Q and A With Eric Boltjes

These are busy times at the Guerrilla Games HQ. Because after a many days of designing, developing, tweaking, testing, refining and polishing, Killzone 2 was finally launched last week. And after a short, but quite sweet celebration, we?re back at the office, processing tons of feedback, questions and complaints coming from our most dedicated fans. We sat down with Senior Online Game Designer Eric Boltjes (EBolt) to talk us through some of the main concerns of the community today.

cruisers_590.jpgSome dedicated players feel the top ranks of the game are too easy to achieve. Could you explain how the scoring/ranking-mechanism came about?b>

Ranks are only a third of the entire progression; ribbons and medals are the bigger part. These unlock secondary badge abilities and things like more starting ammunition, more grenades, improved sniper zoom etc. There appears to be a problem with the honor ranks and the way they were reset on Sunday AND Monday. Could you give us a little insight into what went wrong?b>

Unfortunately not at this time. We are currently investigating this issue.Apparently, people have been using bots to score points to rank up as quickly as possible. Surely, that can't be right?b>

We have disabled bots for online games for now with a hotfix and we are working on a proper solution as we speak. This basically means that bots will be back soon, but they?ll be in unranked gameHow come the site is slow/down and what is Guerrilla Games doing to fix it?

We simply have way more people visiting the website than anticipated! We are currently working on improving the website performance. This means we had to temporary shut down some functionality, like statistics, battle replays and clan-pages, but we?re working aournd the clock to get it all back onlDoes this also affect the statistics that are currently down? And what about previously gained stats? Are these saved anywhere or are they gone forever?r?

Don?t worry, all statistics are still being saved as they are shown in-game and will return on killzone.com as soon as we get our full functionality back oWhy don?t we get answers to all our questions on the forum? It appears there?s a lot of useful feedback coming from the community.mmunity.

Well, we try to be as active as possible but at the moment, there are so many threads and posts that we cannot reply to everyone. It?s a bit overwhelming, to be honest. And besides, we are also very busy actually working on fixing problems that are being posted. But rest assured, we are definitely reading and are doing everything we can to get all the right information to the rightSome players are getting weird error codes when they try to connect. Could you give us the translation of the most common error-messages?-messages?

There?s quite a lot of variety behind the different error messages, so my advice would be to post network errors on the killzone.com forums with as much details as possible. Posting your psn-name, time of error, what country you?re in and what you were doing before you got the error message really helps us a lot in pinpointing andA question about Team Talk. Why do we have to communicate in squads and proximity only?roximity only?

We felt it was tactically/gameplay-wise more interesting to do it this way and specifically chose not to allow everyone to talk with everybody. It is more realistic and we felt it created a quite cool dynaDo you have any other future updates and improvements planned?ments planned?

We are working on patches and downloadable content but we cannot give any specifiWhat should people do if they have questions or comments?s or comments?

Keep us posted through the forum and add as much detail as possible! As I said, we might not be able to reply in every topic, but we sure are listening in our quest to make the gEric, thanks for you time! One final question though. After all these initial comments, questions and feedback, you still think it's fun to produce a high profile title like Killzone 2?ke Killzone 2?

Are you kidding me? This is the best job :) the world! :)

just finished the single player, and, to be honest, it was pretty poor story wise... it ended and i was like "is this it?". underwhelming is a good way to describe it... like some reviewers have said, it feels very disjointed when flipping from one mission to the next.

hopefully i can get into the multiplayer more and enjoy that aspect. i must admit though, apart from the predominantly (faces aren't great?) good graphics, this game just lacks that special something, the x factor if you will. it certainly isn't the game the hype machine set it up to be, and i hoped it would be. this is all in my own opinion of course.

after saying all that though, it's still a good game if your a ps3 owner.

I have all the intel, but till they hook up the stats servers I cant see the extras, and I want to see about printing off and making that ISA flying thing, Intruder?

I'm also looking for one last Helghast infantry type I have left to Melee. *shakes fist*

Once that's done, will have only doing the game on the hardest for all the SP trophies.

I think Rico is an idiot lol. War could have ended with the capture of Visari but thanks to Rico things are going to get ugly. I guess they made an open ending to continue the game on Killzone 3. I like the game but didn't like the end very much. One thing I liked about the ending is that at first I didn't think they where going to kill Visari, that the good guys won and everything is over but after Visari's death and the scene after that with the Helghast fleet you get the feeling that the war is far from over. Reminded my of God of War 2 ending.

yeah I thought the same that dude is soooo stupid.

Indeed, and he's pretty much an ass-hole after (accidentally) killing Garza and sev being mad about it.. then later on he almost beats a ISA soldier to death because he made a remark about templar, the guy should go on anger management, but i guess it added a nice variety to the mix. :p

Yeah, I know. My PS3 hasn't come in the mail, so I can't even play it for myself yet. But it's kind of killed the anticipation for me a little.

Definitely let us know where you stand, once you get it up and running then (Y) Hopefully you'll have a positive experience, unlike some of us.

Will do. I can't wait to be a human shield (target? :|) for those of you who have been playing a ton already.

It's just you have to get used to the controls. The game overall is not bad at all.

This comment only applies to people who play a lot of other games are looking for the controls to be something rather than what they are. My coworker said this, and it makes sense, let me explain.

What I mean is this coworker has a PS3, he got it for Blu Ray and MGS4 primarily. He does not have a 360, and he has not played an FPS on a console since the PS2. So for him what he said was he does not have to get used to the controls, he simply has to learn them. i think that makes a whole lot of sense.

Right. I hardly play my PS3 and I'm used to the controls. I've had the game less than a week.

At the end of the day, it's personal preference.

i dunno i play alot of games (mostly 360 infact*) and i dont have a problem with killzones controls or the ds3 in general, seems more like moaning for moaning's sake to me

*apart from a few games like cod4 and burnout if its multiplatform i almost always get the 360 version
