Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Bug/Annoyance:

The RC build still does not include drivers for my laptop's wi-fi card. it is an older card (Intel Pro series), but I don't see why the driver would be included with Vista and not Windows 7. Not only that, but there are no drivers for any of the network cards on the system. I have to hunt for drivers and install them off a flash drive so I can get the rest of the drivers off Windows Update.

I have the same thing. No wireless drivers, (even though they ere included with Vista) very frustrating!

I have finally found a way to play high bitrate MKV files as well as all other major video and audio formats in Win7MC RC without "Media Center Not Responding" errors that were caused from various codec packs including Shark's codec pack, and the fact that WinMC by default uses the built in H264 decoder by default which cause the jerkiness of high bitrate MKV files. The link to instructions below tells you how to override two registry entries that will allow FFDSHOW to be your default H264 decoder without renaming files and without installing bloated codec packs. I have tested this method on 4 different 32bit Win7MC RC and have had flawless high bitrate and all other format playback with no media center crashes or errors. Please try this method and post here on your results!

1.) Download and install the latest stable FFDSHOW tryout from here

2.) Download and install the latest stable Haali-Matroka splitter from here

3.) Download and rename .txt to .reg and run regedit file to register MKV files in Win7MC by right clicking the following link and selecting "Save Link As" from here

4.) Go to the following website that tells you how to edit the registry and tell Win7MC to use FFDSHOW as your default H264 Decoder instead of the crappy MS one by clicking here

5.) Reboot PC and enjoy flawless MKV playback using FFDSHOW which is without a doubt the best software based H264 decoder! By the way this method is fully reversible and still uses MS MPEG2 decoder for Live TV and LiveTV playback as well as MS H264 decoder for HD .MOV files from digital cameras and camcorders.

Bug:

My desktop's motherboard has some compatibility issues with 4gb of ram, x64, and my X-Fi card. Under Vista SP1 the card has random pops/clicks and isn't usable. under Vista SP2 the sound issues seem to have cleared up, although I am still testing it. Under Windows 7 RC no sound will play out of the card at all. Not only that, but any application trying to play sound seems to freeze, even in WMP an audio file will stay stuck at 00:00 as it fails to play.

I understand these are just hardware issues and probably caused by old/incompatibile hardware. Other than those couple issues, I have had a great experience with Windows 7 so far.

you're looking for the x-fi support pack v1.0 - it's a modified driver for win7 x86/64bit - runs great on my x-fi extreme audio

google to find it - it's not provided by creative.

I have installed Windows 7 yesterday and it works like a charm, a major improvment over Vista, however, I have a little bug here. I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but here it goes.

Whenever I try to view a picture using the Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Live Photo Gallery, it shows a pink picture, but if I use another program to view photos like IrfanView, it shows up fine. Check the picture.

This happens since build 7000, I reported to MS but it still goes on. Re-installing the drivers of the GPU (NVIDIA 9600GT) doesn't help.

That's your monitor color profile doing that. Uninstall monitor drivers/set the profile to default.. It's a little too complicated for me to explain how since I don't exactly get it myself :p

Anyone else getting a weird right click to properties bug in build 7100. Basically there is a 4 second delay when right clicking on the desktop; wasn't there in build 7000.

Yep, happened during my test of the RC. It was on the desktop mainly.

It's only a small anomaly but does anyone have the start orb glow after it has been closed occasionally? So... Click it, start orb glows, menu opens, close start menu any number of ways and start orb continues to glow until the start menu is opened and closed again. It happens rarely and it seems to be when I'm doing something really quickly.

i know if u right click it on the very far left then left click on the desktop the orb will stay highlighted

Haven't tried a build since 7000 - but that worked great on my laptop. 7100 freezes everytime I connect using the Intel Pro 1000 NIC. If I use my wireless, I'm fine. Freezes at random times. Sometimes I get away with 10 minutes and then it freezes. It only starts once I plug in the NIC though. I can run for hours without it being connected. Extremely frustrating! Haven't been using 7 because of this issue.

Pretty much all Wireless intel cards should be supported via Windows update or by default, Also I have X-FI Xtreme Gamer working perfectly using Daniel_K's v1.1 XFI Drivers for Windows 7, Works in SP1 Vista, SP2 RTM and all versions of Windows 7 without any issues.

Give me the exact model of the Intel wireless card and i'll find you Win7 drivers.

I have noticed that Build 7100 installs faster then any other build i have used and i have used most of them, I also have lined 7100RC X64 along side Vista SP2 RTM X64 and i have to say Vista is still Vista, a few changes but still sluggish with alot of things, Windows 7 7100RC i have found to be alot faster and reliable, responsive with alot of tasks i wish to do.

I haven't run into any problems with Windows 7, all hardware and software i use are supported. Anyway i dedicate VISTA SP2 as my work machine creating builds through vlite and burning stuff and Windows 7 as my gaming rig. File transfer and display performance just is way too good in Windows 7.

I'm looking forward to the internal release of SP2 Windows 7.

This might seem like an odd question, but is there any sort of AMD processor driver for Win7? Reason is everytime I use Win7, any build my cpu fan on my AMD 6000+ is always louder, faster than on Vista/XP. Its actually really annoying. Is there a reason for this?

It's not that easy anymore as it seems the RC has fubar'd something with network drivers that worked in all previous betas from Windows Update. I've helped others find drivers from Windows Update only for them not to work or completely drop signal every minute. Now, I will say that wireless intel cards in notebooks seem to be working fine, at least the ones with drivers supplied with the install.

Download Speedfan to control you fan's speed.

    • Autonomous post-training loop placed 8th of 4,000 and then rewrote its own evaluation strategy. An autonomous AI system built by researchers at Amazon's A-EVO-Lab completed a full post-training run on a 30 billion parameter NVIDIA Nemotron model — with no human in the loop, across four rounds running over multiple weeks — and then did something its designers had not planned for: it detected that its own internal evaluation metric had become misleading and redesigned the search strategy it was using to improve itself. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319123/20260626/nvidia-ai-trained-itself-30b-model-corrected-its-own-broken-metric-mid-run.htm

    • If Ford would stop hiring SUITS to run the company, and put CAR GUYS back in charge perhaps they could do better. Heck, the only CAR they produce today is the Mustang. Hey Ford! Not everyone needs/wants an overpriced SUV or pickup truck that is so tall you have to have a step ladder to get in and out of it.
    • Amazing how some will just jump all over something. Probably the same people that thought Musk was a "tech god" before he saddled up with "bad orange man". Before, they worshiped at his feet, including a lot of so called hollywood types. Now, because he fell off the plantation truck, they toss him under the bus.
