining moffatverse story arcs.

He may not have actually done the casting himself, but he pushed non-stop for it - references to gender changing in regeneration only began when he took the helm. Missy was the next big step, and I'm certain he had a hand in casting Jodie. 

 

This isn't wiping the slate clean of Moffatt - it's what he was working for the entire time. 

 

But why do you think Moffatt's influence can't continue just because there's a woman in the role? (Especially since that's the ultimate expression of the Moffatt Masterplan IMO!)
