[Official] Dragon Age: Origins

I couldn't help myself to wait for Steam to allow me to download it, so I it early from an "alternative" source, keep in mind that I did purchase the game, just didn't want to wait another day.

Game seems awesome except for the annoying limitations of where you can go, I don't know anything about game engines but it looks like it's the same as NWN, 2 to be exact.. it feels the same, except for the nonexistent performance issues !

Also it might be just my old and rusty PC but the graphics aren't very impressive, but it hardly matters ! Enjoying it so far.. still 4 hours to go before I get to download the deluxe version off steam...

I've only played about 2 hours of it, so far it's fairly linear. Story > Dungeon/Castle Crawling > Story > etc. I hope the world opens up freely eventually...

I'm a fair way in to it on the 360 and it's linearity continues you can wander about to locations but most will give you a couple of menial quests which send you back to your latest local which advances the plot. All of the dungeons so far are A to B to C with the odd 'moral choice' most being so blatantly black and white you might as well have a light and dark bar at the bottom representing how much of a tosser you've been so far.

Other than that I'm fairly engrossed. Mages are overpowered when they get their top spells though. Sleep > Waking nightmare > Blizzard is enough to knock massive armies out of commission for up to 15 seconds.

The game is pretty interesting. I have been playing for about an hour and still have yet to kill anything. That is all I want to do, I mean...I am tired of walking around and talking to people. I just want to kill them. Oh yes, yes indeed.

But in all seriousness, I'm liking the way it works.

Anyone know where I can get a good mage build (or at least some guidance on mages in general)? I have looked on the Dragon Age forums and looked at the Dragon Age wiki but there is too few details on either so far to get any good info. Started playing as a rogue (my normal class in MMOGs) but even on easy I find it fairly annoying to have to command your other party members around to do anything meaningful for a rogue (I have to make them halt while I sneak into position, then I have to tell them to attack while I come up behind the target(s)).

What's this nonsense ?!

"Available: 7 November 2009

This game will unlock in approximately 2 days and 14 hours"

How come some people got it through steam already and some (just me ?) still have to wait a freaking week ? :( Oh wait, fail me, just 2 days.

Edit:

Yeah.. apparently they did that to all of UK and possibly the EU as well.. Can't say I feel ripped off as I will still get the game but damn it, I already uninstalled the "bad" version in preparations for the legit.. ;(

well, there's a big difference between PC and consoles, I've played it with a friend on PC (my PC can't run it at all) but is there a difference between both consoles? Gamespot gave 0.5 more to the PS3 version  that's very weird

Dunno why but I'll take a guess. PS3 graphics are of a higher caliber while the 360's is lower but also has a smoother framerate.

got it for my pc, barely played it though. Seems really cool. Apparently the PC version is the best. Game is really pretty and runs great. Got it maxed out on my system (core 2 duo @ 3ghz, 8800gt slightly Oc'ed, 4 gigs of ram and Windows 7 x64) with 2x AA.

Picked this up on Steam, Deluxe Edition. Took all of yesterday to download it, with some pausing as I did WoW dailies / heroics. Left it to Unlock overnight, as I was too tired to wait for it.

Now, I'm sitting at work until 6PM, have a class which will end at 8PM... and THEN... THEN I get to actually play it and enjoy myself!! :p

Can't wait.

The PC version is so much more superior to the 360/PS3 versions its almost a joke to get it on a console if you have a capable PC.

The only thing I don't like about the game is how they skimped on environment textures...I thought maybe it would just be the console versions, but when I got the PC version I was dismayed that they were pretty horrible there as well. Character textures are amazing as are some of the weapons, but walking through a forest where the floor textures are just splotches of green and brown really bothers me. I'm hoping some modder releases a texture pack just like we've seen in the past for games like Oblivion.

Also as another poster pointed out, large battles are dumbed down on the console version and for good reason, since they do not have an adequate pause functionality and lack an isometric view it would make such battles on the console nothing but frustrating. That is why during the internation DA:O competition the PC gamers had their difficulty set to "Easy" while the console gamers were set to "Normal" to keep things fair.

Is there any way to make your party follow you without having to click on the group party icon and right-clicking on the location?? That is REALLY annoying. I use WASD to move around and I keep forgetting your party will not auto follow you. There has to be a way to turn on this option. :ermm:

There are two ways.

1. There are two buttons right below your party portraits, the second one is what you're looking for, it says something like "Enable free walking" or "Hold your position" or something like that.

2. CTRL+A (like select all in Windows :)) selects ALL of your controllable characters and you move them together.

I was whining to my friend today about something..

DAO has crapload of voice-acting, except for the main character !

He did say that it would be pretty hard to create a voice-over for every sentence you make, without it sounding completely generic, but I say poo, it would've been 10 times more awesome to hear your character speak than looking at their faces turning to you and you stand there in silence, like you're brain damaged.

Some of the conversations I encountered were kind of stupid, some repeat, some break off conversation for no reason..

At least it's not like in Risen where you talk with someone and at the same time refer to them as if they're not even there..

Textures are definitely not up to today's standard.. kind of disappointing but the game itself is good, so I think we can let that slide.

My party auto-follows me around just fine, the only time they seemed to NOT follow me, was when there were enemies around and I was in stealth, which was actually quite nice because I could stealth behind the enemy, then send my party in to attack, then hit the enemy from behind. Other than that my party is always auto-following me. What difficulty are you in? I know under the party portraits on the left side there are two buttons, one is to select the entire party at once, you might need to use this to move your entire party depending on the difficulty you selected.

    • Nah. They'll milk the current generation in terms of design - controllers, consoles, but no meaningful hardware improvements. This is one reason why people aren't buying Xbox hardware - it's stagnant.
    • Funny, but I didn't had the issue. All PC's at work are Dell and we had the culprit version of Support Assist for about 2 weeks until we got the new one. No problem at all. And for checking you can also use Dell Command Update, no need to search in windows settings. Just check the Upgrade History.
    • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Apple are scared of their customers! They have built a brand over the years of "it just works out of the box", but that slows innovation. Samsung's master stroke was the Galaxy Ultra: "Let's cram everything into one handset, make it so stupid only real nerds will love it, some of the features will work, some won't, but the audience will have such a high tolerance they won't care". Apple has no such device and so they are constantly worrying these days about the fallout of creating a new experience that customers might not like. I know it is often cited the reason they don't build a touchscreen Mac Book is they don't want to cannibalise the the iPad market, but I think it's equally cold feet after the criticism Microsoft receive trying to make a touch compatible desktop OS
