I don't understand the game. I just bought it for $2.50 yesterday and its like wtf. Can anyone tell me the d/l of the game. :/

Should have had an option or something to install it when you bought it. Your purchased games will be listed in the Games tab and you'll have the option to install TF2. It's a pretty big install though.

I know that. :p I meant the d/l or the "down low". xD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_fortress_2

I remember being confused on my first play. It's basically two teams that aim to shoot to kill with different characters. There are different maps therefore there will be different objectives. An example and a good beginner map is 2fort. Two teams fight it out to sneak the other team's intelligence from the enemy's base to home base. It's a variation of "capture the flag" type of gameplay.

Test all the different maps and favorite the servers you enjoy and play away!

Note: There are servers with quirks such as low gravity or roll the dice (which essentially roll a dice and get special temporary functions such as gaining invisibility or getting killed instantly).

You can either get new weapons by getting achievment mile stones (you can view them in game or your steam ID page) or you can get them by Random drops. The more you play the game and longer, the more of a chance you have to randomly be given a new item.

Also the levels mean nothing, they are an inside joke with Valve. a Level 10 Flare Gun and a Level 55 Flare gun are no different. (Also I love the flare gun, its very handy as pyro in some cases)

Also it is not unbalanced so to speak. I've played with Vanilla weapons no problem. The new weapons give both an advantage AND disadvantage. For example, If you get the new Spy Ambassador gun over the Stock Spy gun, it does 100% Critical hits in the head, but shoots SLOWER and does LESS damage than the stock gun. So no weapon or item unbalances vanilla stock weapons.

Ok I just got the game, how the heck do you get new weapons? I got a lv10 Flaregun somehow (doesn't seem very good tho) but how did I get it?

It seems pretty unbalanced with my puny weapons against these other players :p

Don't look down on your basic weapons set. For example, the pyro's shotgun is very useful in close range battles unlike the flare gun.

To switch weapons: Press the "," key and you'll have a menu pop up. Select the pyro then equip your new flare gun (by switching out your shotgun).

So in other words I just suck at this then :p

Is there any way to increase damage output at all?

It definitely takes a bit of practice :p The more you play, you'll decide what classes you like best / are best at, and will probably play though more and improve further. What is your favourite class so far? Maybe we can post some tips :)

There's some general tips and tricks here: http://www.ghacks.net/2007/10/21/team-fort...ips-and-tricks/

That balance issue you may feel isn't cause of the weapons as much as it is from the huge random damage spreads and random crits.

I really don't want Halloween to end. I'm loving the harvest_event map. The ghost in it, the exploding pumpkins and the new taunt is just absolutely awesome.

All of the servers that have harvest_event and a low ping suck for me though. I get less than 20 fps and on servers with a higher ping I'm getting 60 fps. Not sure what's up with that. Anyone have any recommended servers that have harvest_event?

Wierd. I was getting average fps on it yesterday but a friends I was playing with were complaining saying it was really bad.

How is the game scored? I was playing King of the Hill and I didn't know what I was doing. I was just running around trying to torch people, or throw bombs at them, or shoot them. I only killed like 2 people out of all this.

This is the most confusing game I have ever played.

Also where is this ghost I heard of in harvest. :p I want it to chase me like in this photo:

KOTH is won by holding the centre point for 3 minutes, you capture the centre point by standing on it for a certain period of time until it tells you that you own it.

Edit: To be honest, these are pretty standard gamemodes for multiplayer games.

I know that, but I mean like when I press tab it gives a score. I had 7 when I checked and I have been at the point longer than 7 seconds. Also, its a bit hard to get kills, whats the best group?

The person's score is different than the team score, the team gets a point for controlling the point for 3 minutes (you don't have to be on it if you own it), and the player gets points for killing the other team (or healing them if you're a medic and such)

When I started with TF2 I played Soldier, but now I mainly play Pyro. Soldier lets you get "easy" kills, while playing as a pyro effectively requires a bit more skill (running directly at somebody and holding out the flamethrower will result in your death, not theirs)

Over here one host turned all their servers into Harvest only servers, strange thing was that the first round after map change had terribly low framerate (like 10fps)

New round starts, and it went back to normal :/

Maybe I'm not giving it enough time then on a server. I got into non-harvest servers and they are just fine, so I know it isn't my computer. I wonder what is causing this then? A bug in the map?

[edit] Yes, it has to be something with that map. I created my own server and was only getting an average of 12 fps.

I've also had issues with my FPS on that map.

http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Points

That has a list of the points you get for various actions.

That site also generally has much information on TF2, you may want to spend a little bit starting at the main site (tf2wiki.net) and just clicking on a few links from the main page, it can teach you a lot about the game and even has some tips hidden away on various pages (such as the class pages, it gives tips for each class).

It is the map. On all the other official maps I get 90 FPS average, 120 (limited) max, with like 80 minimum. On harvest_event I get 90 max, 40 average, with like 30 minimum....I think all the actions going on (the ghost, pumpkins, etc) are really screwing with the map, my FPS is normal on the normal harvest map, but it drops like crazy on the event version.
