Captain America: The First Avenger (July 2011)

As the first two parts of our interview with the Marvel Insider dealt with THOR, in today's final piece we saved the best for last. Today it's about CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE AVENGERS.

Hopefully our Marvel Insider can continue to score us cool info as the movies proceed into production.

So as Stan Lee would say...Excelsior!

Everyone has their own personal choices about who should play Captain America. What's yours?

My choice for Captain America would be Matt Damon.

But that?s not going to happen.

No. Personally, I know little of the work from the guy's on the short list, except for John Krasinski, but I don?t think he' right for the role. He?s too tall and he?s oriented more to TV sitcoms or comedic films. I just don?t think he?s the right fit for Captain America. I'm hearing the tests for him are not really going well. But don't feel bad for John, his fiance is Emily Blunt who would have made a great Black Widow.

The other potential actors I don?t know too well. I know what they look like, and I've seen some of their material, but Captain America needs to be played by a strong actor. He?s got to have incredibly strong character because not only does become an Adonis from the Super-Soldier serum, but he develops into an amazing fighter. He also has to be a guy who can establish order in complete chaos. With the Avengers, you?ve got Tony Stark being funny and doing his thing. You?ve got Thor who is a God and a bit of a loose cannon and you?ve got the Incredible Hulk. You need a guy who?s a disciplined leader. Most importantly, as leader of The Avengers Cap needs an actor whose presence can even overshadow that of Robert Downey Jr. After all, Tony Stark sort of ends up following him, right?

Can you elaborate a bit on Captain America?

Not entirely sure, but it definitely must open before The Avengers. There's a completed script ready to go. It's already in its third draft. It?s a period piece. The first half of the movie starts off in World War II, then, I believe, the film concludes with him getting frozen in the ice and being discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. That actually makes sense. Why wait until The Avengers to have Cap meet Stark, Fury and the team and then sign up? Time is limited and you waste it if you spend the first act establishing relationships between Cap and the others. This way, when The Avengers story begins, he'll be somewhat familiar with his new comrades and the main plot can kick into gear immediately.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And that isn't going to be an easy feat.

Zachary Quinto!

no just no

I just can't either of those acts outshining Robert Downey, Jr. I guess we'll see.

yeah but if you had that mindset you would never make the movie, it could well be the reason why its taking time to appoint the role

It's hard to outshine RDJ. They just need an actor who looks like he can command authority. He doesn't have to have Stark's charm or wit. He's not expected to, but he has to be strong enough to put Iron Man in his place which is damn near impossible. Physical stature is what would do it imo. If he's big enough to look down on Stark he can pull it off. Which you can only get with an older actor.

so whos your pick?

certainly not the 2 who are now favourites, my choice will always be John Hamm because he has the presence, the screen experience and the size for a proper captain not some lame american jock whos a clear wiseass.

It's not going to happen for John but I can live in hope :)

Hamm is my top choice too. Has the build of Cappy, big enough overall to get Stark in line and definitely has the look like he doesn't take **** from anyone. He just "looks" the role imo. Plus he's a terrific actor as well.

too bad hamm won't get it, he isn't even being considered from what i hear. alot of fans want him for an older superman as well.

he was asked about that Superman speculation recently and he didn't want to be supes.

Add Channing Tatum to the list of names of actors being considered for the role of Captain America.

Tatum now joins Wilson Blethel and Mike Vogel, who have screen-tested, plus Chris Evans, who has read for the part. Marvel is also still keen on Garrett Hedlund.

At this stage, Tatum, who just wrapped filming on the Steven Soderbergh action flick ?Knockout,? has only been approached for the role and has not seen a script. The actor played Duke in ?G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,? but despite that movie doing modestly at the box-office, fanboy reaction was muted and its viability as a franchise is set on neutral.

Tatum certainly has the heft for Captain America, but can he play the 98-pound weakling alter ego Steve Rogers was before taking the super-serum which turns him into a perfect human specimen? This could be Tatum?s chance to pull a ?Machinist? -- Christian Bale lost 60 pounds for the role which, while attracting some heat from health groups, received acclaim for his performance in that movie.

Casting for other roles in the Captain America movie is just as hot.

Hugo Weaving?s deal is still being worked on, though not much movement has occurred since last week.

And the search is on for the female lead. Details for the part are being kept secret for now but it is rumored to be his flame Betsy Ross (ironically, named after the woman who is credited with creating the American flag). Keira Knightley was approached last week but the studio is also looking at other actresses.

Tatum looks good enough to be Cappy but I dunno how good he is as an actor. His last movie was GI Joe... Besides becoming the leader of the Avengers is one hell of an upgrade from that catastrophe.

He may fool me but I don't think he's a good enough actor for that role.
