Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Recommended Posts

Do you guys use VLC player under 7100 , i didn't had the time to install it,but i will tomorow. I'm just curious, VLC has a nasty pixelized rendering after resize under 7077.I had this problem on builds before 7000.

When will they add .tga viewing support into windows photo viewer? Or even windows live photo gallery?

Does anyone know of or have a tga codec for WIC? It seems thats all thats needed to get windows photo viewer to view TGA's, but it doesn't seem like any exist through a quick google search.

Can you now save files to your desktop without windows bitching that you dont have permission?

Yes, that problem seems to be fixed for me.

Does anybody else get this when maximising Explorer windows? It only flashes up for a split second, and looks like a Vista leftover:

Yeah, I'm noticing that too. Kinda annoying now that it's pointed out :\

BTW: My wireless(Linksys WMP54GS) is still dropping but much less frequently.

Microsoft will be releasing that in a few days/weeks... soon ish

AHH cool, I was wondering. Been reading these articles about it, but can't find it anywhere.

Thanks for the heads up

Did anyone else notice that the EULA says the RC expires June 1st, 2010, yet winver says March 1st 2010? Running slmgr /dlv shows June 1st, 2010. Odd, no? Also, the rearm count has been reduced back to 3.

Anyone's WEI score change? My base score stayed 5.9, but my Memory score went from 5.9 up to 7.4 (it was 5.9 in both 7000 and 7048, it rose up to 7.4 in 7100), my Graphics score (for Aero) dropped from 6.9 to 6.7, but my gaming graphics stayed the same (6.9). My processor and HDD scores are the same as before, but my Memory and Aero Graphics scores both changed....one increased the other decreased.

I have been using 7 and enjoying it since it was available.

I just updated to the RC and am now having problems with DNS.

I have a Linksys N router connected to Cox cable modem. Wifi connections work fine. The problem is with the wired connection to the main computer. I can ping an IP but not a name. I actually got it to work by unchecking all the boxes in the network card's properties window, restarting, then rechecking the boxes. Everything else short of that did nothing.

Since my last restart, I am back to no internet connection and the above trick did not work this time.

I tried tracerrt and opendns. Again, I can ping an IP but not a name.

I am re-updating now. Not sure if a clean install would fix this.

It looks like there is a problem with DNS as far as I can tell. I reinstalled the network card and that also did not help.

Any ideas? I cannot find any answers elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Check the IP address of the wired connection.

For some rather weird reason, the *initial* connection winds up with a 169.254.*.* (private/unassigned) IP address, despite the network adapter (nForce 6 series) being supported. This is unique to 7; however, it's happened with every build so far. I have always reformatted between builds (installs have been clean and from Vista Ultimate x64; install is to a different drive from Vista, and via a VirtualCloneDrive mounted ISO).

A disable/re-enable on the wired adapter fixes the IP problem. (Linksys WRT54GS w/DD-WRT latest connected to Moto SB-5120).

Firefox creates a new profile when installed on a freshly installed OS and that profile name is different. The only thing I backup are the contents of the .default folder within the profile folder:

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5c2ck6gu.default. Take the contents of that and replace it with the ones in the new .default that firefox created.

This is how I backup Firefox as well and have had much success. You just have to make sure you copy and paste ONLY the contents of the old profile folder to the new profile folder, and not the folder itself, because the new profile folder has a different name (as explained above :-). I tried FEBE and was never able to get it to work successfully. This way works for me every time.

The only problem I have noticed with 7100 is that sometimes it takes a couple seconds for folders with large numbers of files to refresh their icons, the first time I access the folder after a reboot. This does not happen after resume from suspend or hibernate. I had this same issue in 7000 and 7057. In XP this was fixed by something related to the IconCache (I think) in the registry, but I don't see an entry for that in Win7. Actually I have also noticed this on occasion with the icons in the start menu "All Programs" folders. Anyway, not a big deal for me. Otherwise no problems. It runs pretty much the same IMHO as 7057 on my Futitsu S6510 laptop.

I have never had this issue. I just install Firefox, delete the directory it created and copy back the "Mozilla" directory into roaming. Firefox picks it up straight away.

I lost  my key from when the beta started...does MS keep records of what email/person has what key?

The keys are all the same five 32-bit and five 64-bit keys. They used to be individual keys before the server used to issue keys crashed and burned due to traffic overload.

There are only like 10 keys total.. I am sure you can find one on a site somewhere. If not, just pm me I will give you one.

Oh cool, i didnt know it didnt really matter, ill snag one! Thanks! ALso im going from vista sp1 with all my stuff setup to RC...think ill be ok??

Well, I've done it three times, from Vista SP2 to builds 7057, 7068 and 7077 with success. Although the upgraded 7's Explorer would hang once in a while. Straight install, no problems whatsoever. In short, it'll work, but clean install is better.

    • The limited imaginations and business acumen of non-dominant players is simply that: the abject lack of creative business acumen. Businesses often want to operate in a financially-rewarding marketplace (free market economics) and/or exit/cash-out at maximal financial recompense. Money is their incentive; regulations are both their obstacles and their tools; politics is their means of influencing the marketplace. Google, in this story's example, is crying that AWS and Azure are "too dominant" -- cuz Google Cloud is not printing as much money as Alphabet wants (although it is still dramatically more than they actually need). The EU DMA should truly follow-the-money and treat the EU as its own sovereign nation in order to protect European market players: Domestic entities are exempt from market-influence regulations until absolute monopoly is achieved; Foreign (non-EU/non-Euro) entities are all regulated via stricter DMA measures whereby regulated partnership with independent domestic entity becomes the only way for foreign entities to 'tip the scale' for favorable financial remunerations. Basically create a dual-track aligning with China's foreign investment models. In my eyes, this is the only way to properly protect the European marketplace beyond the current dot-com/ai-bubble/social-media crazes.

    • Hello, Interesting. I suspect memory and storage costs have slowed the rollout of Windows 11-compatible hardware for some customers. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
