PS3 2.10 Tomorrow

I'd be careful with the update you download from there. Notice it's from the UK site and not the US site.

Edit: Added download link:

Since Sony changed the layout of the page, they hid the direct download link in the Update using a PC section. Link

U.S. 2.10 Update

good thinking... if the eu one isnt compatible, i doubt it would cause harm, but just not update. sony would of built in some form of regiion coding to determine this (or else they wouldnt give people the option to download via pc, and make it console driven only...).

hopefully OMEGA wont have to download it twice though....

The update files are "universal", you can use them regardless of the region... as is the case with the PSP.

Yup, im "ripping" them to 720p (1080p won't work) .mkv files first (Y) :p

Then I use GOTSent - http://sentry23.googlepages.com/ to change the mkv container to an MP4 container - Usually takes about 5-10mins. MKV is just a container, inside of it is usually MPEG4 video/AC3 audio which the PS3 can play fine with it's own codecs - It just can't recognize MKV, and that's why we rebundle the contents of the mkv file into an MP4 container instead. There is NO quality loss in doing this.

After that I copy the MP4 file to my external FAT32 hard drive, lug it downstairs, plug it into the PS3 and then either play off the drive or do what I do most often, copy to the PS3's hard drive (push triangle, then copy).

You could attempt to stream the mp4 file, but it doesn't work well/at all over a wireless connection. TVersity can also copy the file from your PC to your PS3 hard drive over the network, but again, if you do that over wireless it takes a lot longer to copy from PC hard drive, to PS3 hard drive.

How do you rip them to 720p .mkv files? Care to share the program your using? :D

I'm still using old 20th century DVD Shrink to backup my movies, time to go modern...

hopefully OMEGA wont have to download it twice though....

 connection died halfway through... so yes I do have to try again... I'll try kurono's this time though ;) thanks for pointing it out, I looked there and didn't see it the first 5 times... why couldn't they have left it where it was

Audioboxer (and me too) are "ripping" *cough

Keito what settings do you use in GOTsent?

I have everything on default (eg audio at AC3, FPS 23.976, everything else unchecked)

Within AC3Filter Options what do you have the output format at?

Just wanting to make sure I have everything setup for best results (Y)

My MP4 file is always slightly smaller than the original mkv file - Same for you?

It kinda depends on what my original is - sometimes I come across something with DTS audio, so I'll check DTS - usually it's AC3... I mostly check the nfo that I find about the specs :p) FPS I haven't ever changed

AC3 filter i've got to 2/0 Stereo and 16bit PCM - as audio is coming through my tv speakers which are 2.0 and 16bit is usually the same as the source file

My remuxed files are sometimes smaller, sometimes not - depends on how much the AAC codec likes me and if the source is 5.1 or not... 5.1 audio to 2.0 will surely be a bit smaller most of the times...

Will try to get Sentry23 to join here ;)

Is there any programs like gspot that work with mkv files to determine the audio setup?

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en mediainfo

is there a list of which codec/container combos work on ps3 anywhere?

From the top of my head;

  1. Codecs
  2. DivX 4.0 and up
  3. Xvid
  4. H264
  5. x264
  6. VC1
  7. MPEG2?

  1. Containers
  2. mp4
  3. avi+
  4. wmv*

+ 2GB file limit

* don't know about file limit yet

It supports DivX 3 and up. (3.11 the exception)

For anyone using GOTSent use the Nero AAC encoder - ftp://ftp6.nero.com/tools/NeroDigitalAudio.zip

I just realised it gives better quality audio.

Nero AAC codec is supported in this version. Just download the Nero AAC encoder here and extract NeroAacEnc_SSE2.exe or neroAacEnc.exe from the Win folder, and place the appropriate version in the GOTSent folder (check here for more information if your processor supports SSE2. The SSE2 version is faster then the normal version). Nero works better and faster then FFMPEG.

Keito how do you get your 4GB+ files onto the PS3?

TVersity + Copy... or a DVD + Copy?

It just so happened that the first movie I copied (Superbad) was just under 4GB (so I could use a portable drive), some others are just over though. At the moment im copying a file thats over 4GB over the network through TVersity - As im on wireless though, it takes a while to copy :(

For anyone trying to play HD content, i've found another app to go alongside GOTSent called mkv2vob

I have created a program which will remux mkv with x264 video and AC3 audio to a vob file which is playable on the sony ps3.

No transcoding/recompression is done, the streams are simply split and mux into the vob.

Previously there was no way to get AC3 audio on the ps3, only AAC stereo.

Takes only a few mins to convert a file.

Sceenshot of AC3 5.1 and x264 playing on ps3

Download program

http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.rar

1. Extract to a directory (dont just run it from within winrar) and run mkv2vob.exe

2. Select the MKV file

3. Select where to save the VOB.

4. Several windows will open/close during the process, do not interrupt it or click anything in these windows.

5. Playback the vob file through tversity, burn to dvd-r, flash drive, etc...

I tested it on various mkv files and it worked perfectly.

V1.3.1 20/Dec/2007

You will now be asked if you want to enable the mpeg2 transcoding option (click YES unless you split mkv into parts and you know it plays).

Fixed some bugs with mpeg2 transcoding where the audio is DTS.

V1.3 19/Dec/2007

Added detection of files that would be unplayable on ps3 (black screen) these files will now be transcoded to mpeg2.

Added 1080p support.

V1.2.1 25/Nov/2007

Fixed bug with foreign character sets which use , as a decimal seperator.

V1.2 16/Nov/2007

Fixed A/V sync problem if video framerate is not 23.976

Added DTS support (DTS is not playable by the ps3, but is converted to AC3 by the program)

Knows Bugs/Limitations

Will only use the first audio/video track in the mkv.

If the encoding tools (mkvextract/ffmpeg/h264info) crash or you close them, it will create a non working vob but still say successful.

Fastforward/rewind the vob on ps3 will mess up A/V sync.

For PS3 2.10 update, it may be necessary instead of pressing select to press Triangle and select Play from beginning.

While certain things may be a little buggier than GOTSent (ff/rw), VOB supports files over 4GB and allows audio to remain in untouched 5.1 Dolby status! (5.1ch AC3) :woot:

GOTSent changed the AC3 audio to 2Ch AAC stereo audio.

Give it a go if you care about your audio (Y)

Also, according to the release notes, 1080p is supported! - I can't confirm that yet, only used the program on 720p content. (GOTSent definitely doesn't support 1080p)

awe man... I've been off the intertubses since Monday and ony droped the DivX-bomb on the PS3!

I'm pretty happy to be out of MA for the x-mas season and in the nice warm tropical Panamanian weather, but I do hate how bandwidth in this country sux :-(

I did bring along my PS3 and my external HDD, and I'm currently downloading FW 2.10 over a 256kbps ADSL line.... so I should be done by tonight right? ;-)

I'm pretty sure FW2.10 puts the PS3 as king-of-the-hill when it comes to media-centers  good stuff Sony :-)

and lolz @ the HOME picture Audioboxer ;-)

Can anyone help me, I'm kinda dumb at this stuff.

When I rip my movies to my PC HDD I get a VIDEO_TS folder with numerous files (vob files, bup files, ifo files), is it possible to play this as one whole file on the PS3? I read somewhere that the PS3 can play vob files...?

So my question is can I somehow in essence "zip up" the whole folder with all the files into one file that I can copy onto my PS3 HDD and play?

I guess I could just copy the main VOB files of the movie the ones that are 1GB+ each and put them on the PS3, right? But I'd prefer having one big file on the PS3 instead of a number of them... thanks!

Edit: If this all does work I think I'll be picking up a external HDD for Xmas :D

I might of missed it, but what about some files I have as .ogm.

I gather I would not be able to watch them on a PS3, what would I have to do to them to be able to, I haven't a clue what codec they use or if .ogm is just a container that could be changed via earlier mentioned means.
