Jeff can you just answer one question. Will we be able to do a fresh install on an upgrade disk and if the os becomes bugged up will we be able to reinstall? if we can't then this is more of the same bs that just feeds into people treating an os like if you mess it up you're screwed when really you should just be able to reinstall it.

I bring good news- you can do a fresh install with an upgrade disk, and you can reinstall from the same disk.

I don't know if it is the same issue, but I have a perfectly good Vista Home License, but no disks to speak of.

Is purchasing an upgrade package even an option at this point?

Thanks for all your help here Jeff. You should get a raise.

Or at least a day off.

If you have the license you will be able to perform the upgrade/install. If you are asking if you can actually purchase the upgrade at this moment, the answer is no. Are you asking if there are multiple license offers?

I suspect that most people who are savvy enough to install an OS are probably going to buy an OEM copy anyway. They miss out on support, but people who do that normally don't need it anyway. I'd be nice to know what the OEM pricing would be if I were to buy this at, say, Newegg.

I think that OS pricing is ridiculous. ?122 (will probably be more in the UK anyway) is just too much for some software. It's a disc. And a code. A complete waste. I know OEM's are cheaper, so if I do buy it, I'll have to get that. I could get a Wii or Guitar Hero World Tour for that price.

Meh....

Thanks to this habit of OEM's not supplying disks with their computers, I have no disks to speak of, but I have a sticker on my case with a Product Code, which I am assuming is a license. Correct?

Q: If I buy an upgrade version, will I be able to type in the Product Code and have it work? Or do I need to have a disk to pop in the drive to verify that I have a legitimate version?

OEM's really need to supply actual disks with the systems they sell, instead of putting stuff on a "recovery" partition.

Awesome, is it like old times where you can just pop in an older Windows installation disk for verification (rather than the tedious Vista clean install method)?

Here are the pre-order upgrade prices:

* US: Windows 7 Home Premium ($49.99) and Windows 7 Professional ($99.99)

* Canada: Windows 7 Home Premium ($64.99) and Windows 7 Professional ($124.99)

* Japan: Windows 7 Home Premium (?7,407) and Windows 7 Professional (?14,073)

* UK: Windows 7 Home Premium (?49.99) and Windows 7 Professional (?99.99)

* France and Germany: Windows 7 Home Premium (€49.99) and Windows 7 Professional (€109.99)

Check out the "Pre-Order Windows 7 Cheaply" section of the Ars Technica article for exact windows of when these prices are available in your country.

So as per usual US users get all the gravy and UK / European users get ripped off? have to say I am pretty disappointed by that

Meh - I'd be getting Win 7, Server 2008 R2, and Office 2010 through my university's MSDNAA program anyway.

Ultimate in normal box etc. cost 1400 zł in Polish "złoty" so it's NOT CHEAP. Is very very very expensive.

HP for 650zł is fcking sick prize too...

I want to be 100% legal and want buy HP or Ultimate in normal box (here: Full Retail). I don't want upgrade, i want NORMAL standard operating system in normal box etc.

But it cost tooo much, Microsoft cry because in this moment is many pirates, but if they do this prices, I CANT buy it :/!

Sorry microsoft, maybe in Poland you can do a bit lower price, coz I'm not poor and have got good work and good money, but this prices for Polish's standard are sicks!

Sorry for my bad English.

They'll blame it on the economic climate. :|

I believe the standard argument is that the taxes are higher over here. Also, UK prices seem to reflect the cost of developing all the other European localised versions although it's not clear why that's the case.

You could argue that various features like Media Center require a lot of development for local markets but that's pretty hard to justify when you consider how long it takes to get them to develop something that's compatible with TV over here :angry:

so if i purchase windows 7 home premium upgrade i will be able to do clean install

however i am on vista 32 bit and if i wish to do windows 7 home premium 64 bit will i still be able to do clean install? dont u have to have a previous version? and i dont have a 64 bit dvd on hand? this is all a bit confusing...

The pricing seems right. I'll settle for Professional edition, unless I can come across Ultimate.

just buy an ultimate OEM copy, it will be much cheaper but without the fancy box. no way im paying what they want for retail and no one knows yet if we can do a clean install from an upgrade disk.

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
