Losing the thumbnails in Windows Vista was a bit of a bummer, but it's a real hindrance in Windows 7 as they're relied on quite heavily with Aero Peek and the superbar. Exiting from a game and finding much of the taskbar's functionality is useless makes for a poor experience no matter how technically logical it is.

Perhaps they could be cached to the disk before being purged from memory, or regenerated when the memory hogging application is closed? At the very least, regenerate them when the icon on the taskbar is moused over or alt-tab is brought up - could even put the "flaming donut" in the thumbnail until it's displayed to give a little feedback. :)

Something that I find annoying is that when you use Aero Peek it will often make video playback really jerky for about 5 seconds. I'm not sure it happens every time but certainly a lot. Hopefully it's just a driver issue that will be resolved quickly.

sppsvc.exe was spiking cpu at startup so was glad to find the timernuke activation extender which removes all of these software authentication services and the 30-day timeout.

I have a prob with the W7000 crashing almost daily at startup, after I get the new W7 bootscreen it just goes back to restart. If I go into my other partition then it seems to start the next time. I ran sfc filechecker and chkdsk /f which was clean, although after installing timernuke I now get unfixable errors in filechecker which I suspect are the from the timernuke as they only appear after I installed it earlier today.

anybody else have this bug or can tell me how to troubleshoot it?

Am I reading correctly? You're asking for help with your Win 7 installation that has a problem being caused by using a crack that you're using? :o

I'm still trying to figure out why it's necessary to crack something that is going to be openly released in a week or two, and can be rearmed up to 5 times.

When DWM is restarted, could it take a quick look at all minimised windows to regenerate those thumbnails back into video RAM?

As Brandon said, apps tend to stop painting themselves when minimized.

You'd have to trick it into thinking that it was restored, which could have unintended consequences.

No, the problem with W7000 sometimes buggin out of boot right after the new boot screen was happening ever since I installed it 3 days ago. I only installed the crack today after realizing that it was the solution to these software policy services spiking my CPU, especially sppsvc.exe which one of several the crack removes. Suddenly I had 3-4% CPU again instead of 70-80% from those software authentication svcs running, which alone is good enough reason to me to install the crack.

There's nothing to look at, a minimized window has no UI. Unfortunately, changing this would have huge compatibility impact (and likely at least some performance cost).

I appreciate that WinAMP probably does something funky but I don't understand how it happens. Surely Windows should just take the window as it's being rendered and display it in the thumbnail? The WMP thumbnail displays video in realtime. The same with coming out of games... why does is not display the correct preview?

Someone already told you...it's not an OS fault. It does the same thing in Vista. It's a programming bug for the application. Use WMP for playing MP3 audio instead. No problems there.

How about saving a snapshot of the thumbnails when the DWM is instructed to shutdown (By applications or otherwise) then displaying that until a new thumbnail can be generated.

I know a lot of these questions are silly, I'm sure the developers at MSFT have considered all obvious angles, but it never hurts to ask.

Anyhow, in the end, it's just a minor inconvenience.

It's the OS implementation. WinAMP has a specific issue but ALL windows have no thumbnail after exiting a game - you can't say that's anything other that Windows' fault. I'm sure it exists for some legitimate technical reason but that doesn't stop users coming across it. It's a known issue, which is surely possible to fix - as suggested it could simply cache the data and restore it after exiting a game. With Aero Peek being one of the main features of Win7 it's all the more important to find a way around it.

I don't see why you're trying to defend it. It IS an issue, though admittedly not a showstopper.

To answer this question, you must look back to the origin of the DWM.

When they designed Window previews, it worked for no Windows. Then it worked for most Windows (Current Vista and Win7 State). Now, the Windows that don't work cannot be faulted for the DWM's inability to handle it, since this behavior (The custom chrome drawing) existed before the fact.

If their DWM thumbnail broke AFTER DWM was introduced, as in, they suppress the DWMs thumbnail collector explicitly, then it would be the fault of the Application. The fault is on the DWM.

I am not sure if it is just my copy, but here is a weird bug. I created a standard account. When trying to launch Media Center I get an error saying the program did not respond and does not start up. However, when I right click on the icon and choose Run as Adminstrator, it starts up with no problem.

Can someone else using build 7000 create a standard user account and try to launch Media Center and see if this is a possible bug?

Thanks

Media Center works fine here. I even installed my ATSC tuner using Vista drivers and it works perfectly :)

Gadgets will seize to operate if you deactivate UAC and restart ! But if you activate it, they will start working again.... (after restart) :/

The WINAMP bug as well, dont think its software caused, since not all skins give that glitch...

I once got a ghost window on taskbar, since it only occupied a place on the taskbar, but there was nothing open not any foreign process was running.

There is glitch with Weather gadget, if not maximized, the control panel for the gadget on the right of it wont be fully renderd.

For got to mention that when trying to uninstall comodo or kerio it disables my wifi driver and touchpad drivers. I had to install them again. I knew eventually I'd find some bugs although I know these may not be ones caused by 7 alone. Still annoying as hell and I may just stick to vista for now !

I'll have to add that while in build 6801 my creative sound drivers (using the windows vista ones) for a Soundblaster Audigy ZS Platinum Pro worked without any hitches but now it seems to have broken itself in build 7000. Sound works once installed however it manages to freeze and then stop working until next restart. No thats no the application freezing, but i am guessing that the drivers from vista and the latest build have become incompatible...I don't know how..but i guess its broken now.

1.) comodo firewall does not update or work. fails leak tests without windows firewall enabled. also when trying to uninstall causes a system crash.

2.) sunbelt kerio firewall causes the pc to hang and crash right after boot.

that are no real Win7 bugs, that are bugs from applications. use the included firewall and you're fine ;)
