PS3 misconceptions and spin

Recommended Posts

I just love the fact that the Sony camp always likes to point out the failure rate and then fails to point out the fact that despite how high it is, the 360 still manages, month by month, to sell at least twice as many units than it's competitor that is apparently so much better because it doesn't hardly have a failure rate. I think that says a lot.

Also, I dunno about anyone else, but relative to before Microsoft said they fixed the problems, I've hardly heard anything about 360's failing (also not including those manufactured before Microsoft fixed the problems). Yet the old news failure rate is still needlessly brought up.

Maybe if Sony hired Nick Naylor, they'd do a better job selling consoles :p

Here's the thing. Last generation I bought a Gamecube. It wasn't my only gaming machine, but I wanted it because there were some games that were Gamecube exclusive. I knew from the get go that it was the lower end of the 3 "last gen" systems but that's why it was also the cheapest.

My Gamecube ran circles around my PS2, look at how crappy RE:4 was for PS2, and it easily held its own against the Xbox so I don't know what your talking about. :/

In general terms the Gamecube was considered the weakest of the 3 consoles, but I agree with you. There were some games that were great looking. Which even strengthens the parallels between the Gamecube and the PS3. I'm sure there will be some games that will look good, as is pointed out by the original article. It's just going to take a lot more work from those 1st party titles. The big difference is that the Gamecube was comparatively cheap, while you're paying much more for the PS3.

Yeah but technically the Xbox 1 had better graphics than the PS2 yet look how that turned out.

it opened the Door for the 360 and proved that Microsoft was serius about this and did know what they where doing witht he whole console business.

The PS2 wasn't Sony's first console - they were backed by years of the PS1 doing well and having a huge fanbase shared only by Nintendo. I'd say the Xbox did pretty well considering it was completely new to the market and a lot of people thought it was going to die off quickly.

for a first console, the xbox did a great job for the limited amount of time it had under its wing. You could also say though, that it only really failed to because once MS started work on the 360, they basically dumped the xbox.

Only reason sony hasent killed the ps2 off is because its the only way they can make money. Im still waiting for this "10 years of life" they say all their consoles get. Anyone see the ps2 lasting another 3 years???????????????? anyone see the ps3 lasting until 2016???? sony just spits out random bs lines. they aim at fanboys who dont know much about electronics, hoping that they will pure all their money into their "wonder console". No product i have ever had of sony's ever worked well for more than about a year. And sony has never once admitted to any faults on anything. When ur ps3 dies, prepare to pay for a repair or buy a new console.

In the end to each his own. Games like

God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy VS XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM: Confrontation

are all games that are must owns for me.

I have a 360 to play online with my friends because thats what most of them have and obviously Xbox Live beats Playstation Network (besides price, I like free online).

So really I'll use my 360 more for online and my PS3 more for single player. If I had to own just one it would be PS3. A lot of peoples choice would be different but thats my choice.

Xbox did die off quickly... It came out after PS2 and died long ago while PS2 is now just starting to stop selling...

Yeah PS2 and support from PS1 fans but look how well PS1 did in the market where Nintendo was on top.

Funny you should mention that. It's widely regarded that Nintendo lost to Sony because they failed to give the market what they wanted. They decided to stick with cartridges on the N64 because they were hard to copy, even though they held much less space. This after having 2 wildly successful consoles. They got beat by a newcomer. Hmmmm... parallels, anyone?

Actually while the amount of games may lessen over the next 3 years, I definitely see the Playstation 2 being produced by Sony for the next 3 years. Just because a company isn't going to back it all the way, it doesn't mean it isn't supporting it for 10 years, it just means their resources are also going to other areas.

However one "console" I don't see lasting 10 years is the PSP. It's a fantastic console and they might of got somewhere if those UMD drives started to come out standalone, but alas not.

...

I meant nobody thought it would even take off, much less create a fanbase for their next console that would propel it to do better than Sony's next console.

The thing that bugs me most is everyone thinks "Oh the PS3 isn't selling it really needs some sales" or "oh the PS3 is failing!" it's not doing nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be.... Playstation 3 sales so far are similar to Xbox 360 sales in it's first year. Sure Xbox 360 sales are more then double Playstation 3s but Xbox 360 has been out for more then twice as long.

yes Xbox 360 has more high rated games, and yes multiplatform games look better on Xbox360.

I've heard many people say "Playstation 3 doesn't have one good game". Sure it might not have any games yet that make the System and game a must own but there are plenty good games that I and others definitely enjoy playing.

There are exclusives coming to it that make the system a must own for me and others.

Did anyone really expect the system to sell like hot cakes with the original price tag? A few Sony employees did but they must be crazy.

With the new price on Playstation 3 it's starting to sell pretty good numbers showing that people are like me and want some of the PS3 exclusives coming in 2008.

All I can say is when I look at Oblivion and Heavenly Sword, all I can say is wow.

It may be harder from a dev's point of view but great looking games that are on par with the xbox360 can be done.

on par? Oblivion looked and ran better on Playstation 3 ;)

Wow. This thread needs to be cleaned.

On topic, I don't own either console, so my conclusion on which is the better console is not influenced in any way by a purchase of one or more of the consoles. With that said, looking at both sides, it would seem that the 360 is miles ahead of the PS3 - in both hardware for gaming (the PS3 makes an excellent F@H machine but a poor gaming machine), online content, game quantity/quality, developer ease-of-use, portability to the PC, and cost.

I realize it may be hard for hardcore PS3 fans to look at their favored console from another perspective, but imagine yourself as a developer, looking to see which platform on which to develop your games. On the one side, you have an incredibly easy-to-learn SDK that also compiles for the PC, a proven architecture based on a traditional platform, and the largest next-gen user base. On the other side, you have a completely different platform, a hard and convoluted SDK, requires hacks and workarounds to get around the memory/processor limitations, requires game assets to be strategically placed in multiple places on the Blu-Ray disc in order to achieve decent loading times, and has the lowest user base. Which console are you going to develop for?

I have a question for people who know more about this.

Lets forget about how hard it is to develop for and how much money it takes to develop for the ps3.

Lets say you have all the time and money, will the ps3 have better graphics?

In other words does it have the capability or potential to have better graphics then the 360?

I'm considering buying one and I'm not concerned with whether the majority of games look better

on the 360, all I want to know is that a few of the ps3 games are gonna look really good, atleats equal to or better

to xbox 360 games.

It may not have any great titles, but many of the titles are average or worse at best. All these exclusives you speak of, your hope is on them, since we have no way of knowing just how good the games will be. FF only sells copies anymore because it has the name of FF. That franchise has been slowly dying off. Killzone 2 looks to have some pretty bland environments (in a color aspect) as well as weak AI (the guy ran past 5 enemies without taking one shot in the demo) and even boss battles, an ancient and overdone feature of the FPS genre. MGS is just really an upgrade in graphics, with little new features. The only thing I cannot bag on is the storylines of these games, since they are not released yet.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest recommended games I have heard of that is coming to the PS3 (folklore) isn't even exclusive. The PS3 needs something, and everyone has been saying for over a year, "Just wait till the new hit titles get here, and then it will pick up". Well, more and more hit titles release and flop on us, so I hope these next big hitters don't follow the same pattern.

on par? Oblivion looked and ran better on Playstation 3 ;)

And taking up more than twice as much space to increase loading times. Congrats Sony ;)

No, that is what this the original article was about. Even though it has more physical hardware, it just cannot utilize it all effectively. The way the hardware works actually bottlenecks its power, giving it even less power than the 360.

Technically the PS3 has better graphics than the xbox 360.........

You can say "technically", "in theory" or "on paper" at this point in time xbox360 graphics are still better, even for multiplatformers. But you got to take this into consideration, devs have had longer to play with the 360 than the PS3 so obviously they can probably tap more into the 360s power and graphical capabilities, also the games on the 360 now are like 2nd maybe 3rd generation games, even by saying that though, gears of war was a 1st/2nd generation game and that was graphically lush, so im not taking any credit away from the 360. PS3 at the moment is still on its first generation of titles, give it more time and maybe if devving was made easier for PS3 then you would see the same if not better graphically lush games on PS3.

    • Microsoft admits one of the most crucial Outlook features is currently broken by Sayan Sen Microsoft is making some decent progress when it comes to Windows 11. Recently we have confirmed reports of some rather useful improvements landing in the next version of the OS, 26H2, wherein GPU driver TDR crashes may finally be fixed, plus the company is also allowing users to disable web content on the Search. On the Outlook front though things have not been so rosy. Last month in May we reported several problems affecting basic functionalities on the app. These included a problem where documents would open blank or corrupt themselves. Following that, Quick Steps, a very useful feature, would no longer work correctly, and finally, Microsoft acknowledged a problem wherein images would fail to load up properly inside the email. Microsoft had resolved those bugs later and almost exactly a month after we reported on them, the company has now admitted a new similarly basic issue, this time on Macs. Users recently started noticing that Outlook would no longer display email threads properly as the original message itself was not displayed. An affected user Tsoumpas, C (ngmb) nicely described the problem in a forum post they made on Microsoft's site. They wrote: "Description of the issue: After updating Outlook for Mac [Version 16.110 (26061317)] on 18/6/2026, replying to any email no longer includes the original message in the reply window. Prior to the update, replies correctly contained the original email text below my response. Expected behavior: The original message should be included in the reply, as in previous Outlook versions and according to the configured reply settings. Actual behavior: The reply window contains only a blank composition area (or only my response), with none of the original email text included." Obviously this must be a highly frustrating for users as noted by several in that thread. The post, at the time of writing, has also been upvoted by more than 40 users indicating that is a fairly widespread bug. Thankfully Microsoft seems to have acknowledged the problem right around that time as it opened a new issue on its official website. In the support article, the company recommends switching to Outlook for Mac from the legacy app, where the problem appears to be happening.
