Alan Wake PC "up in the air"

Haha, it reminds me of too many games that became PC ports, like Bully. It's like motion blur was set on permanent even if the character is not moving.

A bit of bad news for those out there who are looking to play Alan Wake on the PC. Remedy recently confirmed that Alan Wake is currently in development for Xbox 360 only and that plans for a PC version are now entirely up to their publisher, Microsoft.

?Thank you for your continued interest in Alan Wake. It is accurate that we are currently working exclusively on the Xbox360 version of Alan Wake. PC plans are currently open, and therefore it?s safe to say that at least a simultaneous launch with the Xbox version will not happen at this late stage. Remedy has a deep heritage in PC gaming and would love to see a PC version available to its PC followers, ultimately however this decision lies with our publisher.?

Isn't porting to PC from XBox 360 supposed to be quite easy since they use the same framework shizzle etc?

Yes. And especially considering most console games are programmed and created on a PC, then ported to the console, it really is just a slap in the face to PC gamers.

PC version shelved - http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a165168...-exclusive.html

"Our PC plans are currently open [and] therefore a joint PC/Xbox launch is not possible at this late stage," said the representative.

"Remedy has a deep heritage in PC gaming and we would love to see a PC version available for our PC followers. Ultimately, however, this is a decision that lies with our publisher."

So now Microsoft gets to decide what we should play and what we shouldn't. I can see where this is going.

Wow. I was really hoping to play Alan Wake on my PC. God damnit. Seriously, someone has to invent some kind of anti-piracy technology. So many games out there could be ported to the PC platform. Gosh, it just angers me to see games like Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 as "console only". Their freaking prequels were released on the PC.

It's more a case of MS wanting it exclusive to bolster the 360 sales, just like how they wouldn't launch Halo on the PC at the same time as the 360, or Gears or anything else GFWL. It would be better if they used that tactic on 1st party content however, not 3rd party content that was originally showcased for the PC

I agree. As much as I like consoles, I sometimes hate them for making PC gaming less enjoyable. Then again, I should blame rampant piracy for that. I miss the old days of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. Now that was a good time for PC gaming.

Oh Puhleeze. This has been debated time and time again.

IMO, it's lazy developers, and tight*rse companies that refuse to release PC games either immediately, or at all.

It's getting to be more frequent, and quite frankly, its ****ing me off.

Audioboxer : Bring me good news buddy! I'm not buying a console, even though Halo, Fable 2 and now this aren't coming to PC. (Some yet, some at all).

Obviously you mean Halo 3 (as the first two certainly did come to PC).

NFS: Shift came out on the PC at the same time as the consoles (but you wouldn't know it given EA's lack of PC push; in fact, the same commercials are being used to push the X360 Elites). I'm referring to the TV ads for SHIFT (G4, of course). Granted, while SHIFT looks better than NFS Undercover (which had actually been the graphically best NFS to date for PC), the keyboard control system blows chunks (I actually preferred the default layout for Undercover, despite it being way different than that for Burnout Paradise, my usual driving game of choice on the PC). I'd like to see what Criterion (which is supposed to be developing the next NFS title) does with it (as Burnout Paradise actually rocks, despite Big Surf Island and Cops and Robbers still being MIA for PC).

That's the wack part; while both are console ports (and from EA), how did Criterion get it right, while Slightly Mad got it wrong?

For those that don't think piracy is an issue should really think that when GTAIV was released there were torrents with ~10,000 seeds each. Now do the math.

10,000 seeds? Do the math?

Sheeeeeeiiiii.... I'd be maxing this connection out, all 4.5mb of it

I kiiiiid

Capcom have been doing wonderfull ports as of late. I don't mind waiting a few months longer than console kiddies (jokes) if it's a perfect port.

And measuring gta vi's success on a torrents 10,000 seeds is completely pointless and irrelevant! I would say that not even 1000 of those people would be buying it if they couldn't just download it.

I garuntee companies would make more money focusing on fan service and slightly lower price schemes than antipiracy measures.

Sod it, this game was supposed to be made with PC in mind i remember watching a demo using the then new out Quad core intel processor, if they dumb this crap down for consoles and give it a transplanted console onto keyboard and mouse control system they can shove the game where the sun dont shine.

+1.

No, that means that it is being pirated in very large quantities. Obviously that the problem - torrents provide free stuff that you do not have to pay for - the difference then becomes between bought and torrented stuff - the box itself and internet play. If these people have internet and a computer capable of running GTAIV and brains, they most likely have the money to buy the game - therefore - the developers are getting their profits stolen. Than again, GTAIV is horribly boring so... Rockstart should get thrown in a coffin and buried after such a boring product.

I think that there should be laws that allow developers to take down torrents or - if the site doesn't comply - take down the site. Just like youtube I would say. It would be a working system.

OR

Built in CD check, CRC Check in a few different places in the game code - preferably activated at different times. I mean just a cd check wrapper won't do, but if say it checked every load and every boss fight using like 10 different methods. I would say such copyright protection would work. Doing it like Bioshock with the installer would also be nice. Normal users would not even notice anything but pirates would suffer.

Just my $0.02

That'd just give the crackers a few days extra work. Then once it's cracked, you have more reason to play the cracked version than the regular. Garunteed some problems for legitimate buyers also.

I do agree that torrents should be able to be taken down, although this wouldn't fully solve it, but definately hinder downloading progress for some.

Thing is, torrents are going out of fashion. The kids are using the file sharing websites now, like rapidshare, with upload speeds so high things go up as quickly as they come down.

What? It might be the best method to compromise. If you think this is a bad idea you are saying two things. One, the allowing of the copyright owner to take down his/her/their content is a bad idea. Two, you pretty much acknowledge full support piracy. As for example, youtube takes down illegal content themselves or through the copyright owner and youtube is still popular opinion/ skill / humor /entertainment site. The only reason such a system would NOT work is simply because torrent sites do not have enough legal content to offer in the first place to sustain themselves without warez.

Yeah yeah fantastic ideas and let the developers **** in our eye balls too! :D

By causation the dissatisfaction over current draconian copyright protection mechanisms is the fault of the warez community.

The thing is, many games just have a CD check upfront which is easy to surpass. What I am proposing is an integration of CD-KEY checks and CRC checks (possibly? - as instead of hacking the exe one could just emulate the server...) deep into the code. That will not be easy to hack. Surely a dedicated hacker would be able to pass it eventually, but for that time, the game will remain unplayable and influence the leech to actually buy the damn product. This could cause problems, if the buyer didn't read the internet requirement or the CD-Check server is down, other problems would be fixed in later patches... I am not sure whether or not that would be less expensive then getting one of the commercial things that don't work.

I am actually surprised that it seems either that the companies are unable to get torrent sites to take down OBVIOUS illegal files (implying that torrent files are obvious warez safeheavens / torrent sites are run by ***holes?), or they don't care (implying that the companies are run by morons?).... anyway, something is seriously broken there.
