Seems that the update screwed up alt-tabbing. Was working perfectly well yesterday or the day before with minimal issues. Now it seems to stutter when returning back into the game from the desktop and after the 3rd alt-tab, it crashed.

The training could be valuable for newcomers... though the bots are incredibly stupid. :p

I like one fix they made in the update: if you switch classes while you're dead and hit the button to open up your character loadout, you jump to the class you're switching to, not the one you died as.

The new menu has one drawback: if you're in game, you can't exit the game in one step. The "disconnect" button replaces "exit" while you're in game.

I'm trying to use my parent's Mac to install Team Fortress 2 (a) to see what the performance is like, (b) for the earbuds, but every single time it says Steam's servers are too busy... yet they download files perfectly fine on my PC. What gives?

Separate servers for mac downloads perhaps?

The Mac version needs some performance improvements imho. Using the same settings as on Windows and on the same hardware the performance is notably lower.

One can only hope for Mac OS X 10.6.4 to bring updated graphics drivers and performance improvements.

Yeah, the drivers are terrible.

I get around 20fps in TF2 on the default (i.e. lowest) settings at 1024x768. An 9400M should be capable of more.

On moderate settings (1280x800) I'm definitely getting more than 20fps... 9400M on a 2GHz C2D.

But yeah, performance is worse than in Windows. I had hoped 10.6.4 would come out this week, with the WWDC rumors before.

The Windows version itself needs performance improvements compared to other games of its time......which likely relates to the even worse Mac performance.

Just IMO, but obviously there will be improvements over time, as Valve has done with all its games. There's a learning curve for them with the Mac, so it will take time for the performance you've come to expect from Valve games.

How do you get the earphones? Just log on a Mac?

Yep think so, only for a limited time though. I think you just get them as a drop.

Edit: Ninja'd :(

Maybe all the OSX issues are because Apple needs to do some optimization? I mean, this is sorta new territory for Mac. Other than WoW, not sure what other extremely popular games there are.

For the weekend, as long as you play on a Mac, you get them.

Cool, so I can just ask a friend to log in with my account, join a server and immediately get the drop? Or does he have to play some time? Anyone tested this?

I believe so. I'm downloading it on my parents' Mac now to see. Will know in ~6 hours.

Someone did it for me. You login with a Mac and you get it. When I got back my account from "my friend", the pyro had the earbuds equipped but I got the drop AFTER that.

OK, I just did it. You don't have to play any time. Just join a server, and it'll be in your inventory -- you don't even have to die from what I can tell, although I would recommend you do just to make sure.

Team Fortress 2 on the Mac definitely has a bit worse framerate, but it isn't absolutely horrid. It was about what I expected from an early release, and I'm sure it will improve. Some of the interface actually looked far better, as it was smoother for some reason (something to do with the Mac's rendering, I'm sure). Text had some odd anomalies, though.

well that leaves me out i dont know anybody i can trust with a apple :(

You can always go the virtual route and install a mac OS on a virtual system, then install TF2 on that and do it yourself. I personally do not care enough about the stupid looking earbuds to do so. :p

I thought A 9400M was a very weak card?

It is, it would get maybe 40-50 FPS on average at his settings on a similar PC running a 9400M, but, running it on his Mac is only producing about half that (and really, its not surprising IMO).
