Halo Reach Thread

So you think the destruction of the single, go-to weapon, removal of Dual Wielding, addition of an entirely new mechanics such as loadouts and armor abilities (even the mere addition of sprint) doesn't mix up the recipe? What about the revamped Covenant arsenal, enemies and the return of the homing rocket in at least single player? I'm not sure how long or deep you went into the game but there is plenty there that has changed.

None of that is core gameplay, none of that adds improved sound over the current crappy sounds on everything, wider FoV for a more enjoyable experience, make the weapons and overall movement feel a lot sharper.

That is all stuff for the Halo geeks to drool over, not for people looking to get into Halo - The story interests me and I want to play it but the core gameplay has some crucial issues that is stopping me, they don't need revamping they just need a tweak here and there for me to be able to enjoy the game. Oh and the loadout mechanics are a joke, especially adding confetti death animations and stuff like that.

Never been a halo player myself, still not impressed. Thought the warthog was just me, wtf is up with that?

Exactly, they killed that thing completely :|

Then the question is, is it the game or your preferences? Cause honestly if you have the same "problems" with the game you've had since the first then I would assume they aren't the game's problems but your dislike of these "problems". If the story interests you then play the game. You can't get mad a game for being itself, IMO. You can dislike it, but I wouldn't go so far as saying they are problems that need fixing. You seem to be most irritated with the stuff that has nothing to do with the core gameplay as well. I guess you just don't like how Halo presents itself. At least, that is my impression. Either way, I agree to disagree here.

Seems to me that you just don't like people asking for the fairly stale Halo gameplay recipe to change ( i.e. improve ) a bit, to broaden the appeal without compromising what makes Halo, Halo.

So yes, let's agree to disagree as we probably won't reach any sort of agreement with this game.

First off, I again am not really understanding why people refer to Halo is generic.

Generic might not be the right word. But the world is most definitely generic/sterile. They tried to inject a bit of life in to it this time but it still feels totally out of place. Bungie can't do indoor environments for ****- none of the areas I'm fighting in feel believable.

Same old. Same old.

I've only played for about an hour and that was on the custom game mode...detail is poor on the walls, but that doesn't really bother me. I just don't know why you can't play against CPU opponents in that game mode.

This if the first Halo game I've EVER played too...maybe I should catch up on the story from the other Halo's, even though this is set before all those! It doesn't seem as though it's going to be as 'kind', storywise, as I was hoping for.

I don't hate change, in fact I think the game has changed drastically. That's the difference between our opinions. You think the game's the same and I think it has change a lot since the initial title (although Reach has made an effort to move back towards said original title).

My mum just text me randomly saying "Halo Reach looks good", I would assume she has seen the advert, lol.

Think this will be on my Christmas list for now.

I would completely agree, I like Halo as a co-op game as it is always good fun, but never really enjoyed any of them besides Halo 1 when playing alone, though personally I thought ODST was more fun and varied and actually felt like it had a story in it to go along with and was a nice change.

I really like the universe and want to get the books, but to me it has never felt like I am playing a super soldier that the Spartans, and especially Master Chief, are suppose to be.

How in the hell are you guys playing this early? All "review copies"? shifty.gif

Yup. As you can see, my name is AWBrian (AW = ActiveWin.com). The staff and I get review copies of Microsoft Game Studios (and others) products early for review. I did our last Halo review (Halo 3):

So now it's another staff members turn go get early access :) I just happened to join him in some of the festivities w00t.gif

I've almost finished it twice already. Playing through on Heroic now. Goddamn it's way harder than previous Halo games.

That is what I have found too....and I already sucked at previous ones :(. But that is ok, I am learning :)

Cool, didn't know you were a Developer on ActiveWin!

SO tempted to play that clip but trying to avoid spoilers sad.gif

I played it, and there aren't that many spoilers. There aren't really any major ones. It just mentions a few of the things you get to do; it doesn't spoil the storyline for you.

The detail seems a bit basic to me, maybe it's because I've just been playing Uncharted 2 or something.

But really, the story is making no sense.

I know Reach is a planet but I don't know why they're all there, is it going to be explained later in the game or does it require knowledge from the previous games? I've got up to the bit where some guy has just seen his mum and the other guys don't seem to be very happy with her...

Oh God, that reviewer was absolutely painful to listen to.

It was like listening to a high school kid try and BS an essay with cliched metaphor after cliched metaphor at the beginning to give it some sort of illusion of intelligence, then he busts out into a basically fanboy review. My favorite gems:

"BEST HALO EVAH."

"This. Game. Is. Greatness."

Indeed. But it sounded like a young gamer who enjoys video games. Less "corporate" sounding, even though he sounded like a douche. I would suck at video reviews, but enjoy writing them.

    • This looks awesome, I will request access via Steam later this afternoon!
    • Personally, I’ve found that it’s usually worth investing in the infrastructure you don’t want to replace later, especially cabling. Running Cat6A (or better, depending on your needs) during an upgrade is relatively inexpensive compared to having to re-cable a few years down the road. For switches I try to balance current specs with realistic growth. If my budget allows it Ill choose switches with higher uplink speeds which leaves room for expanding later on, but I don’t necessarily overspend on access ports if the endpoints won’t benefit from them anytime soon. One lesson I’ve learned is that planning for scalability pays off. It’s much easier to add devices, VLANs, or higher-bandwidth workloads when your network infrastructure already supports it than to replace hardware later.  What is your budget like?
    • I hate the term, "future-proof." We saw it back in the 90's / 2000's, if not before. You cannot future-proof anything, since there is no definition of how far into the future you plan on prepping for. Best idea is to tell us what you currently have and what its use is at the moment, and we can then offer ideas about some areas that might need an upgrade and other areas that can be left alone.
    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
