PS3 misconceptions and spin

Media streaming was not supported at first in the PS3, feature was added in one of the 1.5x firmware's I think (there currently on 1.9x).

Instruction for WMP 11 and streaming found here -

The nice thing about eh PS3 is the firmware updates have added a lot of various nice features and functionality after it's release.

I may be mistaken since I use Vista (which has MCE) but can't you just go to Music or Movies on the 360 without starting the Media Center and stream the media from a PC? Maybe you need Windows Media Player?

Yup but ... only WMV videos and some MP4 work and MP3 obivously work. Thought about updating to Vista Ultimate but id rather wait till SP1 is out the door before i do. Been using WMP and TVersity on the 360 as TVersity does not run very well. (not as well as it does on the PS3). PS3 can even stram from WMP, it shows up on the XMB.

With Transcoding (a program that converts one video format to another on demand) you can stream a lot to the PS3. I got Nero Express 6 with my dvd drive. It came with Nero Digtial Express.

Here a guide with Nero 7, but Nero 6 works just as well.

Nero 6 IMHO is better becuase you just Media home, no Nero Scout or indexing, etc to worry about.

This is what I use for video streaming to the ps3 and it works rather well.

(Edit) I also have UPNP disabled on my router and the ps3 picked it up the pc very quickly.

Both the ps3 and the 360 can stream from any UPnP devicesoftware, wich ncludes WMP11,TVersity abd winamp5.5 aong others. thoughthe 360 will need to have non WMV and MP4 video transcoded.

But then again UPnP is such a messy ugly chore to use when trying to find the media you're looking for, it's a big messy unorganized pile of media files. And this is why the 360 is great with he Media Center Extender, compared to the UPnP mess, it's beautifull, it's clean and you can organize stuff just like you want easy with folder and everything as normal.

Besides that though, TVersity is a horrible piece of software period. It's one of the worst peces of software I have ever installed. for streaming my music to my 360 while playing, I'm using UPnP through WMP11, cause I just couldn't stand the instability,s lowness and general crapness of TVersity. the only good thing it does is allow you to transcode on the go.... when it decides not to crash, and it doesn't do an all too good of a job at it form a quality point of view, especially on HD meda...

i get no instability with the PS3 which is why i was making my point earlier, when streaming videos or music to PS3 it just feels a lot better than streaming it to the 360. Not sure why this is, maybe TVersity is designed better for PS3 i dont know. Maybe the 360 does not read the streamed data properly, who knows

yeah i use it in conjunction with TVersity on the 360, however when streaming videos they can only be WMV and sometimes certain mp4 formats. But it was the "media centre" part i was referring to, to actually use that feature you need a MCE pc

Don't want to sound rude :p but what part of Media Center Extender you did not understand ? Both PS3 and XBOX360 are DLNA compliant devices. And yes, TVersity is bad. I had problems even before I had time to boot my 360. It's unstable as hell (Vista Ulti here). Transcode360 works like a charm. (Y)

I understand it, just that when i see "Media Centre" on the Dash i expect it to act like one, rather that have me purchase a MCE copy of windows to enable the Extender to work as a media centre. Not using ultimate, im waiting out on the service pack id rather MS fix the problems with Vista first before i upgrade. Maybe all this whining from me will go away once i do. I think transcode360 needs MCE to run anyways so its useless for an XP person. Hence the reason im still using TVersity and WMP11. I have Vista Business through my MSDNAA but that dont have a media centre in it, its a shame :(

edit: just read the wikipedia entry in ur post, seems the PS3 is a "DLNA CERTIFIED Player". Didnt see the xbox360 there, is that the reason why TVersity works better with the PS3? Sounds silly i know, the 360 does work just not aswell. Might just be that TVersity is not really a coding heaven.

I don't think that you're understanding that the "Media Center" from "Media Center Extender" on the 360 specifically refers to Windows Media Center, like using the name. If you don't have it or don't want to use it then it streams like the PS3 does.

It's like if the PS3 had a PSP Extender that worked with the PSP. They're just using the name.

um, you don't need ultimate.

You get MC with Premium wich is like the regular version of Vista, basic is for the low end computers or for consumers who can't afford to go directly for Premium.

even XP MCE works like regular XP and doesn't cost more than XP.

As for fixing the Vista poblems, I've never really had any but whatever.

I know Premium came with it, id rather get ultimate though, problems a few of my friends were having were with games, they basically suck at the moment and with MS touting that Vista is this and that for games it makes them look silly, i reckon the service pack will probably make the games run better *hopefully* If thats the case then ill deffos be buying ultimate.

I got ultimate on my deksopt and Premium on my laptop, There isn't really that much reason for getting ultimate, unless you really want animated desktops. of course the good animated desktops are the real 3D ones, but since MS signed a deal with stardock so they hav the support for 3D animated scenes and they won't give out any toosl for reular peopel to make them...

I prefer ultimate for Previous Versions. I love it (Y).

i think the snazzy backgrounds, dreamscene i think its called looks good, and apparently its the one to go for if your a gamer. So i would go for that, Vista Business offers nothing new over my xp pro apart from aero.

I think we are a bit off topic now.

So... to get back on topic. The 360 can do pretty much anything the PS3 can, and it has a higher power threshold as of now. So what is there that can bring the PS3 out of the slowly deepening hole?

How about the plenty of games coming out in the next few months? :

"But there's nothing on that list that looks good to me!" :p

Updated Blu Ray features/profile coming in the next firmware as well for anyone who's into their movies.

Both of them?

Different hits for different people.

COD4

PSEye thingy

Assasins Creed

NFS ProStreet

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men

Haze

Timeshift

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

MOH: Airborne (Crap game btw)

SingStar

Should keep me busy and broke :p

and with tons of luck, maybe UT3 :p

Or has that been definitely prosponed to 2008? I ain't been on the net for 2 weeks. Last position I seen it in was "We'll try for 2007 ~ December release"

At least Mark Rein has positive things to say about it...

" I was playing the PS3 build for a few hours tonight and it is really, really fantastic. Amazingly smooth and solid. I think you PS3 users are in for a huge treat with UT3."

I think it's the exclusives he was referring to, meaning a reason to purchase one over the other. From that list that would be R&C (which is already out), Uncharted, and Singstar (although I don't know how much of a system seller that'll be).

Haze as well!

Buzz!: Quiz TV is also out this year. That usually sells quite a bit.

Haze is like Assassin's Creed, a badly kept secret exclusive. It'll come out on the 360 after the PS3.

    • Grand Theft Auto VI pricing revealed alongside Ultimate Edition and pre-loading details by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Last week, Rockstar revealed Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders will be starting soon, and just a day ahead of that, now the studio has announced the official pricing for the highly anticipated game. This has been a hotly debated topic among fans and industry veterans for a long time, considering the game is expected to be the biggest entertainment product launch ever. The confirmed pricing for the Grand Theft Auto VI standard edition is $79.99, which Rockstar says gives access to the "single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet." This follows what most of our readers thought would happen with the pricing too. At the same time, a $99.99 Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition has been confirmed as well, which lands with "an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story." Pre-ordering will also give fans extra bonuses, including a Vintage Vice City Pack of cosmetic items as well as a free month of GTA+. Head to the official website of the game here to check out all the cosmetic rewards the Ultimate Edition and pre-orders bring. Interestingly, the studio does not mention Grand Theft Auto VI multiplayer at all in today's announcement. Perhaps this will arrive later, following the campaign launch, or the studio is keeping that reveal for a later date. Digital pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will begin on June 25, 2026, at midnight local time across regions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The title is slated to launch on November 19 on those same platforms. Pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI will kick off on November 12, giving players a week to get the game ready on their consoles. As for the physical edition, Take-Two has confirmed that this will be available without a disc, with the box only containing a download code inside. This will be purchasable starting November 12, giving players who take this route time to pre-load the title as well.
    • Turbo Pascal was my first real programming experience more than 30 years ago at university. I mostly taught myself from the included examples and help documentation, because the university only taught the basic syntax and philosophy of Pascal, without going deeply into Turbo Pascal’s advanced features. I still remember when I discovered that I could embed assembly language directly into Pascal code, call BIOS functions, manipulate screen memory, use mouse interrupts, and control peripherals from my programs. That opened huge doors for me. Programming back then felt really fun, direct, and close to the machine. What I loved about Pascal was its readability and the almost instant compile time. Turbo Pascal was an amazing environment, but unfortunately Turbo Pascal for Windows 3 did not feel like it fully carried that legacy forward. Later, Delphi got things back on the right track after the messy transition to TP for Windows. Sadly, Delphi suffered from years of uncertainty as it moved from Borland to CodeGear and then to Embarcadero. That instability made many developers lose confidence in it, even though Delphi itself remained a powerful and productive tool. I still work with Delphi from time to time, but I definitely miss the old days of Turbo Pascal.
    • I hope this encodes in to AV1 or AV2 as currently tiktok uses h265 and h264.
