Awesome news! I've always wanted a multi-race campaign ever since I first played Dawn of War II. I haven't even beat a single mission yet in Chaos Rising, haha. As always, I will get this on launch day. I'm glad they're still making Dawn of War RTS games. :)

Yay for Steamworks support!

Relic has announced a beta for Dawn of War II: Retribution will hit sometime in “the new year”, and also revealed the game will forgo the use of GFWL like previous titles in the series by using Steamworks only.

A new back end, guest passes, free multiplayer weekends

Retribution will use Steamworks for the “all new matchmaking and ranking set up” in the game, and will allow for other added benefits.

We are also going to include an all new matchmaking and ranking set up, built specifically for Dawn of War II – Retribution,” said Relic in a statement.

dow2retribution.jpg

THQ has announced pre-order incentives for its Warhammer 40K RTS title, Dawn of War II – Retribution as well as a collector’s edition of the game.

The CE will give players access to all of the available bonus Wargear for each of the six playable races in the game, a poster, and six race art cards all wrapped-up in a collector’s box for $39.99, which is only available to North American gamers through the THQ store. Those who prefer a particular race allegiance can instead pre-order one of the six available race packs for $29.99, which is the same price of the standard game. Each race pack includes four “unique ability and Wargear items” which can be used during the single-player campaign.

I want to get the collector's edition but I also want to get it on Steam, like Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising. I really hope the product key for the THQ version will allow you to download the game through Steam.

Well, as far as that goes, the games require Steam to play no matter where you buy it. I bought Dawn of War 2 from Best Buy and Chaos Rising from the THQ store and had to have Steam for them so I assume Retribution will work the same way.

Anyways, Retribution is now available for pre order on Steam and they are doing something interesting. They are having "race packs", where you get exclusive war gear for the race you have chosen. I'm not certain which one I'll go for yet, I'm thinking Chaos Space Marines.

The Ork race pack is exclusive to Steam so I'm assuming other places will have different exclusives. I want them all.

Edit: http://kotaku.com/57...s-the-race-card

Tyranid race pack is exclusive to the THQ store. I'm thinking I'll have to go for the CE, then. Also helps to read posts before mine so I don't post redundant information.

Edit 2: Anyone else think the pricing for this game series is awesome? If these were console games we'd be paying $60 for each game.

Edit 3: I'm assuming they have but I'll ask anyways, did they fix the crash bug at the end of CR when you're fighting the last boss guy?

The CE is not available for pre-order outside US yet, but their UK page says it will be for ?39.99.

How could I forget the fact that the game requires Steam? :pinch: It's a shame that the collector's edition is US-only. Hopefully, that'll change in the near-future. As for the game's pricing, it's absolutely lovely.

I don't understand why i don't like this game, i keep trying the campaign but get bored after a few levels. It feels (to me) clunky to have to manage all the different units, when they each have their own abilities and require attention. It's like a combination of Mass Effect squads, and a RTS - but i just can't get into it.

It definitely isn't your standard RTS game. I think that's the biggest push factor for traditional RTS fans. I don't quite enjoy playing it alone though. I guess it's because I started (and recently completed) the campaign with my friend. In my opinion, it's a game best enjoyed cooperatively. At least then, you only have to worry about managing two squads rather than four.

Thanks, Buio. That video preview was great. I can't wait to play the beta on the 8th. That's when it becomes available for those that bought Dawn of War 2 or Chaos Rising through Steam but didn't pre-order Retribution yet. For those that pre-ordered it, the beta should be available.

You also get into the beta on the 1st if you registered on dawnofwar2.com before January 25th.

Looks like they changed that: http://community.dawnofwar2.com/blog-post/repost-receiving-retribution-beta-keys-0

I registered on the 1st and I was able to receive a beta key. I don't know if it's limited to people that registered before they switched to the "alternative system".

Great review, Buio. I haven't bought the game yet but I plan on doing it soon. My friend, whom I played Dawn of War 2 with when it first came out, hasn't bought it yet so I'm just waiting on him. Has anyone bought it yet? I'm interested in how good the campaign is for the various races.

Well I placed a pre order for the CE but the damn thing was apparently out of stock even though nowhere on the THQ website does it say that. So I haven't got my copy yet. It's supposedly shipped by now but their p.o.s. order tracking can't even find my order for me to confirm.

So in short, no, I haven't had the chance to play it yet.

They didn't even ship mine out, or charge me...I ordered the second I could. Guess I'll be giving a phone call here shortly.

Great expansion, I really loved playing as Ork. They have really nailed the singleplayer gameplay in my opinion. With the possibility to play as different factions, the addition and integration of army units to the campaign, and nice maps and scenarios. Good stuff.

Does anyone have Chaos Rising and/or Retribution? I recently bought Retribution and I haven't played a single mission of that or Chaos Rising. Unfortunately, my Dawn of War 2 partner hasn't bought either games yet.

The campaign in Chaos Rising is way better than the first game, although you cannot choose faction to play. Retribution campaign is good, but not as good as Chaos Rising, but it does allow you to play which faction you want and that adds a lot to the fun. It's the same campaign for all factions though, it only changes opponents in certain scenarios. Retribution changed to use Steam multiplayer instead of GFWL, so you cannot play that if you want to play with your friend afaik.
