  1. 1. Who should lead on Destiny?

One thing I didn't get was why they mentioned needing to dispose of the senator's body. It's trapped in a shuttle with a door that doesn't open. How exactly are they going to get to it?

Either they figure out how to fix the shields or find EVA suits.

Or he'll somehow come back to life.

The ship pre-dates Atlantis, so most likely the ship pre-dates ZPM's. I don't really see a problem with the ship taking control of things. It was designed for deep space with no crew, so it must have some form of AI, but who is to say that the ship is doing that? For all we know, one of the ancients which have ascended could be controlling it to keep the crew alive *shrugs*

all far too convenient, this plot device of the ship knowing what to do and saving them all could get very boring very quickly..

Until they manage to gain access to the main systems and all of a sudden the ship no longer takes control anymore.

That plot problem solved.

Now...those communication stones. THEY are a huge plot problem. Why haven't McKay and Carter been brought in to fix things?

Thats what I was wondering. It looks like they will solve things without them though. I looked through IMDB and Carter isn't in any more episodes this season (that we know of) and neither is McKay.

I did find out that Daniel Jackson is in two more episodes called Human (episode 14) and Subversion (episode 18)

good point

I don't think the ship predates Atlantis. from what we know this ship is at most 1 million years old unless somehow they changed their estimate of the age of the ship and I missed it, whereas we know Atlantis is at least several million years old. I personally think that it was after the launch of this ship that they developed ZPM and hyperdrive technology and since they still inhabited Atlantis they were able to upgrade it with the new technology.

When they first showed Atlantis leaving Earth on the first episode of Atlantis, I don't remember it ever actually going into hyperspace, it could have used the same FTL technology that this ship uses which would indicate they hadn't developed the technology until they were in the Pegasus galaxy.

To be honest I'd say FTL in the destiny's case is a safety measure, you do not just go jumping all over the shop with hyperspace; you could come out anywhere especially without knowing the region of space you're heading in to. It could have been launched after the creation of hyperspace travel and they still wouldn't have used it as the primary source of long range propulsion, it may actually even have a hyper drive as a secondary.

I've said it to enough people in IRC but I'm betting it's an Alcubierre Drive and that would take the power of a zpm or something very powerful to get along. With a ftl drive that pulls you out of normal space you don't deal with time dilation and can still navigate the ship properly because you can see where you are going, as opposed to a "blind jump" with ftl.

I think your actually incorrect here, I am pretty sure in episode 4 (I may have to re-watch tonight to confirm) that Dr. Rush says Destiny pre-dates Atlantis. We already know from that episode that none of the technology onboard requires the Ancient Gene to work and thats a pretty clear indication for me that it 'must' pre-date the city. We have to remember that the Destiny was an experiment by the Ancients, that they either couldn't complete (Ascension?) or felt there was no need in completing, and this is also why there are 9 chevrons on the SG, for me, another indication it pre-dates Atlantis (i actually love the stargates in Universe personally)

Also, and I can't go back through to find to quote, but at least we now know how they can shower even with a water shortage...the showers don't use water...pretty handy that, don't you think? ;)

But thats only my opinion, until we find out the actual dates we won't know :)

RUSH: The ship detected a Stargate on a planet within range that may have what we need.

YOUNG: What? Why the hell are there even Stargates out here?

RUSH: The Ancients sent out a number of unmanned ships ahead of this one. They're programmed to gather data, resources, then manufacture Stargates and deposit them on habitable worlds. Any relevant information is relayed back here to help plot the course.

I do like the new series but does anyone else feel that the ninth chevron is a bit of a let down?

It requires massive amounts of power to dial far away mobile phones Stargates. And there's only one (that we know of).

I wonder if a 9th chevron be used within a single galaxy (e.g., the milky way), so placing a gate on the Tau'ri ships would allow them to "call" each other half way across the galaxy. Assuming they solved the power issues

Ah so thats who it is. In Episode 18 they used the stones to bring a 'genius' from Earth to help them solve problems on Destiny. I had my fingers crossed for McKay as last I remember Atlantis was still on Earth unless this is after the Atlantis movie whenever that takes place.

Daniel was one of my favourite characters so I'll be glad to see him come. He would have been really good on Atlantis if they had let him jump shows.

And Destiny is older than Atlantis. They said so in the first few episodes. So it won't use any technology from Atlantis. No ZPM's to the rescue. I'd think the design alone would have been obvious. It's clearly very rugged and worn. Even Earth's ships were cleaner and more sophisticated. This ship is ghetto ;) by design that is.

I'm curious if they ever introduce us to its AI. Clearly it has some form of AI, here's hoping its a talking ship, helllo Night Flyer :D

Hey I was a Catholic School choir boy and I liked that scene :shifty:

There you go

The ship will deploy the Ancient Big Giant Scoop? and grab enough energy to maintain the crew for the time being. Are there even ZPMs on the Destiny? It's possible the ship predates that technology.

Yes, that's what I thought as well... haven't seen a single one.

Did Stargate Universe's Women Get Lost In The Wrong Universe?

The men of Stargate Universe have been busy punching, exploring and saving lives using complicated math. Meanwhile the womenfolk have cried, drank, got naked, and been used up sexually. Is SGU getting a little sexist? Fans certainly think so.

Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan pointed out this weekend all the unhappy SGU fans at Television Without Pity saying that SGU is getting fairly sexist with their female characters...

The thing that continues to astound me is that this is the same network which has seen its best ratings ever for Warehouse [13], a show which appeals to a broader set of demos, particularly bringing in new female viewership to the network & yet can't get its head around the fact that those same female viewers are also the most potentially likely to be offended by SGU.

They seemed astounded that women watched BSG and loved the female demo's for Warehouse 13 and yet for SGU we have - boob shots and shower shots and so far every women seems to be defined in some way by a male, either through sex in a closet, or needing some guy for comfort or apparently a prior affair . Oh except for Ming Na, our lesbian character who we've only briefly seen acting like a bitch before she left again. There should have been or should be a strong female character in every single episode and virtually all scenes but we get Eli and Rush and Young and Scott and of course dear, helpless Chloe. Honestly, in a weird way SGU seems very 'dated' in it's viewpoints and set ups for the female characters; I almost feel like I'm watching scifi from the 70's.

The message board is flooded with negative opinions about the practically mute female cast aboard the Destiny. Ming-Na's much-hyped openly lesbian character has all but said three words along with equally quiet T.J., while the hapless Senator's daughter wanders about the ship never far from the crook of a protective man's arm, even though she totes doesn't need it.

To be honest I agree and disagree. The men themselves, while getting a lot more screen time are horribly stereotyped. There's the quiet stern one, the nerd, the hot adventurous white guy, angry black guy, and the jock. Do we really want the women getting more screen time, if they will only be subjected to this type of stereotyping?

But, the series still has hope. Even though I was loathe to see this weeks big moment for the one female character who's had more than 5 lines, the Senator's daughter, wound up with her up in a shower while the leering nerd PG-ly panted nearby. Although this whole scene was annoying as hell, "hmmm we need to give the women something to do, let's make her take her clothes off and the nerd go bananas!" there were little glimmers of hope in this scene.

Eli was being forced to interact with people, not just blurt out unfunny zingers for no reason. It was there and a few other flutters, where this new series shows promise. Too bad it was sandwiched between two very annoying characters ? the Senator's daughter who whines constantly and needs to be surrounded by men at all time, even while showering, and the "other one" soldier lady who was apparently put on screen for gratuitous "I have large breasts" camera angles [anyone else catch that moment?]. In fact I've even forgotten this character's name, I honestly know her as the soldier with larger than average boobs, which makes me sad inside.

But Eli's face actually worked for a few seconds, and it's glimmers that keep me clinging on to this series that still doesn't know how to mesh these two worlds together. I'm hoping that characters that have all but been silent, like the blonde medic TJ, will give the women something else to do. Which may not be the case, since the show is all too happy to point out, continually, that she is a PARAMEDIC not a REAL Doctor, which by now sounds less like "these people are ill equipped" and more like "she is ill equipped" when repeated over and over. Please note that none of the other main characters are ever really subjected to this constant "you're not good enough" attention that she likes to lump on herself. Why? We don't know yet, but it's starting to grate. And let's hope SGU brings TJ and Ming-Na out to do, well hell, something.

Yea I guess they have a point. Carter/Tela/Weir were all pretty strong female roles. Nothing really so far in SGU. Although the doc chick seems like she could pick up the throne as the strong female lead. She at least has some aggression to take out. All others seem pretty laid back.

I don't really care. We all know woman are perfectly capable of doing everything a man can do, except, math, chess, running, jumping, lifting stuff, fixing things, making money, hockey, surfing, driving, making decisions, being tall, taking out the garbage, tipping, fishing, being funny (on purpose), reading a map, listening to good bands, writing, running the country or inventing anything important. :)

..there might be some sarcasm in that post.

    • But the reality is it will work for people's needs, and they don't care about the technology that makes it. Clearly not everyone's needs, but that low end space where personal laptops were only used to type emails, watch content and browse websites, but they didn't want to do that on a small screen device. Heck, writing that out I can now see the connection and reason it'll do so well. Apple is about experience. If the experience is bad, they don't release it. Low end Windows laptop manufacturers up until this point have not taken that into consideration ever before, so slow laggy usage with brittle slimey plastic shells were common. I hope that the low end space at least creates better physical products that last a bit longer, and if Microsoft get their act together, they could also have a solid OS on such low end hardware that would actually make the experience work for what the hardware was intended for. The fact that the CPU is a "cellphone", sorry mobile phone processor is irrelevant. It's about the experience, and so far, that sounds quite solid.
    • Hello, Bonjour is Apple's implementation of a multicast-DNS service, which allows devices running Apple's software and/or hardware to find each other on your local network.  I believe the Windows version was last updated around 2010. If you do not need it, you can stop and disable the Bonjour service in the Services Control Manager (filename: SERVICES.MSC).  Once you have done that, the operating system will no longer attempt to load the service. • This AMD RX 9070 16GB GPU that performs close to Nvidia 5070 is under $600 by Sayan Sen With the memory shortage that's prevalent nowadays, discounts are super-hard to get. As such we post good deals whenever they pop up. Recently, we covered a few great discounts on SSDs wherein you can get a 4TB TeamGroup NVMe PCIe Gen4 drive for just $400 thanks to a special coupon. If you want a faster product but don't need all that capacity, you can also opt for Samsung's 990 PRO 2TB that is on sale for its lowest price in over three months. Let's say though that you are on the hunt for a 1440p gaming card. In that case AMD's RX 9070 non-XT can help, and with its 16GB VRAM, you can also run AI models locally without worrying about bottlenecking (check out our recent 9070 GRE reviews for gaming and productivity to get an idea). The PowerColor Reaper variant of the RX 9070 is currently on sale for just $580 which is a very good price in the current state of affairs (purchase link under the specs table down below). The Reaper cooler on this 9070 uses a triple‑fan design with ring‑blade fans, paired with premium dual ball bearings to extend lifespan and reduce friction. "Intelligent" fan control allows the fans to remain idle at lower temperatures, only spinning up when the GPU is under load. A nickel‑plated copper base makes direct contact with both the GPU and memory modules, helping to spread heat evenly. PowerColor also applies Honeywell PTM7950 phase‑change thermal interface material (TIM), which fills microscopic gaps between the die and heatsink for more efficient thermal transfer. The fan shroud is shorter in height as the firm has made it such that it can be used in certain SFF (small form factor) cases. The technical specifications of the Reaper RX 9070 are given in the table below: Specification Value Stream Processors 3584 Units Video Memory 16GB GDDR6 Memory Speed 20.0 Gbps Memory Interface 256-bit Engine Clock Game Clock: up to 2070 MHz Boost Clock: up to 2520 MHz Bus Standard PCI Express 5.0 x16 Display Connectors 1 x HDMI 2.1b, 3 x DisplayPort 2.1a Maximum Resolution DisplayPort: 7680 × 4320 HDMI: 7680 × 4320 Board Dimensions 289mm × 111mm × 41mm 304mm × 127mm × 42mm (with bracket) Slot 2 Minimum System Power Requirement 600W Power Connectors Two 8-pin PCI Express Get the PowerColor Reaper RX 9070 at the links below (you get only a 90-day warranty on Woot): PowerColor Reaper Radeon RX 9070 16GB Graphics Card (RX9070 16G-A): $579.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $700) PowerColor Reaper Radeon RX 9070 16GB Graphics Card (RX9070 16G-A): $559.99 (Sold and Shipped by Woot US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Are they marketed as an entry into astronomy or astrophotography? I do astrophotography. With big rigs, lots of computers, cables and headaches. I love it. And by learning this ridiculously complex hobby, I’ve learned about the objects I’m shooting. Astronomy followed from photography.
    • Microsoft confirms Recycle Bin bug across all versions of Windows by Usama Jawad A couple of days ago, we reported that the latest Patch Tuesday update has seemingly resulted in a lot of issues for many users, including OneDrive and Dropbox access problems, BitLocker recovery lockouts, and BSODs. Although Microsoft is yet to acknowledge these bugs, it has confirmed another, relatively smaller issue across all supported versions of Windows. In an update on its Windows Release Health Dashboard, Microsoft has confirmed that after installing June's Patch Tuesday update (KB5094126), you'll experience unexpected behavior when leveraging Recycle Bin. Basically, when you attempt to delete an item from the Recycle Bin, the confirm dialog will show you the internal file name of that content rather than the actual name. For example, the file may be named abc.png, but the confirm dialog will ask if you're sure that you want to permanently delete $Rxxxxx.png from the Recycle Bin. This is pretty much it for the scope of the bug itself; it just displays the wrong name in the confirm dialog. The correct name will be shown in the list view of the Recycle Bin and if you restore the file, it will return with the correct name as well. This issue affects pretty much all supported versions of Windows client and server, including: Client: Windows 11, version 26H1; Windows 11, version 25H2; Windows 11, version 24H2; Windows 11, version 23H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 Server: Windows Server 2025; Windows Server 2022; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012 R2; Windows Server 2012 As things currently stand, Microsoft is working on a concrete solution that will be released in a "future" Windows update. It remains to be seen if the firm will wait till the next Patch Tuesday or roll out an out-of-band (OOB) fix. The good news is that commercial customers can deploy a workaround right now, but they will have to reach out to Microsoft Support for Business for additional details.
