Captain America: The First Avenger (July 2011)

Robert Buckley as Bucky? Who?s Captain America?

It?s now March 3, 2010 which means that the casting deadline of March 1st as revealed by Joe Johnston, director of The First Avenger: Captain America has come and gone and we still don?t know who Captain America is. We at least know a group of candidates but that may not actually represent all of the possibilities of who could be selected.

At a press conference for Johnston?s recently released Wolfman several weeks ago, the director revealed during the Q&A some details about Captain America and the casting criteria. We found out from him that the actor would definitely be American, that he would be young and relatively unknown, surrounded by bigger stars in the supporting cast (similar to the setup with Kenneth Branagh?s Thor). The one sticking point that had fans excited was that he also said they?d have the hero selected by March 1st.

Fast forward a few weeks and reports hit the net that Marvel has narrowed down the potential wishlist of Captain America candidates to a select group of young actors. Of that list, the name that got the most attention was John Krasinski, apparently a top contender. I have a feeling though that while they may have been keen on that idea, many fans were not and I think this may be what?s holding the process up.

Needless to say, the selection of who will play Steve Rogers is an extremely important decision for the future of Marvel Studios. Their in-development films literally depend on this choice. If they were leaning toward Krasinski, the intense negative feedback to his candidacy could be why we?re still waiting to hear who?ll wield the symbolic shield and lead The Avengers. That or Johnston was just throwing out that statement when they still needed to test more actors.

I think many have a tough time buying Krasinski outside of his character?s trademark attributes and goofy facial expressions from the hit NBC series The Office and like me, have difficulty picturing him leading Iron Man and Thor into battle.

The other rather large rumor that surfaced just prior to the listing of these candidates was that actor Robert Buckley was cast as Captain America. This original report was quickly taken down and this may be because they were asked to take it down or because it was completely false. Fortunately for us and a few other sites like our friends at IESB, we caught it in time.

From what I?m hearing now, that may not be entirely off the mark. What I?ve been told is that Buckley did audition for the role of Captain America but they thought he might be a good fit for Cap?s sidekick, Bucky. He was/is in talks for the movie and someone jumped the gun on presuming he was selected for the title role. If you?re a reader of the Marvel Comics, then you know Bucky takes up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers is assassinated in the conclusion of the Civil War cross-over event. So by geek technicality, we could say that he is cast as a future Captain America if his is signed as Bucky?

This is a similar situation to what we saw with Tom Hiddleston in Thor where he was a candidate who auditioned for the role of the Mighty God of Thunder but director Kenneth Branagh thought he?d be a better fit for the role of Loki and he got it. As for Buckley, none of this is confirmed and there could be more names show up for both roles that we?ve not come across yet in the reports. It could be a few weeks still before the decision is made.

Good grief, this casting is really dragging, isn't it? Now that Disney owns Marvel, I hope that isn't going to impact things... I mean they're not trying to get Zac Efron in it are they? *shudders*

nah I mentioned the candidates a few posts back, they are the ones who are up for it so its one of them

Well, at least that's something... LOL I wasn't particularly enthused by those suggestions either... I really hope Marvel pulls this one off, because it is going to be rather important for the Avengers movie... I wonder what setup Iron Man 2 will have in it for the Avengers movie too... I'm really excited about how they're tieing this all together... :)

A couple weeks ago a short list was leaked, containing the actors that Joe Johnston was considering for Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in The First Avenger: Captain America. The list included John Krasinski (The Office), Scott Porter (Speed Racer, Friday Night Lights, Caprica), Mike Vogel (She?s Out of My League, Cloverfield) Michael Cassidy (Smallville) and Patrick Flueger (Brothers, The 4400), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy), most of which had agreed to do a screen test for Marvel. We now know that you can cross at least one of those names off that list!

Smallville/The O.C./Privileged star Michael Cassidy confirms that he is out of the running for the role. Does that mean that Marvel has made their choice? Johnson previously stated that casting needed to be complete by March 1st 2010 (a date that has now passed) as filming is set to begin at the end of June in the UK. Thanks to /Film reader Max B for the tip.

John Krasinski would be one of the worst choices they could make. He's a funny guy but no way fit for this role. I still think he should be an older actor. If they really wanted John than I'm really worried about this film. If they think thats the right choice then what else have they screwed up.

I agree fully there, I am still wanting Jon Hamm to be the shock choice!

another one leaves the running!

Today Scott Porter from Friday Night Lights said the following on his Facebook:

aint Cap. Thank you all for the prayers though, I appreciate them all so very much though!!

So here's the other actors that are still possibly in the running Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Patrick Flueger (Brothers), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy) and John Krasinski (Office)

Personally, I think Batman and Superman make more sense taking place in the 30s and 40s when the comics were originally created. I would love to see the movies recreate that era. The idea behind the comics simply speak a lot to the feeling of that time in history.

Wow, is this how they're going to announce who got the roll? By process of elimination? LOL

A shame, because out of the list Michael Cassidy was probably my favorite... Though Scott Porter I guess would have been my number two... It seems like they're eliminating the good choices... LMAO

it does seem that way

Whoa, scary picture today Rappy... lol

I really hope that Marvel doesn't botch this one... Since we'll have to see this guy in The Avengers movie too... I hope they aren't going to cast one person to play Steve Rogers before Super Serum and someone else to play him after Super Serum... :-\

nah it'll be the same actor, I think we might hear something this week

John Krasinski is the Top Choice for Captain America?

Last week Smallville/The O.C./Privileged star Michael Cassidy confirmed that he is out of the running for the role. And yesterday, Jonas Brothers and Dane Cook were rumored/revealed to have auditioned for roles in the film. And now Fox 411 is reporting that Office star John Krasinski is Marvel?s top choice for the part, after reading four times for producers and recording two costumed screen tests.

?It?s very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week.?

Why hasn?t he been offered the role? Why hasn?t it yet been announced? According to Fox?s source, the producers are having Krasinski read with multiple actresses up for the female leads, to ensure chemistry. According to the source, ?They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else.? When Krasinski was revealed on the short list a few weeks ago, fans were not happy with the choice, calling him too small and unmuscular for the role of the scientifically engineered super soldier.

Director Joe Johnson previously stated that casting needed to be complete by March 1st 2010 (a date that has now passed) as filming is set to begin at the end of June in the UK.

    • Microsoft updates Visual Studio Code with chat cost tracking and multi-agent chats by Paul Hill Microsoft has just launched Visual Studio Code 1.126, its latest weekly release. This time, the company has focused on letting you see the total cost of chat sessions to spot expensive conversations; enabling multiple chats per session that run side-by-side in one agent host Copilot session; and letting you browse new folders safely in restricted mode. We have now reached the stage where free AI in IDEs is coming to an end. To help you keep track of your costs, VS Code now lets you see the entire cost of a chat session, rather than just individual turns. This should give you more transparency about which sessions consume the most credits, so you can better manage your usage over time and spend less. For those of you using the Agents window, you know it is possible to run and manage multiple agent sessions at once. In this update, a Copilot session started from an agent host can hold several chats at once. Explaining how this feature works, Microsoft writes: Finally, from this update forward, Microsoft will remove the pop-up when opening an untrusted folder. When you open a new folder now, it will automatically open in Restricted Mode. You will see a banner that lets you manage the trust level of the folder. Microsoft has made this change so that it’s easier to start inspecting code without giving it trust right away. If you have VS Code, you can check for updates within the app now to get this new version. Otherwise, you can download it from the Visual Studio Code website.
    • Anthropic accuses Alibaba of using 25,000 fake accounts to copy Claude's capabilities by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic has accused Alibaba of using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts to extract capabilities from Claude on a huge scale. According to a report from Reuters, Anthropic told US lawmakers that operators linked to Alibaba and the company’s Qwen AI team generated 28.8 million exchanges with Claude between April 22 and June 5, 2026. That is a lot of Claude conversations, but Anthropic says this was not ordinary chatbot use. The company believes the accounts were part of a coordinated effort to collect answers that could help train or improve rival AI systems. The alleged campaign reportedly focused on some of Claude’s most valuable skills, including software development, multi-step reasoning, and agentic tasks. In practical terms, that means getting an AI model to plan and complete work across several stages rather than simply answering a single question. This is called 'distillation,' where AI companies use outputs from a larger model to train a smaller and cheaper one. The smaller model learns to imitate useful parts of the more capable system without needing the same amount of computing power. The distillation process isn't automatically suspicious, but the problem comes when one company gathers another provider's outputs without permission and at an industrial scale. Also, this does not mean Alibaba obtained Claude’s source code, model weights, or original training data. Instead, Anthropic claims the accounts repeatedly asked Claude carefully designed questions and collected the answers. Those answers could then be used as training material for another model. Anthropic has made similar accusations against DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax earlier this year. As Neowin previously reported, Anthropic said those three companies collectively generated more than 16 million Claude exchanges through roughly 24,000 accounts. Anthropic says the new campaign produced almost twice as many exchanges in a matter of weeks. Anthropic reportedly told lawmakers that the campaign could help Chinese AI developers approach the capabilities of its Mythos Preview model. Mythos is focused on advanced cybersecurity work, including finding and exploiting complex software vulnerabilities. via Reuters | Photo via DepositPhotos.com
