Over 100 new features in Panther

That means it's a paid update.

Panther introduction. FreeBSD 5.0. New Finder?now user-centric with iTunes-like interface. Action button?like ctrl (right) clicking. Labels back. Fast search. Dynamic network browsing. Auto-sync files with .Mac.

Expose just confirmed as real, I can see real potential in expose.

Expose:

Easy window arranging method. Pressing a function key resizes all windows so they are all viewable. Clicking on a window brings it to the front. It can also resize windows in a single program or document. Also works with multiple-button mice and screen corners. Can also clear all windows to a corner.

* FileVault: secures a user's entire Home folder. [13:26 ET]

* Expose uses Quartz Extreme. [13:25 ET]

* Users can assign any key on their keyboard (or assign screen corners) to perform this feature. Lots and ooohs and aaaahs from the audience.[13:23 ET]

* Expose shrinks all of the windows in order to display them all on the screen at once, so you can find what you are looking for easily. [13:23 ET]

* Jobs says it makes it easier to find the window you are looking for. [13:22 ET]

* "Expose" is a new feature for organizing windows. [13:21 ET]

* Next up: "Expose" [13:20 ET]

* New .Mac to offer auto-syncing of files. [13:19 ET]

* The searches appear tremendously fast in the new Finder. Jobs says it is "The best the world has ever seen." [13:18 ET]

* There is a new iChat 2 icon with a camera in the middle that Jobs has not mentioned yet. [13:17 ET]

* Jobs demoes Panther. [13:17 ET]

* Panther features a one-column Finder, brushed metal Finder window, fast searching, an 'Action" button, the return of Labels, and New open and Save panels. [13:16 ET]

* Jobs says the old Finder was 'computer-centric' and Apple wants something 'user-centric' [13:15 ET]

* Panther to offer lots of UNIX features and Windows operability. [13:14 ET]

* Later today Apple will ship its one millionth iPod. [13:08 ET]

* Jobs showing a rendered pic of the upcoming San Francisco Apple store. [13:06 ET]

* 58 Apple retail stores: 17 million visitors so far. [13:06 ET]

* 300,000 Airport Extremes have shipped. [13:06 ET]

New version of Mail.app:

New version of Mail.app is improved with performance improvements everywhere. It includes Safari rendering, object-oriented addresses that can moved around, threaded view of mail ["impressive"] ., etc. Mail has a popup triangle for people with multiple addresses.

Less important to us I guess, but he just announced "Pixlet", it's a new codec for Quicktime, studio quality apparently, 48 bits / pixel source data, no noticeable visual artifacts, no inter-frame compression. He showed a Finding Nemo trailer in the format.

    • I wonder how many are laid off for cost savings, and this being blamed on AI to make it sound less scary and bad, for a more positive "modern, with the times" spin for investors? Because Oracle is down 14% the past year. We're also looking at a company struggling here.
    • AI is the beginning, wait until real robots replace more jobs, specifically jobs that require physical work.
    • AI is indeed eliminating jobs, and Oracle just proved it by Hamid Ganji There’s no question that AI has become the hottest trend in workplaces, and every company is trying to adopt AI-driven solutions across its operations. While some industry leaders repeatedly say AI won’t lead to massive layoffs, recent data suggest that AI is actually one of the main reasons some companies are reducing their workforce. According to Oracle’s annual regulatory filing, the company has laid off about 21,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce, amid increasing AI adoption. “The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce,” Oracle said in the filing. The software giant now has approximately 141,000 full-time employees, a notable decrease from 162,000 during the same period last year. Restructuring expenses, including severance payments, cost Oracle $1.84 billion in fiscal 2026. Additionally, around 49,000 Oracle employees were based in the U.S., while approximately 92,000 were employed internationally. Like many other companies, Oracle has fully embraced AI and concentrated much of its efforts on the technology. The company is also a key participant in the United States’ $500 billion Stargate Project, which aims to build multiple AI data centers across the country. When it comes to AI adoption and its impact on the workforce, opinions remain divided. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, whose company has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, recently said in an interview that attributing job cuts to AI is a “lazy” narrative. “The narrative that connects AI to job loss, for many of the CEOs that are doing it – it is just too lazy. AI has just arrived, how is it possible they're already losing jobs?” Huang said. However, statistics and recent reports tell a different story. According to Layoffs.fyi, 196 tech companies have laid off about 119,800 employees so far this year. Reducing staff and replacing roles with AI agents could become one of the most significant trends in the job market in the years ahead.
