Warner Bros to back Blu-ray DVD format exclusively

Recommended Posts

Well personally I think Blu Ray won when Sony agreed to allow porn on it. :p

Costco is going to get raped with all the returned HD-DVD's

If you want to be serious though, Sony helped shift this war with implementing Blu Ray in the PS3 - You can't argue that. I laugh at all the naysayers who said it was the worst idea ever putting Blu Ray in a console (not people who had doubts, those who were downright arrogant about their belief that ps3 & blur ray would fail)

I still believe if MS had been sensible and integrated the HDDVD into the elite, which they should have done (for movies only), things could be a lot different!

Especially with a good chunk of those 17.7 million 360s being elites!

And the Samsungs, and the Panasonics, and the Pioneers, and the Sony standalones...

Don't know about the Philips or the LG ones. Sharp *just* came out with theirs...

Sony's PS3 updates have been much different because they add a lot of functionality.

He's refering to making players Profile 1.1.. you know to support everything that exists on HD DVD players.

No that's not possible. The only standalone player that is true Profile 1.1 is the $500 Panasonic BD30. It's a good player, but considering what we got for $100 from HD DVD it's ridiculously overpriced.

A friend of mine has just pointed out that some numbers are already being discussed. The whispers are that BDA paid Warner between $450-$650 million.

The fact that both sides did stuff like this makes me mad. The consumer didn't decide anything, the corporations did by purchasing loyalty.

While I agree the whole war has stunk of "corruption", pay offs, money deals ect, that doesn't excuse Blu Ray outselling HD-DVD for almost the whole year.

Joel, you do agree Blu Ray beat HD-DVD on software sales right?

The consumers did decide that part... or at least played an important role there.

But that is overshadowed by the deeds that no doubt went on behind the scenes.

Quite right... sucks really, and if what Boz said is true I will be supremely ****ed, as should everyone else. I have a hd-dvd player but with this news I will probably be buying a dual format player as soon as prices on them come down, and after this ridiculous profile situation is sorted out, that way I can still play my hd-dvd collection.

I believe that both sides tried to outdo the other, what with buy a player and get 100 free movies, BOGO or payments to studios to lock out the other guy. If BD outsold HD-DVD for any reason that didn't have to do with free offers, it still doesn't mean that HD-DVD stunk up the joint. We were never talking domination of BD, just steady sales. The fact that BD still isn't even a final standard troubles me and should also trouble the studios as they don't want to be dragged into the consumer problem of deciphering profile version numbers when deciding if they should purchase disc A, when they're not sure it will play in yesterday's BD player. When I'm referring to the indifference of the consumer, it's because Warner's press release is contradictory and insulting. They refer to indifference, then state the consumer demanded BD. If the 2 formats were creating indifference, who demanded something? Just say you made a crapload of money while jerking off the consumer during the Xmas season, and be honest.

Can't disagree with that, an announcement on the 4TH?! of January (N)

Just late enough for some of the Jan sales to have kicked off as well.

A friend of mine has just pointed out that some numbers are already being discussed. The whispers are that BDA paid Warner between $450-$650 million.

It wouldnt suprise me in the slightest if thats what really happened here.

Like i said, the better format has lost. And its all thanks to the Corporations, not the Consumers.

You are right, the consumer was never given the chance to chose.Only if all studios had been neutral since the beginning would the consumer have chosen. And the one to win would be the one with the lowest prices. If prices had been the same, it would have never ended. Something had to happen. I was hoping, to this point, that all studios went neutral. A lot of players have been sold laready.

And BD new features dont bother at all. I didnt care for them before, I dont care for them now. They must stop trying to pass Pip as the next-best-thing

Now that the excitement had died down, I realize how screwed up that is.

Oh well, I never liked Warner Bros. anyways.

Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara says the studio took no pay-offs to exclusively back Blu-ray.

In a post-announcement conference call, Tsujihara flatly denied rumors that studio had accepted anywhere from 250M to $500M in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support.

According to the exec, Warner's sole motivation in dropping its HD DVD format support was to ensure growth of the "category" and the long-term health of the industry.

    • Personally, I think these things are way over rated and way over priced, even at this price. I recently had Frontier Fiber installed with 2 of these devices and although they worked, I switched back to my own router and AP setup and get way better consistency on wireless speed than with Eeros. Wired speed seems to be more consistent also. Will be returning Eeros soon. I had told Frontier I didn't want them to begin with.
    • Yes, exactly what I have been thinking. Don't make the context menu simpler, make it smarter to learn what I actually use. And then, give me the ability to pin settings that I rarely use but need forget where they are.
