Lost - Season 5

I'll call Jacob's beach buddy, Esau.

- Jacob brought the Black-Rock to the Island and Richard being on the Island for a long time means Richard came from the slave ship.

- Esau hid Christian's dead body, just like John Locke's dead body from 316 plane. So, he started using Christian's body from that point on...

- The loophole, as episode said, was dark (Esau) killing light (Jacob)..

- When Jacob said "they're coming", he meant Ilana's group and Richard's group. That's why John looked at the door entrance.

I'm going to re-watch season 3 and 4 to make sure I'm not missing anything else. :D

It's funny that I just heard and read something about Esau :)

I'm not sure he meant Richards group for the They're coming...I think he meant the Oceanic 6.

Of course he meant Richard's and Ilana's group. Esau didn't see the 316er bringing John Locke's dead body... now that Richard and the Natives know John Locke is dead. They want revenge for the lies by Esau.

Esau is a more danger to the Natives than the time traveling 815ers + Miles.

I'm not sure he meant Richards group for the They're coming...I think he meant the Oceanic 6.

It could mean Widmore as well, he was in charge for a while and the fact that he was exiled by Ben, who seems to have never been Jacob's favorite, might mean he's on the side of light after all.

From this exchange, why are we assuming that Jacob is the good guy and Esau is the bad guy? In the Bible, Jacob pretty much cons Esau out of his birthright.

Esau: Morning.

Jacob: Morning.

Esau: Mind if I join you?

Jacob: Please. Want some fish?

Esau: Thank you. I just ate.

Jacob: I take it you?re here because of the ship.

Esau: I am. (beat) How did they find the island?

Jacob: You?ll have to ask them when they get here.

Esau: I don?t have to ask. You brought them here. You?re trying to prove me wrong, aren?t you?

Jacob: You are wrong.

Esau: Am I? They come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt. Always ends the same.

Jacob: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that?is just progress.

Esau: You have any idea how badly I wanna kill you?

Jacob: Yes.

Esau: One of these days, sooner or later?I?m gonna find a loophole, my friend.

Jacob: Well when you do, I?ll be right here.

Esau: Well, it was nice talking to you, Jacob.

Jacob: Nice talking to you, too.

I think that's really the long and short of it. That statue lends to both depictions, but more to Sobek (IMHO). I think some creative interpretation may have taken place by the folks over at Lost, so this may simply not be possible to answer. It could be a lore completely made up for all we know.
Agreed.....it can really be either, some of us see the statue in a different way than others. I still think it looks more like Taweret than Sobek.

http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/File:Tawretqweqwe.jpg

There's gotta be something wrong with people who look at the statue and that tapestry and don't see a crocodile.

Look at my image above, notice the similarities between the tapestry and the statue of Taweret? Same style hair, same style mouth, same style hat. Looks pretty much the same in terms of the head, maybe its a combination of both?

Because Sobek fits the best.

1) He's a fertility god.

2) I posted evidence that he catches fish with a trap, like Jacob does at the beginning of the show.

3) BECAUSE IT'S OBVIOUS IN BOTH IMAGES FROM THE SHOW THAT IT'S A CROCODILE.

Check out the link I posted above.

1) Sobek is a fertility god of LAND/CROPS.....how exactly does that fit into Lost? (Gradually, Sobek also came to symbolize the produce of the Nile and the fertility that it brought to the land; its status thus became more ambiguous.)

Taweret being a fertility goddess of pregnancy and child birth fits pretty much the entire reason Juliet was brought to the island.

2) Not every little thing means something

3) Crocodiles snouts are a lot more slender than we see in both the tapestry and the statue itself (http://www.neveryetmelted.com/wp-images/Crocodile.jpg) Look at the picture I posted above, the mouth looks a LOT more similar to Tawerets, not Sobek.

Also: http://www.scifiscoop.com/news/michael-eme...ur-toed-statue/

Michael Emerson (aka Benjamin Linus) has reinforced what many Lost addicts have speculated for a long time - that the statue is that of the three fingered, pregnant hippopotamus headed Egyptian Goddess Taweret.

“She’s Taweret, the goddess of childbirth,” Emerson says. “That dovetails in pretty well with our themes, wouldn’t you say?”

We have more evidence that the statue is Taweret than we do that its Sobek......therefore I still say its Taweret.

Certainly not all images will be identical but some themes are pretty consistent:

Sobek typically has a tall ornate headdress, our statue and the tapestry does not.

Taweret has a short blocky headdress, like our statue and tapestry.

Sobek is almost always carrying a staff, our statue and tapestry does not.

They both have long snouts, usually with sharp teeth.

A hippo, that Taweret is based around has four toes.

Taweret is usually fat though, and our statue is not - but the tapestry is kinda stout.

I'm leaning toward it not being Sobek.

1) I just found lots of images with sobek having a similar headdress. *shrugs* Simple google search can do just the same.

2) Well if we're going to play the "sometimes this happens" game, i see lots of pictures with Taweret having a much longer headdress than what the island statue has. Therefore, you must be wrong.

3) Taweret is typically seen carrying a Sa symbol. I dont see the island statue carrying that.

4) true

5) Taweret also does not, nor have i ever seen him depicted as having, a human lower body like the island statue has. He's an upright walking animal. By the way, how many toes does Sobek have?

6) Stretching...

lets add another, shall we?

7) Clothing anyone? I'd love to see a picture of Taweret with clothes, because i sure cant find any. Taweret, as far as i can see and have read, is always naked. Island statue seems to have lots of articles of clothing.

Regardless, your speculation is as good as mine. We can argue till the cows come home, but neither of us can actually say for sure. Fact that a cast member said it's Taweret makes me think you're right, as he should have some kind of insight on the issue, but at first glance, without that knowledge, i would gladly argue my points.

Few things I'm aware now after reading some boards.

1 ) Jacob touched all of our losties (kate, swayer, sayid, locke, sun, jin, jack and hugo) Although it's not very very clear with sayid, the camera somehow really focuses on the moment where he gives the pen to swayer and the candybar to jack. But he touches them all.

2) Jacob says the "it's your choice" twice (to hugo and to ben). I guess that has to do with the loophole thing. The dead have talked to our losties before (ana lucia, etc) but can we be really sure that was jacob and not esau? Perhaps the only thing esau can't do is tell them right away to kill someone, or to jill jacob. Maybe the one that said "Help me" in the cabin was not jacob, but esau. Maybe that's when he found out that ben had never talked to jacob? Meaning that's when he thought of ben having a reason to really kill jacob by his own choice?

what you mean the statue has been explained?

did they explain what the hell is a statue doing on the island? a statue that size? who the hell built it? when was it built?

Due to all the Egyptian mythology theme going on the Island, isn't it obvious? The people who built all the underground passage ways, temples, etc. made the statue too. The statue was built to worship Taweret, so they can reproduce on the Island. Since that time, however, there has been fertility issues as Richard explained to Locke in Season 3, episode 9.

Jacob is trying to prove Esau wrong; that people can live peacefully on the Island. But, Esau is right... same pattern is constantly being repeated. So, Jacob constantly brings people to the Island, which is evident when he said,

Almost like the Battlestar Galactica theme with Cylons, Humans and Centrions.

Other Questions:

1) Who is Yacob and why is he on the island?

2) Who is Esau and why is he on the island?

3) Why is Esau a smoke monster?

4) What is the Egyptian connection/obsession?

5) A Richard back story; why was he made immortal? A punishment perhaps?

6) Why did they show so many butt shots of Kate in this last ep?

Any other unanswered questions?

    • Samsung is shutting down yet another app used by millions by David Uzondu Samsung has announced that it is shutting down Samsung Max, its VPN service used by more than 50 million people, effective today. Samsung Max VPN, if you don't know, was an Android app born on February 23, 2018, out of the ashes of Opera Max, a very popular data-saving VPN that Opera had discontinued the previous year. Samsung bought the discontinued service, rebranded it, and added a native Samsung UI to fit the Galaxy ecosystem. The app could do things like compress images, help you manage background data on a per-app basis, reduce video data consumption, shrink music files, optimize webpages, block advertisement trackers in incognito mode, and encrypt your internet traffic on public Wi-Fi networks. Image via SammyGuru If you open the app now, you'd be greeted by a shutdown banner warning that all VPN, data saving, and privacy services stopped functioning on June 15, 2026. The creators failed to provide a reason for the shutdown, instead publishing a farewell note that read: "Thank you for being with us over the years. Your support and activity truly meant a lot to us and helped shape this app into what it became." This same message appears on the Google Play Store listing for the app as well. Max VPN is the latest service from Samsung to join the list of discontinued applications from the company. Just two months ago, the Korean tech giant announced that it is completely shutting down Samsung Messages, forcing millions of users to migrate to Google Messages by next month. The only devices that the shutdown won't affect are older smartphones running Android 11 or lower. Some of the features of Google Messages that Samsung hopes will entice users include AI-powered scam detection to block suspicious links, integrated Gemini AI tools to generate quick replies, custom chat bubbles, and universal RCS compatibility for sharing high-quality media with iOS users. The platform also offers seamless syncing across tablets and smartwatches. In addition to that, users gain access to message scheduling, smart classification, and automated category sorting. • 1. Define "better". 2. It's still more expensive than equivalent PCs so... And there is not one Windows platform. This is the mistake ALL Apple oriented people make. Apple is one OEM. You could reasonably compare them to one PC OEM, say Dell or HP. But you can't compare them to ALL PC OEMs. Case in point, Apple has NO touch screen MacBooks. No tablet Macs. There are no rugged Macs. The variety of PC OEM design is insane. With Apple, you have... Apple. The problem is that you're starting with Apple as the definition of "good" then filtering out anything that isn't close to an existing Apple product, then trying to homogenise all of those left into a fictional product line and then ignore any innovations to create a minimal feature subset so you can say "See! Apple better!" PS: I was an Apple dev for 17 years and helped develop MacInTalk and disability solutions for Apple, and worked on Microsoft Office for MacOS - and I have several Macs and MacBooks - so tread very carefully.
    • Major Xbox layoffs may claim South of Midnight developer Compulsion entirely by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft has been making major changes in its gaming wing Xbox for a few months now, including the appointment of a new CEO, a large number of leadership changes, and strategy shifts. However, the company is seemingly also looking at initiating a major layoffs wave at Xbox and perhaps even a studio closure. The new report lands from Kotaku, Xbox first-party developer Compulsion Games is being shuttered soon by Microsoft. For those unfamiliar with the studio, it's the team behind Contrast (2013), We Happy Few (2018), and South of Midnight (2025). Its latest game was quite well received, even winning a Peabody Award for its writing. It even received a 9/10 in Neowin's own review, highlighting its engaging storyline, gorgeous world, and curious characters. The studio joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018, just as Microsoft announced it is acquiring Playground Games, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. Despite recent listings for new staff roles, according to the new report, Compulsion Games is being closed entirely, with over 90 staff being let go. Kotaku also added that the studio's leadership is in negotiations with Microsoft about this decision, but no official details have been revealed yet. The report lands just as two senior managers of Xbox leave their posts at Microsoft Gaming. Head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan and chief of staff Louise O'Connor originally began their journey in Rare and have been a part of Xbox for over two decades. Dunkan has been responsible for games like Kinect Sports and Sea of Thieves, while O'Connor was primarily working on Rare's Everwild project before its cancelation. If this report about the studio shutdown is accurate, this may just be the start of a major new layoffs wave at Xbox Game Studios. There are also rumors of Arkane Studios being heavily affected. As always, take all these reports with a grain of salt until something official materializes from Microsoft or the studios.
    • The flaw with this analysis is that this laptop has a cellphone CPU in it. In the Intel world, that would be an N150 and those are everywhere, even in low end laptops. You can get an N150 based NUC with 16GB RAM and 256GB-512GB SSD... NOT soldered in... for < $500 Canadian (around US$360). The problem is two fold: tech bloggers/writers on most tech site (like this one, ironically) overvalue Apple and apparently aren't in the same earnings class as most regular people. As a result, we get breathless articles about how everyone needs a folding phone when most people just cannot afford one... or really need one. And we get Apple used as the baseline metric regardless of whether that comparison makes any sense. If Dell or HP released a retail laptop with a cellphone motherboard, you'd be all over them for doing that - but Apple does it and it's genius. I see articles suggesting what Samsung - a company that basically started the foldable phone market and has built them for eight years - needs to do to compete with Apple's unreleased, unspecced and unseen folding phone. Sorry, no - if the Neo (really creative name there BTW - still, better than the Go, the other "creative" product name everyone's using) encourages PC makers to make cellphone laptops using lower end ARM processors, we all lose. It's a step backwards and a capitulation to the fact that semiconductor makers and computer OEMs (and tech bloggers) have totally lost the plot.
