It is, it would get maybe 40-50 FPS on average at his settings on a similar PC running a 9400M, but, running it on his Mac is only producing about half that (and really, its not surprising IMO).

I wasn't even expecting 40-50 fps :p I had a 9600M and it was horrible with tf2.

I said maybe because from what I could find, that card can pull around 35 on a higher resolution than The_Decryptor is running at in TF2 on a mac running Vista with Bootcamp, so I figured it might be able to get higher at a lower resolution at best (on Windows), but Mac performance is bound to be worse if you look at other Valve releases on PC and Mac, which is why the 20 he is reporting on his Mac is not surprising to me.

One of my old cards was an 7300LE, and I swear I got better performance out of that.

...

Some of the interface actually looked far better, as it was smoother for some reason (something to do with the Mac's rendering, I'm sure). Text had some odd anomalies, though.

Yeah, Text just looks strange in every Source game, on Windows they use their own renderer but it looks like they're attempting to use Quartz on OS X.

If they are, they're doing something wrong, the metrics are off and inter-character spacing is messed up (I was typing into the Portal console, and every character I typed increased the spacing between the characters I had already typed)

Success!

The game crashed immediately on startup in OS X, but that didn't matter. As soon as I fired up the game on my PC the earbuds were there.

So with that said...

Well I had to try and see if I could even get to the menu in TF2 with my MacBook's GMA950. Nope. No earbuds for me.

As long as you attempted to launch the game, that's good enough. Go back on your Windows PC and check it out.

Last night's upgrade did improve the performance on OS X to a degree. Sound is still stuttering at times, but the graphics are now fluid.

Couple of more updates + OS X 10.6.4 and the game will be just as enjoyable on the Mac as it is on Windows.

I know this is very, very (very) late...

But am I the only one who preferred it when the blutsaughter's drawback was that it couldn't do crits, not that it didn't regenerate health as much as the standard syringe gun? I mean, I have good aim with the Medic, but whenever I'm getting shot from a distance and need to recover health, it royally sucks to be using the blutsaughter -- you're far better off to use the regular syringe gun.

The blutsaughter is probably the only weapon where I preferred it the way it was originally handled in the update instead of how Valve has since tweaked it.

The problem with pre-nerf Bluts is it was similar to the pryo axtinguisher, it was a straight upgrade from the original. With the medic, that was the case for both the Bluts AND the ubersaw.

So, Valve slightly nerfed the Bluts and buffed the syringe gun (technically, they buffed both, as the bluts heals at the same rate as the pre-buff medic, but the syringe gun has higher healing after its buff). So now the Medic has a good sidegrade primary....bluts is king if you can aim with it or are being attacked at close range, while the syringe gun is much better if you prefer to hide behind your patient and generally try to stay out of battle.

So no, I doubt you were the only one who preferred the old Bluts, as it was a straight upgrade. But now, Valve has buffed the syringe gun, so its a decent sidegrade with the Bluts.

I don't think it was a straight upgrade, as syringe crits can be very deadly very quickly given their high rate of fire. I thought it was a slight upgrade, but I don't think it was anything worthy of nerfing, personally.

The blutsaughter is definitely best if you're being attacked at close range, because you can replenish your health very quickly, but the problem I have with that is it means you probably weren't doing your job as a Medic very well. If the guy you were healing was stupid enough to lead you into a bad situation, that's your fault, and if you didn't run away before he died, that's probably again your fault. Just IMO.

Also: I wasn't aware the ubersaw has been changed any since it's been implemented... I thought it always had the decreased speed in exchange for +25% uber per kill?

They didn't nerf the Bluts, they improved the syringe gun. I agree syringe crits could be very deadly, but you shouldn't balance a weapon around random crits IMO, but I personally prefer nocrits period, which would make the old bluts a straight upgrade from the old syringe gun.

What Valve did, is they upgraded the syringe gun by increasing health regen with it. They did it by increasing the medics base regen (his base regen is now HIGHER than the pre-buff syringe gun), as an offset to make it more appealing, they then had the Bluts return to the pre-buff regen rates.

In the end, you got a Bluts that was buffed, as it could now get critical hits, and you also got a syringe gun that was buffed with higher regen. The regen rates for the Bluts did not change at all with the change.

Agreed, but if a medic does get into trouble (lets say a random crit gibs the person he is healing and leaves you alone towards the front lines), then the Bluts is definitely much better than the syringe gun, if you can aim it. I personally rarely play medic, so I have preferred the syringe gun over the bluts since the syringe gun was buffed.

It hasn't changed, my point was the medic at the time of his update got 2 upgrade weapons (that is, 2 weapons that were better than the original, one being the Ubersaw the other being Bluts), and only 1 sidegrade. All other classes at best only got 1 upgrade, 1 sidegrade, and either another somewhat crappy weapon (such as the backburner) or a decent sidegrade (such as natascha).

The reason I consider the ubersaw an upgrade is a medic should NOT be relying on his melee weapon (or even his primary for that matter, it should be pure backup), the Ubersaw, while slower in attacking, allows you to charge your uber much faster than the bonesaw. That charge increase can lead to a medic getting a hit or two on a random spy, or even defending himself with a lucky crit, and getting enough to uber himself to save his health, or decrease the time between ubers for his team, possibly allowing his team to win. Something the bonesaw cannot do at all.....a little slower swinging is no issue for a class that shouldn't rely on his attack skills.

My problem is I don't have an Intel Mac available to me at the moment. Got 3 PowerPC Macs but that is no help at all. >.>

Do you have Leopard? Actually you don't even need 10.5.8; just log onto Steam on a Mac and that's it. (from what I heard in game)

    • As a game dev, today was really depressing. They announced that Blueprints will be deprecated in UE6 to be fully replaced by their sh**ty Python-like Verse language... They also announced that 5.8 will be the last version of UE5 until UE6 comes out in MID 2029!!!! They have completely lost the plot.

    • That's not what I meant:) I like the tabs being above the URL bar, but previously the tab selection started from the top of the screen (y=0). So I could just quickly push my mouse up and done. Now I have to actually aim it just slightly below the top, because the tab is now a few pixels below the top. In other words, previously I only had to aim with my mouse horizontally, now I have to both vertically and horizontally. Super annoying.
