Just got my legal key and activated without any problems. YAY :D I managed to download my copy yesterday before they took it down and was loosing hope that I would be able to snatch a key but I did :) Works beautifully and found all my hardware and all the programs I used in Vista work flawlessly so far. Can't wait to try this baby out for real with a LEGIT key :D

Good luck everyone!

Get over yourself, each key has unlimited activations.

What bothers me is that they still tell us (even on the newly-opened official beta page) that the limit stands. But maybe it's simply "after 2,5m downloads, we're removing the links so that our servers won't get hammered so much", and if we give our key and install dvd to someone it'll still work.

Ok, I had an earlier pre-beta version running stable on my PC and went back to Vista.

My questions are.....

What are these product keys doing for you guys??

Is it to allow for updates to fixes during the public beta process??

Well, you have to have one if you don't want to "test" for only 30 days (or 120 with rearm hack). Or if you want to legitimately and unanonymously contribute to the testing.

So are people still receiving distinctive keys, or are they the infamous ten? My understanding of the situation is that MS released 2.5 million distinctive keys (tied to Live ID for feedback priority purposes), while the remaining beta downloaders receive generic keys due to the high demand.

Don't know why people are still stressing out about getting keys. They are not unique. Just google it and you'll get the keys.

That is what people should do but this topic is a mess. people just coming in have no idea whats going on. This needs cleaned up, the first post needs updated, or a whole new topic covering everything needs started. Anyoen up for it?

"Remaining"? They haven't even announced the beta until half an hour ago. And only then did they announce officially about the 2,5m limit (a blog entry hardly counts as "official"). What would be the purpose of announcing something that's already gone?

Also, TechNet and MSDN keys do not count towards the 2,5m.

I found that i refreshed the page a few times and got different keys, so how are they planning to keep track of what feedback was from what user? Does this mean there will be no free copies unlike Vista?

As long as your Live ID is tied to the beta program (irregardless of what key you have), I imagine Microsoft can still distribute free copies randomly. Or MS might just get their crap in order for the RC release (if they bother making it public).

problem is very few people should even have keys. It only worked for a few minutes when they posted it. So in theory, no one should have any of these keys so no one knows the answer to that. But it's definitely not your explanation unfortunately.

when you are a OFFICIAL beta tester then yeah you MIGHT get a free copy, they never gave away free copies of Vista to people who were in the CPP. The testing you do now will be good to them but you aren't supposed to be getting anything from it.

I second this.
