Mario Kart Wii

Recommended Posts

Picked it up late last night. Started playing with the wheel, and shortly after switched over to my wavebird. Much, much better. I can't stand that awful wheel. Having fun so far.

Same as me. Dislike the wheel, wavebird FTW.

Surprising i have been playing online all this afternoon and haven't come across any Americans online yet.

The wheel works fine, I like it. After playing w/ the wheel I wonder how I ever played with a controller in the first place. Online mode is pretty good too. Pretty fast. The new courses were a disappointment for me. They seem to be based off other tracks instead of being original like the DS version was.

A friend of mine got it today and we played through all the 150cc Grand Prix events, and played some local MP with 2 other friends and had a blast. There are a few nagging things that we tend to agree to dislike (such as not being able to hop when in Automatic - I understand not being able to drift and get the mini-boost, but hopping can help out in other situations), but overall it's pretty fantastic.

I do kind of have to say I'm surprised it took them this long to release this version, considering half the maps are rehashes of maps from other Mario Kart games, and there's not a heck of a lot else substantially different from other Mario Karts (no, that's not a complaint).

I also like how they integrate local Mii's into the track scenery. It's pretty clever.

Yep, the use of your Miis in-game is an excellent implementation. It's so subtle and 'background' -- and simple, but who wouldn't love to see their friends and creations as they drive by! Coconut Mall is great... drove by to see Ali G on a wall poster, and Alf and Charlie Brown driving cars in the parking lot.

Used the wheel for a race or two, but my choice is Remote + nunchuck. You get analog steering, and feel very precise, while you can still use the motion sensing to do tricks.

When going online, we were using two-players local, against online people. I notice that the graphics are severely scaled down to go online. It's 60fps local single player, 30fps for local multiplayer, split screen, but online looks like 20fps; textures are very fuzzy and it's just not pretty. Come back to singleplayer and it's like WOW this game looks great.

But oh well.

Online seems nicely done; one complaint is that if two local players with licenses go online, you can only use one license at a time. This means, only the player whose license you started the game and launched online under, gets their stats logged. Big oversight in my opinion.

Powersliding and getting boost is much easier this time around. No more wiggling the steering around, though you can adjust while in a slide to get to orange sparks. I had a VERY tough time sliding on some bikes because they corner SO sharply, they basically would take a 90 degree turn to the side! Tough, but the bikes themselves are fun.

Great game, super fun to play with others!

I remember the day when my friend showed me the 'online' exploit using FF to get Mario Kart online with Gamecube. So it's a great day to finally see Mario Kart (console) go online!

I haven't had the opportunity to try this out, but is it possible for two people on one Wii to play against two friends who have another Wii (two people on one console vs two friends on another console)?

yes. Have one console host the game. Get the other one to go to friends when given the choice between continental/global/friends and just join the game you just created.

Did it on the weekend with 6 players on 3 wii's.

    • I agree, especially if it is cloud sourced, like this one is.. but I wouldn't say no to a local AI assistant similar to the Zettlab one which would be really helpful with my large Photos library, but also to perform tasks like installing Docker apps rather than me having to do it via Docker Compose, but I don't think we're quite there yet. Synology Photos is somewhat AI, you can ask it to search for certain people (if you have tagged them and it will attempt to match similar photos to the person) and if you put a search term in for "cars" for example, it will show you all photos with a car.
    • I doubt that Google will keep the same price... it may go up from that list published.

    • So the card is targeted at headphone users - so the review should be from someone that uses this - maybe I can review a card next time.
