Spotify - Amazing Legal music App

Question

I came across www.spotify.com a few days ago, and I must say it's amazing! Been using it ever since, and haven't had a need to open itunes at all. Has pretty much every song I search for, and plays instantly with no buffering or problems etc, for a beta its very good. Anyway, it was invite only but today it's gone public so anyone and everyone can sign up. Give it a go, see what you think, i think it's a new revolution in how we will listen to music in the future.

Here's a review: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LQC2eBQ7Lsk

I know this will be a minority taste amongst those posting here, but does Spotify carry any classical music?

Yes, there's classical in there, though Spotify does not allow you to search by Genre which a shame, cause it is indeed a wonderful little application, Also remember the music you can find on it varies by country, so people in the UK might find stuff not available to Spain users and vice versa.

I like this from their "What is Spotify page":

"And because the music plays live, there’s no need to wait for downloads and no big dent in your hard drive."

Well, everyone knows that data you stream is actually less than the data if you downloaded it

*scratches head*

yeah that sounds right...sheesh

Who wants to tell them 160kb/s Free or 320kb/s is the same streamed as downloaded ?

I would but my care factor gauge has been stuck at -infinity since the iPad was announced

Give it 6 months and it will be gone because the business model is a superhighway to failure and bankruptcy

I think you are missing the point, somewhat.

I think you are missing the point, somewhat.

What, youre going to tell me that apart from the streaming data being magically less than directly downloaded data, the time it takes to stream it is LOWER than the time it takes to directly download it as well?

Thats awesome

What point am i mising exactly????

Does anyone in the UK have a Spotify Invite they could kindly donate to me?

PM'd :)

@Raa: It was, but they made it invite only again because it was getting too much interest (apparently) from people, and their servers couldn't cope with the surge in demand.

The fact that the whole point of streaming is that the data is cached, therefore not taking up space on your hard-drive for all eternity. The cache can be flushed once finished with etc. Also - you can be listening after the first few kilobytes are downloaded (depending on the size of the track) rather than having to wait for the entire file to be present before listening to it.

If that doesn't benefit you then Spotify as a platform is pretty useless. Might as well just stick to mp3 files.

Cached or not the data size is the same, unless you exist in some quantum universe where the laws are different? :)

I dont know about you, but i rarely , actually never, listen to a song just once, i like my cache full :)

And as for listening after only a few kb's are downloaded, well you arent on dialup are you, in just 30 seconds (if that on broadband) you can have the whole song downloaded and listen to it without the glitches

I started out querying their stupidity in asserting data sizes were different when you streamed from them and them alone (Note: usual rules of data size continue to be normal for the rest of the internet) and ended up i believe reinforcing why their and the other "free" streaming music business models are doomed.

I listen to my music more than once, im not about to login every time i want to hear something and end up blowing bandwidth on return visits (thereby killing their no wait and no large filesize paradox).

I download my music, its mine

Ill be off now, i think ive made my point...

Fantastic service. I love the no-buffering side of it. I don't mind the ads but some are just annoying, like one which plays an answer machine message and the beep from it is just really loud :/

"Leave your message after the beep... BEEP."

Overall a great service though.

You can kind of search by genre if you find a classical artist you like, it will show you some related tags at the top and if you click one which is related.

I have 4 invitations, first four people to quote this post get one (PMing is too much hassle :p). I'll check this topic each time I'm on Neowin till invites are used.

edit: I know you'll want to keep your email private, so I'll PM you after you quote. I just can't be bothered with a flood of PMs.

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair
    • If he hasn't been able to figure that out, then why is he obsessed with tariffs? Because that's one of the most prominent tools to level the playing field when you have high cost of labor.
    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
    • The high cost of labor and operating within the US. Donald hasn't been able to figure that out--pathetic.
