Neowin's Top Hosts

Question

I've created this sticky thread for members to post their hosts that they use for their website. Clearly, we arent really looking here for the free hosts- geocities, lycos etc - rather the ones you pay for. We want to know about your good and bad expierences, how reliable they have been, how flexable on bandwidth, and overall feature wise. Do it in this format :

host name :

Notable Features :

Pros:

Problems:

Overall:

Link:

So - i'll start of for my website Zeebit :)

host name : OLM

Notable Features : PHP /Mysql, lots of free cgi scripts, PuTTY access, Password protect directories, FTP access

Pros: Excellent tech support- like 5 min replies - and useful ones at that, gives basic stats, Always fast and i've never had the website down - good VFM in general.

Problems: Only 1 FTP account on my setup, No PHPMyAdmin for DB stuff, Have a few probs everynow and again accessing the control panel - which is fairly limited if i'm honest- i'd prefer Cpanel - but for the price- its ok.

Overall: Mainly good- but a few downsides.

Link: http://www.olm.net

I will edit this thread to keep it clean and to the point :)

Host Name: HostThru

Features: I'm on the Silver plan now. For $2.99/month or $35.88/year you get: 250MB space, 10GB transfer, 24/7 FTP, Frontpage extensions, Plesk Control Panel, Unlimited POP3/SMTP accounts, unlimited e-mail autoresponders, forwarders, and aliases, Horde webmail, PHP4, MySQL, phpMyAdmin pre-installed, SSL Server, and password protected directories.

Pros: Cheapest I've seen for the amount of stuff you get.

Cons: Not terribly fast, in 1.5 years, I've had 3 periods of downtime - one which lasted for about 12 hours - response from them was something about the MySQL server getting b0rked somehow, support only available through email and response times are generally measured in days (if at all lately).

Overall: 6/10

Name: Hostphax

Order Link: Contact [email protected] or [email protected] on MSN or JBTheHockeyGod on AIM

Notable Features: CPanel and all the normal goodies. Fantistico coming soon. SQL, POP3, Subdomains, etc... etc... a huge list full.

Pros: Cheap and fast. The prices are amazing. The staff is incredibly quick. The services are reliable. Overall, just a great host.

Cons: Can't think of any. They take care of you, and if you find a con, you let them know, and they actually try to fix it.

Overall: This is the host for you. THese guys want to take care of you. They want you to feel comfortable, while not paying a huge price.

They were once xAviaHosting, with just Josh as the owner. Now after some health problems they're back public as HostPhax, with 3 people running the show to make things even faster, and better.

Their site is under construction right now while they get everything back public, but they're support is online, and their forums are back available. I give them a 10/10 try them out!

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
