'Left 4 Dead 2' enters the swamp

Valve Software has revealed more details on the second of five campaigns in zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2.

Titled Swamp Fever, the campaign plants the game's four survivors of a zombie apocalypse inside a swamp in Louisiana. A new group of zombies called Mudmen will appear solely in Swamp Fever. Check out more pictures of the campaign at the bottom of this post.

Two new special Infected creatures will appear in the follow-up to last year's cooperative first-person shooter. The Spitter employs "an area attack that can split up survivors or flush them out of their hiding spots," Valve says in a release announcing the campaign. One more special Infected creature will be revealed before the game's November 17 launch on PC and Xbox 360.

Players will also have access to new weapons such as a cricket bat and grenade launcher. This adds to a growing arsenal for the game that includes axes, frying pans and chainsaws.

Anyone who thinks this game should be free is a fool. I am actually boycotting this game (I'm not part of the group) for my own reasons. I feel like they've neglected L4D terribly since it's launch. It took them months to add in the versus maps which should have been there to begin with and there's still loads of issues that need fixing.

I think L4D2 looks great but I already spent ?35 pre-ordering the first one (because I thought of all the support Valve would give post-launch) only to have it bite me in the ass. I'm not letting that happen again.

Just as a note: I don't think Valve did this intentionally. I don't think they set out to make more money or to screw over their customers. I think that after they purchased Turtle Rock they realized there was loads of stuff they wanted to add to L4D but they weren't able to because of time/money constraints. They had to release L4D in it's current state and that's why it came without 2 versus maps etc. After it's release they realized that I'd be more productive to release a brand new game rather than trying to add in all these new ideas as DLC (especially on the 360). Now I feel that they will be required to support both games in order to keep people happy. I might buy L4D2 and then it might get neglected as they rush to update the first one.

It's not a good situation by any means. Perhaps I'll buy it when it goes on sale, but for the moment I'm too annoyed to part with my hard earned cash.

L4d is my absolute favorite game, I have ahd it since release and still play it almost every day, there may not be many maps but they all have an extremely large amount of replayability. The game is much better when you play with friends, I do almost exclusively.

I personally can't wait for l4d2, it looks like it has many much needed balance changes, particularly concerning versus and the new infected (especially the charger) are going to be awesome.I really love all the campaigns we've seen too, they look better and more interesting than the current ones, especially the carnival map :) here's hoping there is a mall campaign too.

Ditto. I have over 380 hours play time.

l4d was alot of fun playing with friends, but im one of the few that wont be getting the 2nd for said reasons. ill continue to play the original.

good thing bf2 is back in swing though ;) lot more people on nowadays. this will def keep me busy till cod:mw2 rls. we all know nothing else will get any playtime in when this beast hits shelves.(Y)

Free will and the freedom of choice. That's what we have when it comes to L4D2 (and any other game). If you don't want to buy/pay for it you don't have to - you just don't get that game then. And if you really want to participate and support the L4D "community" there's the L4D SDK, so you can make the similar additions for the game yourself - FREE!

For such an active and loud "community" there hasn't been that much playable/playworthy content to the game.

I'm getting L4D2 because I have truly had good times with the first one and I expect it to continue with the sequel and because I don't have the time and effort to put into modding the game myself.

And if it's the price you're pondering about, you can always wait until it comes on sale few months after the release - that's how I got my copy of L4D (-50% off). Why the need to have the games "here, now, ASAP"?

I might get the game when its down to $20 but by that time the L4D 1 modders might have some of L4D'2 maps in the first game.

QFT.

I loved L4D 1. I don't think any of my friends are getting L4D 2 so that pretty much sums up my decision to purchase.

Waiting for game to go below cost in a year.

You can preorder the four pack so all your friends and you only pay $34 each instead of the full retail price. You can stretch those extra $14 (since you're waiting for it to be under $20) over playing tens of hours for a year.

The PC version has had some excellent add on campaigns released by the community. I've tried a few, and apart from the lack of extra voice acting, some of them match the quality level of Valve's stock maps.

Doesn't help that the SDK hasn't been released that long,

They should have not of released it the same month of COD MW2. This is the reason I might not pick up the game. I loved one.

A lot of my friends have canceled their mw2 pre order and gone for l4d2 instead but then again l4d is ?20 between 4 and mw2 is ?40

I hate pre-order demos... Let everyone demo it Valve. Hell be bold and give everyone a free weekend before or after the game comes out.

Indeed. A pre-order perk being early access to a DEMO just seems odd to me. I'm not sure why companies or customers like it. But I digress that I don't get a lot of things people do.

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
