Cloverfield (2008)

I didn't mind the camera effect, but I felt like the movie was pointless. Ok, the monster is attacking the city, get out! Why you running back to the girl? The ending was also horrible. for me I'd give a 2/5 because of the interesting story but other than that, it's pretty bad.

What kind of ending were you expecting? The typical everyone lives, Hollywood ending?

something less abrupt maybe. lets say how goverment found that tape, after nuke. ok might not be that relevant but something more. i havent figured out precisely what, but it felt that tehre should be somehting.

and speaking of shaky camera, at first it was a bit anoying, during the party, but once the action started it was ok. i dont see how one can get dizzy from it.

overall 7/10

The entire movie is about what you see in the videotape. Everything that happens that wasnt captured in the videocam, you wont get to see. That's the whole concept of films like this.

I had zero dizziness. People should just sit back and not concentrate trying to see and track every speck of dust on screen. :p

It had a decent storyline even though he was freaking stupid to go back for his girlfriend! The thing that makes me practically give it a 1/5 is it litterally had the effing worst ending of any movie I have ever seen. It made me want a refund for the $10 I spent to see it.

I just saw the movie today...it was pretty tense in some scenes. I liked it. I was very irritated by the camera movement though. My friend and his daughter had to move towards the back of the theater because they started to feel sick from the camera movement. I think the director should have had the character pretend to use a camera that had image stabilization. I had to turn away from the screen many times and stare at something stationary for a second just to relax my eyes.

Amazing movie. I'd recommend it to anyone. There's just one small thing that surprised me. I can't believe no one noticed what happened at the end. By no one, I mean my friends. I'll use a spoiler tag just to be safe.

At the very end of the movie, it shows a final clip of Rob and his girlfriend. They aim the camera towards the ocean and as they're moving the camera back you see a black cigar shaped object crash into the ocean. It's hard to notice because it's almost off screen, and you only see it for a second. Perhaps this means that the creature is of alien origin.

What I found extremely stupid is that the main character focus too much of his attention on the girl. I mean, an out of this world MONSTER is attacking the city & he never spoke once about it. Actually no one did except Hud & he was completely annoying.

It is a love story first then a survival story.

Given that this is not a realistic situation by any means.. but, if it were my wife or children, i most certainly would do anything i had to be with them. If you were to honestly put yourself in that situation, as ridiculous as it is, you have to think that even if the building is falling down, a few hundred pounds walking on top is certainly not going to make it crash down completely. Also, you have to figure, again given the situation, that you're pretty much F#&$%D either way, why not die trying to help your family or loved one.

Just my 2 cents.. but if it were me, i would do the same thing.

I feel the same. If I knew that my wife and kids were laying somewhere dying and would most definately die if I did nothing, I would rather die trying to help than run off to safety and live a life of grief and regert knowing I choe to run while they lay dieing.

I don't know, but I too would have liked a bit more backstory (where it came from, what the results were)

For me that's what makes it more interesting. I don't need every question answered to be satisfied, probably why I like more indie films than Hollywood films. Hollywood typically dumbs everything down and answers every question and doesn't leave it up to my imagination.

But they couldn't give us anymore information than what they did based on the style of filming (i.e. first person POV). The next film will probably answer a lot of the questions we have, such as where the monster officially came from. Although we can safely assume it came from outer space considering the thing that falls in the water in the last scene (if you haven't seen it, then look just to the left of the boat on the right-hand side of the screen during the Cony Island scene).

Its actually a satellite that fall from outer space, its is all explained in the comic that was made for the move and also explains how the monster was created in a sense.

I wouldn't. First, DAT is about a guy trying to save the world from Global Warming. Cloverfield is about friends trying to save one person, during a monster attack.

There are behind the scene love stories in both The Day After Tomorrow and the Cloverfield. A father is trying to save a son who has fallen for a girl in DAT. (If it's just horrow/action/sci-fi - few people would watch movies and Hollywood has learned this lesson very well since the 70-80's. Human emotions is what makes the audience connected to characters in films and appeals to a larger audience thus bringing in more cash to studios.)

The main genre, however, is apocalypse - how some destructive and uncontrollable force influences average human lives.

The War of the Worlds is very close to these two films in the same retrospect.

I just saw it last night and I was very impressed!

If you won't feel sick from the camera moving around a lot (which I don't) then this is a great movie going experience.

I was very tense that whole time and I thought the character development wasn't bad. Yes the story and the 'monster' aren't the best, but I was so engrossed in the movie and you just had no idea what was going to happen next. That alone made it worth seeing. I highly recommend seeing this movie in theatres, because watching it on a crappy TV and sound system wouldn't do it justice at all.

Another thing about the movie was that the setting and all the conversations that were going on at the party were so realistic, I just thought they did such a good job getting you into their little lives, and then totally crashing them down.

J.J. Abrams is the executive producer and creator of the story and one of the Lost writers is the screenwriter for this. So they stuck a little easter egg in for those who are Lost fans.

Oh, right. I understand now. I also just found out that there are some Lost easter eggs in Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
