Lost - Season 5

Recommended Posts

According to Lostpedia, "Ille qui nos omnes servabit" ?He who will protect/save us all.?
Sobek (also called Sebek, Sochet, Sobk, Sobki, Soknopais, and in Greek, Suchos) was the deification of crocodiles, as crocodiles were deeply feared in the nation so dependent on the Nile Ri Egyptians who worked or travelled on the Nile hoped that if they prayed to Sobek, the crocodile god, he would protect them from being attacked by crocodiles.
No, it's Sobek. He's even carrying the ankh.

No its Tawaret, why would they be praying to a god to protect them from crocodiles when there are none of the island, Tawaret is the goddess of maternity and child birth and since this ties in with women who have conceived on the island die in childbirth it all ties together.

You're wrong. That's clearly a crocodile. Look at the teeth and the slender snout.

Also, the statue is very thin, while Taweret is bulbous, indicating the carrying of a child.

It has not been confirmed who exactly it is, everyone has their own thoughts on who it might be. You may be wrong, us thinking it is Taweret may be wrong, who knows, we both might be wrong. The reason I think its Taweret is due to the nature of Taweret:

Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth.

Now, remember when Juliet was unable to deliver a baby of a person who got pregnant on the island without the mother dying? Whats the main difference between that time and the time Juliet was successful (when Dharma was still around)? When Dharma was around the statue was standing, in the time Juliet was from the statue was no longer there.

Now, this may just be some psycho theory, but a symbol for protecting pregnancy and childbirth disappears and all of a sudden pregnancy and childbirth on the island is no longer possible leads me to believe that symbol had something to do with it.

EDIT: More on Taweret:

As a protector, she often was shown with one arm resting on the sa symbol, which symbolized protection, and on occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life, or a knife, which would be used to threaten evil spirits.
The Sa symbol (google it) is very much like an ankh (the bottom half is split into 2 pieces) and she also sometimes carried an ankh, much like the statue does.

So again, it can really be either one, it hasnt been confirmed. So dont say everyone else is wrong and your right.

I think Jacob's enemy at the beginning of the episode is the smoke monster. Note the smokey grey hair he's sporting. I don't think that's a coincidence. And remember that episode where the smoke monster takes the form of Ben's daughter and tells him to do whatever Locke tells him to do, which eventually means stabbing Jacob to death?

Yep, that's the loophole all right.

The guy who wanted to kill Jacob couldnt for whatever reason maybe because of the course correcting universe or whatever Jacob wasnt meant to die by his hands, so the guy was trying to find a loophole to get Jacob killed which was get someone else to do it by taking the form of Locke and making Ben do it for him.

Exactly.

These men are gods, and they are playing a game. That's what the black rock sailing out in the ocean was about, it's the 1800's version of Flight 819. All this has happened before and will happen again. They bring people to the island somehow and let things play out. For what purpose, we don't know yet.

I was just doing a little digging and I've found a "fish connection" in the past few episodes.

Here's a story of Sobek that I found here:

Does this remind you of anyone in this episode?

33xynmf.jpg

Also, what is Ben's answer to Fake Locke's question?

Ben: I'm a Pisces.

Also, remember when Miles bought a fish taco just before he was kidnapped by Bram and crew in a van?

Can anybody else think of any other fish connections?

Interesting that bit of text mentions Horus (horace?)

Yep, it's well known that Horace is a reference to the god Horus.

Maybe you're reading too much into it. Sobek makes no sense in the over all mythology, but Tawaret certainly makes a lot of sense.

Sobek is ALSO a fertility god. Look it up.

One tale says that Sobek laid his eggs on the bank of the waters, starting the creation process. He was thus a fertility god, 'He Who Made the Herbage Green'. This explains his link to the rebirth of the deceased into the after life.

really?

from wikipedia about Sobek:

"Sobek's ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part."

yeah...that sounds nothing like LOST...

I'm sure you could troll through Egyptian history and find many, many figures that seem like they could fit into whatever you believe. The fact of the matter is that: 1. Taweret, as goddess of fertility, fits better in the island mythology, 2. She has 4 toes, the statue has 4 toes 3. Having a hippo head she has ears...the statue has ears...crocs don't have ears, 4. She is always depicted carrying 2 ankhs, the statue has 2 ankhs..Sobek has 1 ankh and a staff.

Since you all seem to think the head is the determining factor, I present this figure of Taweret

Just have to add my piece about Sobek vs Taweret:

I think you guys are too much focused on the head. I've looked at all your images, researched other images, texts, etc that tell about their physical appearances, and i'd say it's Sobek. Excluding the head, i've yet to see a reference for Taweret saying that he has a human lower body like that statue does. Taweret is a croc/hippo combo who stands upright (notice every single image has an upright animalia hind, as well as every text referencing Taweret as such). That statue is clearly a croc head with a human lower body (alla Sobek).

Taweret is also always depicted as pregnant and naked. This statue, not so much either.

Just my 2cp. Taweret's meaning may make sense for the island, but that statue doesn't.

1) I'll give you that, perhaps. But that's seemingly meaningless as you pointed out from your first thought. It all depends what the Lost writers interpret.

2) What picture are you referencing this from? I dont recall a frontal picture of that foot.

3) Sobek has ears. His head is a cross between a croc and a human and he has a human body. Just like other Egyptian gods, there are human aspects depicted on Sobek's animal head.

4) Taweret doesn't carry 2 ankhs. She carry's 1 and the other arm holds a Sa symbol (or loop), which she leans on.

Yeah there was a front view of the foot. It was seen by Sayid, Jin and Sun.

    • DriversCloud 12.1.6 by Razvan Serea With DriversCloud (formerly My-Config.com), you can explore your computer easily, safely and free. The application quickly scans your PC and identifies the hardware and software components. DriversCloud then establishes a list of the different drivers compatible with your OS and hardware. Download the drivers needed for the proper functioning of your computer. To detect your drivers, DriversCloud also displays a detailed summary of your hardware and software configuration, analyzes your BSOD, monitors in real-time your PC voltages and temperatures and lets you share your configuration online. Once the hardware components have been detected, you will be able to obtain with just a few clicks the latest drivers corresponding to the identified hardware. You can record your configuration on the site for free, and can get the corresponding URL to post the configuration to technical forums, e-mail and social networks. You can also download the detection result (the configuration) as a PDF file. To protect the user's privacy and data confidentiality, a 4-level confidentiality system was created that filters the XML marks and gives control to the user. The default level can be modified in the preferences. Using the maximum level will prevent the user from publishing his configuration and generating a corresponding PDF file. In non-connected mode, each XML configuration is stored on the server for one day (for practical reasons). However, you are given the opportunity to manually delete it. Created in 2004, and continually improved, My-Config.com has established itself on the web as a free service to PC users running Windows and Linux operating systems. The service is designed to work with the most common Internet browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).
