Welcome to Neowin 5

My constructive feedback:

1. Make it wider.

2. Replace the dropdown arrows beside 'control panel', 'main', and 'irc'.

3. It's too dark and contrasting. Use lighter shades of blue.

4. 'Neowin' in 'Neowin.net' looks stretched vertically.

5. Try rounding off the top right and left corners a bit more.

6. The divide between news items is too subtle when compared to the rest of the contrasting design.

7. There's no contributor or comment count for news items.

As I mentioned earlier in the deluge, is there going to be an option to have the forum posts updated real time again on the front page like the last design, that was invaluable to me. Currently I have to refresh the whole page just to get recent posts :(

OK, shall we remove "recent forum posts" on the right and place the ad there then? Where else do you think the square ad should go? It doesn't distort the content it wraps around it

I say get rid of it or allow the page to scale to people browsers. It's simply far too big. The fact that the vertical google one to the right is also level with it means your losing about 50% of the page width where that center ad is. ATM it's literally the size of 2.f of the news post alongside it. It wouldnt be so bad if the page was making use of the real estate of a wide screen display but it's taking up a huge amount of a column many people think is already too small.

You could always put those two news and content filters back to the top left as they were in v4 and put the ad at the right above the "around the web" where those content filters and forum links are now. It'd be out of the way at least but still ultimatly there.

I just really think your hurting yourself in regards to this. Theres been a deliberate move to cut back on how much text is shown in each article and then in amongst it is a huge animated ad. It's counter productive to the goal of getting people interested in the content there as the ad takes your attention right away from the content which makes it harder to get to the stage where you want to read anything else. All in all I'm finding it harder to focus on the front page content than with version 4, not easier. It's ok the times the ad is static, but about 50% of them are moving about every 2 seconds. The huge boarders on the site is only serving to further narrow your eyesight to the very centre of the screen and thus past the news posts themselves.

edit: I realise you need to make money here, but if you sacrifice useability your going to scare users away. Also I would really be interested in why the fixed width approach was taken and what benefit it actually offers.

I can't believe none of neowin's staff agrees that having an ad in the middle of the website is a bad idea.

Neowin is a content-oriented website, as such the most used features should be most prominent. Forums + news is why 95% of the people come here, so why does this update reduce the space for news and pushes forums to the side?

Anyone who understands a bit of design will tell you that you want to put important things in the center, not ads!!!

Can't you see that your idea of the new design is flawed? why do you either ignore posts here or refuse to admit it can be improved? I'm sure you guys work hard to provide us with this new skin, almost everyone agrees that the colors look nice, but limiting functionality because it interferes with your "idea for the theme" is not the stance you should be taking.

Refusing to give the users the possibility of going back to the older design when so many people don't like this new one as it stands is also a step in the wrong direction.

I'd like to ask you guys to listen to what so many people here are saying and perhaps make a few changes to keep your userbase happy :)

I don't like how each article now only gets a line or two on the main pages, where as before they would get a paragraph or two. Give back the page realestate to the articles, and give them more room for their content.

The old color scheme was better, the new navy blue menus and headers do not go well with the matte blue backgrounds.

The new 'recent forum posts' list is worse than before. Not only is its placement on the page a little strange, but the number of items in the list was reduced to 6, and it doesn't update automatically anymore. The new one is a 100% downgrade IMO.

Also, whenever I mouseover the "Main" button in the navbar, the drop down menu appears but never goes away. It only disappears after I refresh the entire page. (IE7)

The new style is too crowded and too similar to sooooo many other news feed pages.

I don't like the narrow columns. I liked the old style because all the info was so easily readable. I just scrolled down the page and opened the items I was interested in a new tab.

Actually it is distorted since you remove the post icons.

Also for the record, I'd prefer no square ad at all as I'm a subscriber but thats an entirely different topic of conversation. Failing that I'd prefer it in the right hand column. But that's just me.

I don't like how each article now only gets a line or two on the main pages, where as before they would get a paragraph or two.

Exactly. ATM theres an article on the front page where not even a whole sentence is able to be displayed with the limited amount of text showing. I mean theres cutting it back and theres cutting it back.

It was never supposed to be the regular subscriber package. The idea was put out for a higher-costing subscriber package that removed ads, and as far as I know that idea is still on the table, it just hasn't been worked out yet.

What I don't understand is why people complain about ads in the first place. If they weren't there, we wouldn't be here either. They're not hurting you by being there. All you have to do is ignore them, which is extremely easy if you ask me. It's not like we have sound-enabled ads or anything.

I NEVER complained about the ads until now.

the flash ad in the middle of the page is just unacceptable.

As I said before, it's WAY better than the intellitxt ads.

I don't see how anyone (who doesn't use an adblocker) could disagree.

I have a secret feeling that the reason the square ad is "unacceptable" to so many people is that it doesn't collapse when using an adblocker. ;)

I have neowin whitelisted I see all the ads.

I'd rather have the intellitext ads and I hated those too.

I think the reason it's annoying to most people is it's in the middle of the page!

Can I just ask what the thought process was behind the news section menu.

Apple -> Microsoft -> Linux, doesn't seem right to me, its not either alphabetical, or Microsoft first (as this was originally a Microsoft centric site).

It may seem a little pedantic, but it just confuses me...

I agree....

I have a secret feeling that the reason the square ad is "unacceptable" to so many people is that it doesn't collapse when using an adblocker. ;)

WRONG! :)

I have never used an adblocker ever. I have never really noticed the ads on Neowin, nor found them irritating in any way, but suddenly there is a big square block, diverting my attention away from the top news artical on the site... i predict it will stear new users away from the site, rather than bring new users.

Well actually anything can be blocked

What is irksome is actually the placement of the advert.

It was supposed the subscriber package. I guess not, after all. I won't be renewing if ads aren't removed for subscribers

Is it just me, or is the Neowin site/forums slower today? Its my internet, damn!

Is there a reason why the front page 'recent forum posts' don't auto cycle/refresh anymore? I really liked that :(

Well, I am a subscriber apparently, yet there are 2 HUGE banner ads on the front page. As for the cycling new posts... OH NOZE! UR RIGHT! That was the best part of the web page! I will not live without my new posts!!!! Fix it now - or else!

Well actually anything can be blocked

What is irksome is actually the placement of the advert.

How did you do it! Thats amazing!

Im not telling anyone, I love Neowin & i appreciate that it has adverts on it because of which it provides us a much more richer & fuller internet experience . Go Neowin

I know how you did it, but dont do it myself.

I wont be going to the front page any long though... ill be heading straight for the forums in future.

Sadly enough - Same. :/

I just hope to god that the forum themes are changeable as always. This is really sad, you know. Neowin was my #1 source of news, yet now I find myself with something that's nor easy to look at, or has any content. I miss the old Neowin very dearly. I hope a compromise eventually comes.

At the moment, the Latest Community Activity is just about the most useful thing on the main page, yet sadly it doesn't even work. I don't see the point in renewing my subscription if I'm going to be rewarded with this.

While there are examples of other fixed width websites, well known websites, that doesn't really mean much to me ... I'm at 1920x1200 and all I see is wasted space and cramped up text

I took a look at ars technia and the first thing i noticed is that the spaces/columns are much more defined... Neowin basically has thin blue lines separating things, which really isn't doing a great job... On Neowin, everything looks blended together into a pot of mashed information

I'm not a web designer or anything, I'm simply a user that views this site a lot. Currently I'm using the greasemonkey scripts to make this site take up more of my screen space, and it makes a remarkable difference...

I guess for me... Neowin was unique, that's why it was my homepage, but now in this pursuit for god knows what, I feel it has lost its uniqueness... hopefully the forums survive this new direction

    • OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT memory by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory, making the system more capable, current, and scalable across long-term use. Memory allows ChatGPT to remember useful details about users, including their preferences, projects, and constraints. Instead of starting every conversation from scratch, ChatGPT can use this context to provide more relevant responses in future chats. OpenAI first launched saved memories in February 2024. That feature allowed users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to save information into its memory, such as travel plans or writing preferences. However, this system had limits because it depended heavily on users giving clear instructions to remember something. Additionally, saved memories could become stale over time. In April 2025, OpenAI expanded memory by allowing ChatGPT to reference past chat context outside the saved memories list. This was powered by a background process called “dreaming,” which automatically curates memories from chat history. This made ChatGPT better at learning from natural conversation without requiring users to manually save every detail. Today, OpenAI announced a more capable and compute-efficient memory architecture built on top of dreaming. This new system improves ChatGPT’s ability to carry forward useful context, follow user preferences, and remain accurate as time passes. According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, the new system improves factual recall from 67.9% in 2025 to 82.8% in 2026. Preference adherence improves from 55.3% to 71.3%, while accuracy over time improves from 52.2% to 75.1%. The best part of this new system is a new memory summary page where users can review ChatGPT's memories. Users can even update details, correct information, or give instructions on what topics ChatGPT should bring up and when. This new, improved memory system is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US starting today. It will roll out to more countries, as well as Free and Go users, in the coming weeks.
    • I work for a video production company in Australia. The camera operators shoot footage and then pass the SD card over to the editors. Much easier than handing over the entire camera. Plus, on a busy day you can hand off the SD card and then pop another in for the next shoot. Or, you might have used multiple SD cards because you need the extra space for a long shoot. I also use USB cables and wifi for transferring footage, but in many cases an SD card reader is the easiest method.

It keeps you safe online, protects your privacy, and lets you browse the web quickly. You can even use it on all your devices and keep your browsing history and favorites synced up. Built on the same technology as Chrome, Microsoft Edge has additional built-in features like Startup boost and Sleeping tabs, which boost your browsing experience with world class performance and speed that are optimized to work best with Windows. Microsoft Edge security and privacy features such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Password Monitor, InPrivate search, and Kids Mode help keep you and your loved ones protected and secure online. Microsoft Edge has features to keep both you and your family protected. Enable content filters and access activity reports with your Microsoft Family Safety account and experience a kid-friendly web with Kids Mode. The new Microsoft Edge is now compatible with your favorite extensions, so it’s easy to personalize your browsing experience. Microsoft Edge 149.0.4022.52 changelog: Migration to improved V2 architecture for Workspaces. Workspaces, introduced in Edge in 2022, allows users to create durable sets of tabs that can be saved and shared with others. In order to improve reliability and performance of this feature, the following changes are being made: Migrating data for saved Workspaces from OneDrive/SharePoint to Edge Sync service Removing the collaboration/share functionality of this feature For organizations who have disabled Sync through policy, the existing v1 Workspace data will still be migrated to the new architecture. New v2 Workspaces created after migration won't sync across devices and will remain local to each device. This update occurs on a progressive rollout beginning in Edge Stable v145 and will continue rolling out in Edge v149. For more information, see Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces. Feature Updates Passkey Sync for Enterprise Users. Microsoft Edge is introducing support for passkey synchronization for enterprise users, enabling secure, passwordless authentication across devices. Passkeys created in Edge can now be synced seamlessly, improving sign-in experience while maintaining strong security standards. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this change, check back as we continue the rollout. Enterprise WebView2 runtime downgrade via DowngradeVersion policy. Administrators can temporarily roll back specific applications to a previous WebView2 Evergreen Runtime version (N-1 or N-2) using the new DowngradeVersion policy in msedgewebview2.admx. The Downgrade Version policy allows enterprises to mitigate critical regressions by specifying per-application exe-to-version mappings. The Edge Updater installs the target version side-by-side, and the WebView2 Loader redirects targeted apps accordingly. Downgrades auto-expire with each new WebView2 release: apps pinned to N-1 remain on the same version (now becoming N-2) and will auto-update in the next release, while apps pinned to N-2 will revert to the current Evergreen version. The policy applies only to enterprise-managed devices (domain-joined or MDM-enrolled). For more information, see Microsoft Edge WebView2 Policy Documentation | Microsoft Learn. Collections retirement. Collections has been removed in this update. Users can no longer access or use the feature. To keep saved content, users can export it, or move all pages to Favorites before updating to Microsoft Edge Stable 149. For more information, see Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support. Modern, unified, and updated Look and Feel. Microsoft Edge has updated the Look and Feel to give customers a unified experience across all of Microsoft AI surfaces including Copilot and Bing. This changes multiple elements of the UX such as spacing, corners, fonts, default colors, etc. Clarify choices surrounding third-party cookie settings. Language under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies are clarified to better describe the choices users have in managing third-party cookies. Custom primary password retirement. Users are no longer able to create a new custom primary password in Edge Settings edge://settings/autofill/passwords/settings. Any users who are still using a custom primary password will be automatically migrated to device authentication. Additionally, the PrimaryPasswordSetting policy will no longer support the WithCustomPrimaryPassword option. For more information, see Keep your saved passwords private in Microsoft Edge | Microsoft Support. Unifying Copilot Chat policy controls. The Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy is the standard for configuring Copilot Chat. Previously, this behavior was controlled by blocking the Copilot extension, either explicitly or by using the * wildcard via the ExtensionSettings or ExtensionInstallBlockList policies. Extension and sidebar policies no longer affect the appearance or functionality of Copilot Chat. Copilot address bar suggestions were also tied to extension policy settings. Starting in Microsoft Edge version 149, admins can use the CopilotAddressBarSuggestionsEnabled policy to manage this behavior. Intune MAM Protected Downloads. • Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.2 by Razvan Serea Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free and open-source video and audio player for Windows. MPC-HC is based on the original Guliverkli project (which is no longer maintained) and contains many additional features and bug fixes. As the continuation of the original Media Player Classic, MPC-HC isn’t flashy but it works with nearly any media format. MPC-HC uses DXVA technology to pass decoding operations to your modern video card, enhancing your viewing experience. And MPC-HC supports both physical and software DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles. Overview of features A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about: Dark interface Menu > View > Dark Theme When using dark theme it is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons. Options > Advanced Video preview on the seekbar Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar Adjust playback speed Menu > Play > Playback rate The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%): Options > Playback > Speed step Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction. Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later Options > Player > History You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel. You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown. You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player. Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting) Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only) A-B repeat - You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers. You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video Menu > View > Pan&Scan This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below). There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well. Options > Player > Keys Tip: there is a search box above the table. You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites Put yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder. Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder. Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced This includes an option to specify the location of the .exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder. Play HDR video This requires using madVR or MPC Video Renderer. After installation these renderers can be selected here: Options > Playback > Output Ability to search for and download subtitles, either automatically or manually (press D): Options > Subtitles > Misc Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.2 changelog: Updated LAV Filters to version 0.81-23-g6fadb Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.10.2.2540 Updated MediaInfo DLL to version 26.05 Updated MPC Audio Renderer Several crash fixes, bug fixes and small improvements.
