Captain America: The First Avenger (July 2011)

i dunno the wolfman was pretty kick a@@. if it does fail im sure they will recast captain for the avengers.

in reality they can't because all the films are not interlocking so you need the same cast, like Thor is in IM2 like Stark was in Hulk. You can't recast because it wouldn't be right but time will tell.

Evans would be ok if it was only the origin but its not. I think he's a bad choice for the long run. And they can recast think War Machine. Just unlikely for the starring roles. He'll have quite the time convincing me he's not a smartass kid and a strong leader.

Chris Evans is ?not a big comic book reader?

Fans of the Captain America comic books may want to avoid reading this, as it may cause offense. The actor who was recently cast as Steve Rogers, Chris Evans, isn?t that into comic books (gasp!). This shocking revelation was revealed this weekend at WonderCon in San Francisco while Evans was promoting The Losers (another comic book movie).

He said that he doesn?t really have a history and a love for comics and he didn?t grow up reading them. They are ?fantastic for films?, however.

Here?s more of what he had to say, from Sci-Fi Wire:

?The beautiful thing about comic books, even movies based on novels, you have a blueprint,? Evans added. ?You have a tangible thing to say, ?Listen, this is the story we?re going to work.? Especially in comic books. You have a color palate. You have visual home base to kind of root yourself in. So, as an actor, it?s nice knowing the people behind the visual elements of the film have this kind of blue print to work off of.?

So why Captain America? ?I don?t know,? he stammered, as the gathering of reporters laughed. ?I don?t know. It?s just, ? it was, ? I don?t know.? He chuckled.

?I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now,? he said. ?And it?s a fun character. Even if it wasn?t a comic book. I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He?s a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I would probably want to do it. So it wasn?t necessarily about the comic itself. It was about ? ?

At this point, Evans? Losers co-star Zoe Saldana chimed in: ?It was about the tights.?

Evans laughed. ?Any time I can get in blue tights ? . He?s a great character. He?s a great character to play. He just happens to be a comic book character.?

I?ve only read one comic book in my life so I?m not going to comment on his lack of love for them, although you would have thought a guy who has starred in so many comic book movies would have had some interest in them. Bryan Singer told his X-Men cast back in 2000 not to bother too much with the comics and just focus on the movie at hand, and I?m pretty sure Robert Downey Jr. wasn?t all that clued up on Iron Man before taking the role, so it?s not that big of a deal.

Evans, like most actors, probably took the role for the money and because it?s a good career move, but he may get into the comics as he gets more involved with the character during filming. All that really matters is that the people behind the camera know who Captain America is. Director Joe Johnston seems to know the character pretty well, so fans shouldn?t be too worried with Evans? lack of knowledge.

Who would have thought that Captain America has connections to Carrie Bradshaw?

A well-placed source tells me that British actress Alice Eve, 28, is the front-runner to play Peggy Carter in the much chattered about upcoming superhero movie The First Avenger: Captain America.

You may not know Eve by name (yet), but?

She's the blond beauty in the recently released She's Out of My League. She'll also be seen next month in the second Sex and the City movie playing Charlotte's nanny.

Also up for the Peggy Carter part is fellow Brit Hayley Atwell, 28. I'm told both actresses are screen-testing for the second time for the coveted role tomorrow in London. I also hear that Keira Knightley is no longer in the running.

As y'all know by now, Chris Evans will play Captain America. It was also just announced that Gossip Girl actor Sebastian Stan has landed the role of Captain America's sidekick James "Bucky" Barnes. The movie is slated for a July 2011 release.

Now, back to the Peggy Carter hopefuls. Eve is on the current cover of Maxim magazine looking, well, out of most guys' league. I'm told she also has a delicious-looking pictorial coming up in GQ.

As for Atwell, she may be headed for New York to star opposite Sex and the City's Mr. Big, Chris Noth, in a Broadway revival of the play Born Yesterday.

Earth's Mightiest Fansites got a chance to ask The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston a couple of questions about the casting of Chris Evans in the title role.

"Casting Captain America is really casting two roles... Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98 pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can't divulge how we're going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end," Johnston said.

In looking for the perfect actor for the role, Johnston added that the "actor playing Captain America has to embody that backstory and let it inform his understanding of his new self. One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on the his psyche. It gives the character more dimension and the actor playing him a wider range of interesting choices."

Devin Faraci from CHUD has spoken with producer Kevin Feige today at the Iron Man 2 junket and confirms the news that the Howling Commandos will encounter Captain America in the upcoming film. From the Sgt. Fury comic books, The Howling Commandos were an elite special unit of U.S. Army Rangers composed of a collection of skilled ethnic stereotypes. Led by Sergeant Nick Fury, with Robert Ralston, Dino Manellis, Gabriel Jones, Izzy Cohen and others in tow, the commandos fought their way through World War II and Vietnam.

?The characters will be there as part of the larger Marvel Universe,? said Feige. It looks like they?re really putting a lot of effort into the world-building elements of these films. I?m just crossing my fingers and hoping it?ll all make sense and feel seamless in the end.

The Gabe Jones character has been confirmed for the film, although the team may not actually be called The Howling Commandos. Faraci also speculates that the Commandos might end up interacting with the Invaders, who have also been rumored to make an appearance in the film.

^ yes, we've been aware for awhile now :) One of the rare good casting moments for this film. One thing I didn't get until now. Whats up with the shield being a work-in-progress in Iron Man 2. He had it fully finished in Iron Man 1

yeah I thought that, infact it was seen wasn't it.

Jon Favreau has revealed to MTV that Tony?s father Howard Stark will appear in Captain America:

?Yeah, because he was around then. ['Captain America'] is World War II. It wouldn?t be that same actor, probably, because he would be much younger.[Howard Stark] was starting out during that time, and [he] was involved with the war effort, much like Howard Hughes.?

    • Google reportedly set to lose two key Gemini and DeepMind researchers to Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly preparing to lose two more prominent artificial intelligence researchers, with Gemini contributors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join rival AI developer Anthropic. According to a report from Bloomberg, both researchers are viewed internally as important contributors to Google’s flagship Gemini model family. Adler worked on Google’s AI coding efforts, while Pritzel was involved in the process used to train AI systems. Neither company has publicly confirmed the moves. The report also does not say when the researchers will formally leave Google or what positions they will hold at Anthropic. Training a large AI model requires decisions covering its architecture, data preparation, distributed computing infrastructure, and post-training methods that shape how the finished system behaves. Researchers with experience operating at the scale of Gemini are consequently difficult to replace quickly. Both Adler and Pritzel have previously contributed to Google DeepMind’s scientific research as well. They are listed among the authors of the company’s work on expanding AlphaFold protein-structure predictions across entire proteomes, alongside AlphaFold researchers including John Jumper. The reported departures arrive shortly after another important change within Google’s Gemini organization. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving Google for OpenAI, after returning to the search company in 2024 through its deal with Character.AI. Shazeer is particularly well known as one of the authors of the Transformer paper, whose architecture became the foundation for most modern large language models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been recruiting recognizable figures from other leading laboratories. OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May. His move, followed by the reported recruitment of several Google researchers, suggests Anthropic is strengthening the research teams responsible for the core capabilities of future Claude models rather than concentrating solely on product and enterprise sales. The competition is complicated by the companies’ extensive commercial relationships. Anthropic competes directly with Google’s Gemini models, but it also relies on Google as an infrastructure partner. In April, Anthropic announced an expanded agreement with Google and Broadcom covering multiple gigawatts of next-generation Tensor Processing Unit capacity. • Google adds built-in computer control to Gemini 3.5 flash by Karthik Mudaliar Google has added Computer Use as a built-in tool in Gemini 3.5 Flash, giving developers a single model that can reason about a task and operate graphical interfaces across browsers, mobile devices, and desktop environments. The feature is available through the Gemini API and Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, although it remains a preview feature for now. Computer Use enables an AI agent to examine screenshots and return actions such as mouse clicks, scrolling, and keyboard input. A developer’s application must execute those actions, capture the resulting screen, and send it back to Gemini, creating a continuous loop until the task is completed. Google says the integration can be used for activities including repetitive form filling, application testing, research across multiple websites, and longer enterprise workflows. Gemini 3.5 Flash can work with browser, mobile, and desktop environments, whereas Google’s earlier standalone Computer Use model was primarily positioned around browser interaction. The main change is consolidation. Computer control was previously offered through the separate Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview model. As Neowin reported when that model was introduced, it was designed to interpret a visual interface and generate actions without requiring a website-specific API. Google later brought Computer Use to preview versions of Gemini 3 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash in January 2026. The latest release now incorporates the tool into the stable Gemini 3.5 Flash model rather than requiring developers to select a specialized model solely for interface automation. Gemini 3.5 Flash itself was announced in May as Google’s latest fast model for coding and multi-step agent workflows. It supports a one-million-token input context window and up to 65,000 output tokens, along with adjustable thinking levels that let developers trade additional reasoning for lower latency and cost. Google also added that Gemini 3.5 Flash received targeted adversarial training for computer-use scenarios. The company is also offering safeguards that can require user confirmation before sensitive or irreversible actions and automatically stop a workflow when suspected prompt injection is detected. Its developer documentation describes configurable protections for areas such as financial transactions and changes to sensitive records. Google isn't the first to bring Computer Use to its platform. Anthropic has made computer control available through Claude, while OpenAI has continued improving computer-use performance in its recent models. Microsoft has also applied the concept to business workflows, including a Computer Use capability for the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
