I got one question about the upgrade version. I'm currently using Vista - can I do a custom (clean) install using the upgrade version of Win 7 (i.e. Vista to Win 7) or is that only possible with the Windows 7 full version?

If I can get Windows 7 Professional Full Retail Version (not upgrade) from BestBuy or somewhere preordered for $100 I will be very pleased. However that really should be the permanent price for it. If Microsoft were to sell Windows 7 Home Premium for say $69.99 and Professional for $79.99 while selling a 3 or 5 license family pack for $139.99 and $149.99 they'd do a lot better.

I'd love it if Microsoft tied in activation to their Live service - log in to authorize and de-authorize computers - so when I no longer need Windows on a machine, I could just deactivate it online.

Yeah, it wouldn't bother me either, but I can already hear the screaming about the possibility. :)

What makes you think upgrade will go smooth? It is cheaper then Vista which is nice but this is the only option to go for:

Full Retail Windows 7 Professional - $299...ouch $300 or perhaps Home Premium for some people. Upgrade discs are absolute waste of money and time. I wish i am wrong but upgrade on heavily loaded system is going to fail.

What happens with file system.

When you do upgrade from XP to Vista - file system does not get updated which means you run vista on XP version of NTFS file system. However when you do clean install and HDD is formatted using Vista installation process XP cannot be installed on that partition unless it formatted again using XP installation disc to XP version of NTFS file system.

With each Windows version NTFS file system is updated, tweak and i am wondering about compatibility between Vista and Windows 7 version of NTFS file system.

Simply said:

HDD formatted using Vista ---> Windows 7 can be installed on it but it lacks of what?

HDD formatted using Windows 7 ---> Vista can't be installed on it

or perhaps

Vista NTFS version is absolutely = to Windows 7 NTFS version

The Windows 7 Team BLOG has also put out an announcement.

Also, check out THIS PAGE dedicated to the pre-order offer. It directs you to the US site, but you can change the country in the top right corner to get info for where you live. Note that some countries may not have updated their sites yet.

Nice pricing.

Off topic: Why doesnt Microsoft offer people to de-activate Windows in case they need to reinstall or move their licence to another computer?

You just call to have them move your license. I've never had any trouble with it.

Little known Windows license fact: you can install the same copy of Windows on both your laptop and desktop system (unless this has changed for 7).

Wait so it is the upgrade and not full version? sighhhhhhhhhhh....will i be able to use it to upgrade without putting a stupid vista disc in or having a vista copy preinstalled. if no i'll stick with vista or xp it's not worth my money or trouble.

I agree, people do not realize what's waiting them.

Where can i pre-order my full version of Windows 7 (UK website)? The special limited time ?50 price is too good to miss!

The pre-order offer starts July 15th for the UK. You will be able to get it from retail partners and the Microsoft UK online store.

The pre-order offer is for full-packaged versions.

Thanks for the heads up Jeff!

I'd be happier about the upgrades if I wasn't so angry at HP-Compaq for not sending disks with my computer, but choosing to instead to send me a crappy HD with Vista OEM on a recovery partition, then refusing to send disks once that HD bailed. So now I have a perfect valid Vista Home License that I can't use.

I'm thinking of a word, rhymes with "truckers".......

The pre-order offer is for full-packaged versions.

Okay so I will get the full retail version of Windows 7 that does not require a previous install of windows to upgrade? That's my only concern if it is the full retail version I plan on buying a copy of Professional and maybe 1 or 2 of Home Premium.

Thanks.

Many people would balk at having to sign in to activate Windows. :) iTunes Music Store is an account.

Yes, I know, but why would that be needed anyway? You have a unique product key which you can activate without logging in, so a simple "de-activate my computer" link should work as well. :)

Excellent, so we have to wait longer, pay 66% more and get less features!

You have to wait longer to pre-order it, but you will not see it until Oct. 22nd like the rest of the world. MSFT can't include IE because of, well, you know, but it is a free download anyways. Thanks for the feedback on pricing. I think others share your same feelings towards that and MSFT is aware of this.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
