Whats wrong with ripping off BSG? That was one of the seminal, greatest tv shows ever created - we all loved it, it worked and it was handled well. Common sense says you take what works and use it as an influence!

So by that logic - to those people who say that "SGU RIPS OFF BSG!" what you are really saying is you are ****ed because SGU is on par with a show of the calibre of BSG. While I disagree with that idea since I don't believe we're nowhere near the core of what SGU is going to follow, I do like that the writers of SGU have taken the main ideas of BSG and made it their own show. Nothing wrong with that - and besides, BSG was heavily influenced (because its INFLUENCED not RIPPED OFF we're talking here) by Star Wars, 2001: Space Odyssey, and Blade Runner...did we complain then? Hell no!

I say, sit back and enjoy where SGU is going, because if the producers were to really listen then we'd get a copy of SG1 which quite frankly would be boring as ****.

I'm still waiting for this amazing idea to take the Stargate franchise in btw.

altlantis was basically the same as sg1, exploring other worlds through the gate, that wasn't boring though. SGU on the other hand is boring, I suppose the reason I can't stand this show is I couldn't stand BSG. I like my sci-fi shows exciting and amusing at times, not drama, drama...drama.

Unfortuently what I have seen so far....cannot be unseen.

The thing is BSG while it had Drama, and way to much of it halfway through, it also had awesome space combat scenes, and science fiction stuff.

SGU has Drama, Dram more drama, and people walking on planets that look just like earth before they get back on ship at the last second. There's zero reason for BSG to be a SciFi show, as opposed to a show about a group of people stuck on an unknown island or something.

I had big hopes for SGU, but they crushed them all when my fears of a silly Lost in space/voyager clone was confrirmed.

anyway, as to where they could have taken it, well to start with there was never any need for the universe part, our galaxy is big enough that in the hundreds of thousands of years the ship has been traveling, it would have even been able to map and seed all the habitable planets in our own milky way. They should have stayed here but done the same routine of being on an ancient seeding ship on the other side of the galaxy, and then introduced a few local aliens, Friends, enemies, good guys, bad guys. and made it into a proper SciFi

Well I like the drama-ry aspect to SGU. Don't get me wrong, I loved SG1 and SGA (and still do), but after being the longest continually-running sci-fi show ever and it's incredibly similar spin-off, it was time for something new.

If anything kills this show, it's not the slight genre shift, it's this damn mid-season break.

Well, at least in SGU the planets don't all look like a certain dirt pit and forest in British Columbia, unlike all the planets in SG-1 and SGA.

having been a fan of SG1 and SGA for years and years i was loving the idea when SGU came along as i hated the idea of loosing such a great show as SG...

after watching SGU till now i am now giving up :(!

i really didnt want this to happen but for me SGU is not SG, its a drama and a bad one at that, where they refer to space sometimes - you could remove the space aspect and it wouldnt be that different.

the characters and the idea work on paper, they are intresting and complex, peoblem is they never do anything apart from distrust each other.... whats the point of being on a ship that stopps at un charted planets in a far far away place if your not going to use the gate/ship as a portal for stories? they might as well just live in an appartment in LA that they cant escape from....

as a fan i wanted to love SGU - i'll no longer be watching - FAIL! :(

I admit, they are taking the whole drama aspect a little too far. I'm a fan of SG-1 and SGA as well and I want to see more 'Sci-Fi'. I want to see them going to more planets, discovering new technology, and meeting new aliens.

they did meet some aliens, the flying bug things... i have a feeling they were just a token to keep the people who want aliens/tech and planets hoping....

That seemed awfully similar to the flying lights in sg1 & atlantis that flew at people and attacked them. I can't believe that and those bugs (also like those bugs in atlantis) are the only things they've managed to come up with.

Ever seen a plane go through a cloud, it creates spiral whisps in the clouds because of the jet engine.

Actually, the jet engine does not cause this effect.

It is caused by higher pressure air on the underside of the wing rushing up to equalise the lower pressure air on the upper side of the wing. This occurs at the wing tip and results in significant induced drag - this can be minimised by using upturned "winglets" at the wingtip. Lookup wingtip vortices for more....

Probably too much information there! ANYWAY back on topic...

I love this show and really enjoy the added drama and character development. This also has the added benefit that my girlfriend also enjoys (to an extent) watching it with me without moaning that I'm watching another "boring" sci-fi!

The biggest problem with the series is that there is no excitement. The problems they face are boring. The drama is weak and unfortunately plentiful. Nothing of interest is happening.

If they wanted a "grittier" series they could have just upped the seriousness and realism of warfare but instead we get crybabies in space.

Well, it gets more serious in the 2nd half of the season at least.

Btw, you guys should listen to the podcasts from Gateworld for the episodes, especially Time. Some really interesting things they bring up which I didn't even think about when I watched it. :D

That's because girls like soaps.

i will have to take a look at the podcasts i did not know they were doing them so i will give them a listen.

Good :)

Just be aware they contain spoilers for episodes that haven't aired sometimes, not much but it may be a problem for some.

for me, if i need to watch/ listen to a pod cast to enjoy a show, the show is too weak to stand alone...

they have gone on record to say that if people want anything remotley SG this season they will be dissapointed...

on the off chance - if anything good does happen, like a good plot, cool tech or aliens etc then please post so i can start watching again... atm i have a feeling that SGU wont get more than 2 seasons :(

They explained that in the show, the Goa'uld picked planets that closely resembled earth when they seeded other planets with humans from earth so it would match up.
